In Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station (KLSS) is the largest transit terminal and as of 2017, the commuters at KLSS have reached 180,000. With this substantial number of commuters, walking might be difficult especially during peak hours. Hence, a better understanding of crowd dynamics is the key to plan and manage the pedestrians’ flow in RTT. One of important crowd attributes that crucial to be quantified specifically is walking speed. While walking speed has been studied in general, such analysis specific to RTT commuters is still lacking. In this contribution, the main objective is to evaluate the walking speed of the commuters in KLSS by considering different pedestrians walking categories, like normal walking, walking with luggage and walking while looking at the gadget in hand.

  • Craig Moore (August 2018) Kuala Lumpur the Historic Development Of
Craig Moore (August 2018) Kuala Lumpur The historic development of urban rail in Kuala Lumpur has been very fragmented, with the system being created, and expanded, through different ownership, construction, mode and operational styles. It was not until 2004, when Rapid KL took operational control of the LRT lines, that some semblance of integration became evident. In 2007 the Monorail was also brought under this brand and since then there has been an attempt to better assimilate urban rail provision in the capital area. Initially, this had mixed success but, more recently, there has been a strengthening of ambition and resources to make this work – and this has largely been successful. This trend, together with recent expansions of rail provision, means that metropolitan KL now has a significant rail ‘footprint’ with 10 lines and several different modes throughout the Federal District and surrounding parts of Selangor. Whilst Rapid KL services (MRT/LRT/Monorail) are undoubtedly the backbone of rail provision, this is supported by KTM suburban rail services and a private airport line to PutraJaya and KLIA. Rapid KL Services The first modern rail provision in KL was the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line (37km to Sri-Petaling and 8.1km branch to Ampang from Chan Sow Lin). It runs on standard-gauge track with third-rail power supply from the Sentul area in the north on an elevated structure along the Gombak River and through the original city centre. This part of the route is the most characterful and the rail elevation is a great way to see the city and its, somewhat, indiscriminate development.

  • Malaysia Singapore & Brunei
© Lonely Planet 90 Kuala Lumpur KUALA LUMPUR Kuala Lumpur’s metamorphosis from the jungle hovel of tin prospectors to a gleaming 21st- century city of high-rises and highways seems like a triumph of man over nature. However, peer down on KL (as it’s commonly known) from the bird’s-eye height of Menara KL and it’s clear that nature continues to fight back: this remains one of the greenest cities in Southeast Asia and is all the better for it. The blueprint was set early by the British who, in their colonial wisdom, crafted the Lake Gardens. This lush lung remains intact, as does the hillock of rainforest on which Menara KL rests and the old cricket field (now Merdeka Square) on which independence was declared back in 1957. The iconic Petronas Towers were developed alongside a beautifully landscaped park and to the north of the city more greenery surrounds Lake Titiwangsa. In its built environment, few cities can compare to KL for diversity and daring. Imagine Fritz Lang’s Metropolis crossed with an Arabian Nights Moorish fantasy and you begin to grasp a place where Chinese, Indian, Malay and contemporary structures coalesce into a fascinating whole. The cream of Malaysian creativity can be experienced here also in the traditional crafts and cutting-edge art, design and fashion that can be found in KL’s abundant malls and markets. Each ethnic community brings something to the table – most importantly in a delicious array of cuisines that make dining out the stellar experience in this star Southeast Asian urban performer.

HISTORY Built more than a century ago, Masjid Jamek is one of the country’s oldest mosques. It was officiated by the-then Sultan of Selangor in 1909 – two years after construction was completed – and served as the city’s main mosque before Masjid Negara was built in 1965. Located at the confluence of Klang River and Gombak River, the mosque stands on the city’s first Malay burial ground. with a capacity of up to 3000 occupants, It was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback and features Neo-Moorish architectural style reminiscent of colonial buildings in Northern India, distinguished by onion-shaped domes and spires, and horseshoe arches over decorated columns. Not far from Masjid Jamek across the Gombak River is the equally-historical Sultan Abdul Samad Building, which was designed by the same architect and shares a similar style.
