2 2021 WNIT Day of Giving

Thank You for making the 2021 WNIT Day of Giving a Huge Success

At WNIT, we are continuously awed and inspired by the generosity of you, our donors. With $28,500 in matching funds, we unlocked the full match for the 2021 Day of Giving. Leading up to and on May 27, we received a total, including the matching funds, of $71,183 from 118 donors. Thank you to all who participated in making this our largest annual individual giving event!

2021 marked the fourth annual WNIT Day of Giving, a concept adopted from the successful model used by the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County for their Give Local SJC Days in 2015 and 2017 in support of area non-profit organizations. With a leadership gift from the Estate of Jack and Shirley Appleton and additional funds from Bill and Lorrie Schmuhl, Thomas and Anita Veldman and other friends of WNIT, we were able to increase our matching funds over last year’s level. This generosity resulted in another successful day of fundraising on May 27.

WNIT prides itself on the positive we have on our community. From quality local productions, to the best of PBS programming, to the curriculum-based PBS Kids shows and online learning materials, we offer only the highest quality programming. In the past year, we have expanded that service to include a temporary (now permanent – see more on page 10) Learning Channel with supporting curriculum for at-home learning. It is only through the generous support of each of you that we are able to accomplish all of this.

Thank you for the resources that you provide to PBS Michiana - WNIT to make this a better Michiana!

10 Then, Now and Always…The St. Joseph River Story Highlights Celebrate the St. Joe Summer Activities

Throughout its history, the St. Joseph River has always attracted and sustained life. From furs and food to transportation, power, and recreation, the river serves a central role in the lives of those who call its banks home. To this day, its waters provide for native people. In the past, those waters attracted global powers to the region and later, powered the industries that built the cities of . However, rapid industrialization and population growth took a toll on the river during the 19th and 20th centuries, altering its flow and polluting its waters. Today, however, the river is undergoing an astonishing transformation. Its waters are cleaner, and it serves as a point of pride for its communities, inspiring new development and recreational opportunities. WNIT tells the story of the St. Joseph River, including the people, history, and life along this storied river from Hillsdale to Lake Michigan. We celebrate how it has shaped the region and continues to be an integral part of our community. We hope this documentary will accelerate the renewed appreciation for the St. Joseph River and inspire people to preserve and cherish the river for future generations.

Then, Now and Always…The St. Joseph River Story, a WNIT documentary, will be previewed at “Celebrate the St. Joe” themed community events up and down the river on Saturday, August 28. For a complete listing of events and celebrations, go to www.wnit.org/celebratethestjoe.

“South Bend Parks: Reconnecting a Community!”

Parks and community spaces are an important part of the health and well- being of the places we live. Recently, South Bend Venues Parks and Arts started an initiative to reinvest in those areas in ways that better served the needs of those that lived around them.

South Bend Parks: Reconnecting a Community showcases some of the changes that have taken place and how its success was only possible through the involvement of many in the community. People having a voice in what their park should be, and how it should look, is key to bringing the Season 4 of “Masterpiece: Unforgotten” community together and more people out to the local parks. Returns in July! Tune in to South Bend Parks: Reconnecting a Community, The most dramatic season yet begs the question: who exactly is Thursday, July 1 at 7pm on PBS Michiana – WNIT! fighting for justice? Season 4 premieres on Sunday, July 11 at 9/8c on PBS Michiana - WNIT.

Nicola Walker (Last Tango in Halifax, Babylon) and Sanjeev Bhaskar (Yesterday) star as DCI Cassie Stuart and Cassie’s partner-in-solving- crime, DI Sunny Khan, who are veterans at uncovering the truth of tangled, complicated murders of the past. But the deeper the truth lies, the bigger the emotional toll for the suspects, the families left behind, and for Cassie and Sunny to handle. How long can one fight for justice while preserving their own sanity?

In Unforgotten Season 4, the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) award-winning series’ most dramatic season yet, Cassie and Sunny investigate a cold case with alarming links to the police force when a corpse is discovered in a scrap yard, his features frozen in time. All four suspects have links to the law and attended the same police training course back in 1989. But who exactly is fighting for justice? Can the police force ever really be trusted? And will Cassie and Sunny find themselves on the wrong side of the law? Guest stars in Season 4 include Alastair Mackenzie (Wolf Hall), Liz White (Life on Mars), Daniel Flynn (Father Brown), and more.

30 Directors’Circle The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
