  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

  • Taking the Stage by Lauren Biron at MIDNIGHT, Armed with a Ruler And
Taking the Stage by Lauren Biron AT MIDNIGHT, armed with a ruler and a pencil, Bentley Chang kneels in his bedroom under a poster of John Lennon. Next to a large, black bass drum that dominates the floor, he lays out a thick sheet of drawing paper and begins to sketch the letter “zhe” of the Cyrillic alphabet; it looks like a K reflected along its vertical axis. In the muggy, musky room, his skin sticks to his wifebeater and basketball shorts as he outlines his design. Once finished, he cuts out the stencil with a razor and attaches the altered K to the drum with masking tape. He thought of using the letter “zhe” as a “K” when he was driving down the freeway. It came to him as randomly as the band name had come to their DJ, Kevin Agorrilla. The group had suggested names for weeks at a time: Circles with Dots, Smegmatron, Audial Entropy, Forte. Then one day at practice, Kevin suggested Kersey, named after the masculine Charles Bronson character from Death Wish 3. Only four of the six band members had seen the movie, but all agreed that Charles Bronson was so badass he could kill Chuck Norris in a fight, and that was good enough. The name provided no stigma, no definition of what they should sound like. The rhythm and funk and punk could take over. When Bentley accidentally misspelled the band name, Kearsey was born. Now, as the music of Circa Survive plays, Bentley mixes red and crimson acrylic paint and retrieves a flat brush.

Jan-Peter Herbst & Jonas Menze Gear Acquisition Syndrome, also known as GAS, is commonly Syndrome Gear Acquistion understood as the musicians’ unrelenting urge to buy and own Gear Acquistion Syndrome instruments and equipment as an anticipated catalyst of creative energy and bringer of happiness. For many musicians, it involves the unavoidable compulsion to spend money one does not have on Consumption of Instruments and gear perhaps not even needed. The urge is directed by the belief that Technology in Popular Music acquiring another instrument will make one a better player. This book pioneers research into the complex phenomenon named GAS from a variety of disciplines, including popular music studies and music technology, cultural and leisure studies, consumption research, sociology, psychology and psychiatry. The newly created theoretical framework and empirical studies of online communities and offline music stores allow the study to consider musical, social and personal motives, which influence the way musicians think about and deal with equipment. As is shown, GAS encompasses a variety of practices and psychological processes. In an often life-long endeavour, upgrading the rig is accompanied by musical learning processes in popular music. First, you may see FF a style or genre or a subject you IN have never really considered Tbefore, and think, ‘I want to do that!’ Second, you may see something you have already attempted and think ‘OK, I see why my pictures aren’t as good.’ Third comes negative inspiration, also known as realism, ‘Although I like this picture, I am unlikely ever to emulate it.’ This may include genres you have given up, or subjects you’d prefer to admire in either real life or pictures, rather than shoot. For me, this picture partakes of all three. Perhaps to the surprise of some readers, I was once young and have done a few more or less competent pictures of fairly similar subjects: principally, Bristol-based band Essential Bop and various poets, especially the poet, singer and songwriter Cath Milne. If I’d looked harder at pictures like this, I might have done them all more justice. It comes from ‘Unseen Icons by Phil Griffin: 25 Years in Film & Photography’: an exhibition running until 23 November at the Brownsword Hepworth Gallery in London. While I was waiting for a copy of the picture, I bought a book of Chinese- inspired ink-brush drawings of cats. Each was reduced to a few essential lines. Looking at the two together (and without the slightest disrespect to either), these are the messages I took away.
