Feb. 15 William Harvey Carney was born in 1840 in slavery. He escaped using the Underground Railroad and found his father living in . Eventually father and son purchased the rest of their family out of slavery. He was an African-American soldier during the . He was awarded the on May 23, 1900 posthumously for his actions during the Battle of . Sgt. Carney received his Medal of Honor for saving the American Flag and planting it on the parapet, despite being wounded several times in the process. Although his actions were very heroic, he did not receive his medal until 37 years later. This made him the last African-American to be awarded the Medal for Civil War Service.
