Taylor • The roles of race and ethnicity in gang membership are becoming increasingly complicated, and it is important to understand that the term gang membership is not “code” for race or ethnicity; the truth is that more and more gangs include white gang members and are becoming multiracial. • Different risk factors exist — and young people give different reasons — for gang-joining; how- ever, most risk factors cut across racial and ethnic lines, including the negative consequences associated with poverty, immigration, discrimination and social isolation, such as limited edu- cational opportunities, low parental monitoring and drug use. • To prevent gang-joining, resources should be used to revitalize deteriorating, poverty- stricken, racially/ethnically isolated communities. • We can act now on what we know about shared risk factors — such as poverty, immigration, discrimination and social isolation — to implement general prevention strategies and programs that are racially, ethnically and culturally sensitive while continuing to explore whether additional racially and ethnically specific gang-membership -

Ralph Ellison, Invisible Man 1. The Criminal Type A remarkable number of US literature’s most recognizable criminals reside in mid-twentieth-century fiction. Between 1934 and 1958, James M. Cain gave us Frank Chambers and Walter Huff; Patricia Highsmith gave us Charles Bruno and Tom Ripley; Richard Wright gave us Bigger Thomas and Cross Damon; Jim Thompson gave us Lou Ford and Doc McCoy; Dorothy B. Hughes gave us Dix Steele. Many other once-estimable authors of the middle decades of the century—like Horace McCoy, Vera Caspary, Charles Willeford, and Willard Motley—wrote novels centrally concerned with what it felt like to be a criminal. What, it is only natural to wonder, was this midcentury preoccupation with crime all about? Consider what midcentury crime fiction was not about: detec- tives. Although scholars of twentieth-century US literature often use the phrases crime fiction and detective fiction interchangeably, the detective and the criminal were, by midcentury, the anchoring pro- tagonists of two distinct genres. The theme for that year’s meeting was “In Defense of Western Man,” and the three hundred conference attendees—all apparently white men—were gathered in the name of “white genetic solidarity.”1 In past years, the conference had focused on non‑European immigrants and citizens of color in the United States. In 2002, its emphasis shifted to “the vicissitudes of white identity as it seemed to disappear before our eyes,” with the goal of bringing about “the racial awakening of an Anglocentric nation in crisis.”2 Hill, a white man who edited Whiteness: A Critical Reader in 1997, attended the meeting with permission; he was given an invitation when he truthfully lied that he wrote on whiteness.3 Unbeknownst to the American Renaissance organizers and attendees, Hill was at the conference as a spy on behalf of The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. His task was to write “a sort of antiracist exposé” for the journal, which he did for their Spring 2002 issue.4 The American Renaissance Web site labels its approach to race as one of “race real‑ ism,” and in noninflammatory ways explains that “race is an important aspect of individual and group identity. Race and racial conflict are at the heart of the most serious challenges the Western World faces in the 21st century. -

It does so by examining white attitudes towards Latinos in Orange County, California through public discourse analysis of the “Ask a Mexican” column, a survey instrument and a series of in-depth interviews to triangulate whites’ use and logic of racial stereotypes and policy preferences. Orange County is a good testing ground for contemporary Latino racialization because it is a majority minority area, which has a long history of migration from Mexico, with deep racial segregation that reflects racial inequalities between whites and Latinos. While Latinos in the United States as a whole are a heterogeneous group my data demonstrates how the current racialization of Latinos in the United States has a homogenizing effect. Empirically my data maps racial stereotypes whites have had and continue to reference as the Latino population has increased. -

Defning Whiteness: Perspectives on Privilege Anna Lindner Although white people have largely dictated the global narratives of history, philosophy, literature, and beyond, whiteness as a racial category remains vague. How, then, do we defne whiteness and how do those considered white relate to other racial groups? One path to understanding these questions is to provide an overview of whiteness, including its history, as well as Black authors’ interpretations of white identity and its impact on populations of color, critical whiteness studies, case studies, and contemporary scholarship in the feld. Te overview concludes by addressing white privilege and the ways in which whites can support people of color in the pursuit of racial justice. In terms of scholarship, the research presented here is focused primarily on the United States, drawing on research from other countries when applicable.
