Our Town: South Bend Premieres Monday, June 8 a Message from Greg Giczi Board of President and GM, WNIT Public Television Directors Pl a nnerMichiana’s bi-monthly Guide to WNIT Public Television Issue No. 3 May — June 2015 Our Town: South Bend Premieres Monday, June 8 A Message from Greg Giczi Board of President and GM, WNIT Public Television Directors Chairman Ida Reynolds Watson Vice Chair Rodney F. Ganey, Ph.D. Susan Ohmer, Ph.D. Dear WNIT Supporters: President and General Manager I wish our WNIT Planner magazine could be monthly, rather than bimonthly. I always have Greg Giczi so many interesting items to share with you and I hate to wait so long between editions to pass Treasurer them along. I am particularly proud of the special local programs coming up in May and June. Thomas E. Slager The next of our “Legends of Michiana” series of documentaries will have its broadcast Secretary premiere on Monday, May 25th at 8pm. We will honor Elkhart’s own Arthur J. Decio – father, Cari Shein grandfather, entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist, mentor, and Michiana’s mayor of Directors . Those of us who have previewed this program have all been inspired by it. I think David L. Bankoff, MD Sesame Street Thomas G. Coley, Ph.D. you will be too. Marvin Curtis Katy Demarais The City of South Bend has a big birthday this year. It celebrates its 150th year as a city, Robert G. Douglass “SB150”. WNIT will contribute to marking this event with three programs. The first two are Irene E. Eskridge coming up in May and June. Rebecca Espinoza-Kubacki William A. Gitlin On Friday night, May 22nd, we will have a special Experience Michiana with Gordy Young. Tracy D. Graham Albert L. Gutierrez This will be a live broadcast at 9pm covering the festivities and inauguration of the “South Bend James Hillman River Lights,” a stretch of the St. Joseph River and cascades which will now have permanent, Mary Horan dramatic lighting effects. Katherine Humphreys Ryan Matthys On Monday, June 8th at 8pm we will premiere Our Town: South Bend, and experience the Christine M. Maziar work of citizen videographers as they tell the story of their city through their own lens. The Brian McMahon Mary Louise Miller Our Town series of programs are always special because of the unique storytelling. A third Pat Moody documentary related to SB150 will premiere in September. If you had to pick a person or group Kevin Morrison who were the most instrumental in building and sustaining South Bend’s economy, who would Steven J. Perlewitz it be? Look for our choice in September. Maritza Robles Jill Sigsbee WNIT, Michiana PBS, relies on three main sources of funding – individuals (viewers like Joyce F. Stifel James M. Summers you), corporations, and grants from federal and state government. At this moment, our federal Michael Wargo support is in jeopardy. The House of Representatives has passed its budget, stripping all Patrick Welch funding for public media. If this is an issue for which you would like to express an opinion, we Charter Directors encourage you to contact your congressperson. Arthur J. Decio Jerry Hammes Residents of St. Joseph County, IN, have a special opportunity to double their gifts to WNIT. Ernestine M. Raclin The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County is sponsoring “Give Local Day” on May 5th. Jane Warner* Dar Wiekamp* For every dollar you donate to WNIT on May 5th only, the CFSJC will match it, dollar for dollar. This is a great opportunity for all participating non-profits in St. Joseph County. Give Honorary Life Director Carmi Murphy WNIT an extra boost on Give Local Day! *Deceased Charter Director Thanks for viewing, and thanks for giving. With some, bat an eye and you’ve gone past them. Others are models of what the quintessential hometowns ought to look like. We celebrate their uniqueness and honor the traditions that have helped mold America and Indiana to this very day. The Our Town series is all about these towns and the people within them who help tell the stories of what makes their special corner of the world unique. In the case of Our Town: South Bend, there is everything from historical sites to traditional high school hang-outs, the churches, the downtown, the restaurants, the great traditions, as well as the new technology moving in. Plus so many other special places that are known to those who live in South Bend and know the true spirit of what South Bend is all about. WNIT is proud to present its new documentary Our Town: South Bend on Monday, June 8 at 8pm with a repeat airing immediately following at 9:30pm, June 11 at 9pm and June 17 at 9:30pm on channel 34.1.
