Press Release From 6:PM to 11:PM Presale Tickets £15 On Resident Advisor & Crownmakers St John at Hackney Lower Clapton Rd, London E5 0PD Photo:Fergus McDonald Influence is an artistic and cultural project led by passionate activists looking to pro- mote electronic music in Europe. Its members aim to protect underground culture by gathering an eclectic mixture of local and international talents who share this ethos. It is by producing events of diverse formats, ranging from Sunday afternoons to regu- lar evenings, that Influence hopes to gather a diversified crowd made up of informed and open-minded people. For its first edition in London, Influence presents a pioneer of electronic music in the UK: Gerald is both one of the initiators of acid house music as well as one of the most respected artists worldwide in a genre that is exclusive to him. Influence also brings Frenchman and London based producer Danton Eeprom for this first Influence in London whose musical heritage reaches an aesthetic vision of electronic music. It’s only in a symbolic place for spiritual groove that such performance could be held, and in this outlook the church of St John of Hackney was the perfect venue to host the event. Seeking its spiritual groove, between occult vibrations & rumbling noise, Influence finds refuge in the church of St John Hackney (where beats meet angels). (Where beats meet angels) A Guy Called Gerald Manchester born and Berlin based electronic musician, Gerald Simpson’s life can be understood through his early influences. His Jamaican heritage gave him a passion for the battles parties in Man- chester while his adopted home of Berlin was industrial and raw. This led to his love for the machines which allowed him to master his craft. Founding member of 808 State, Gerald made his name in 1988 with Voodoo Ray. His first solo LP celebrates the dawn of a rave new world that reached England and the world alongside electronic music. In this genre, Gerald is a classicist. If you ask him ‘did you create the jungle style?’ he would res- pond that he is a hybrid mix of reggae, funk and techno. Though he is acclaimed for the birth of acid house, he would tell you it wouldn’t exist without the guys from Detroit. He even remains humble with the choice of his stage name. Some say his name came from the first radio show broadcasting of Voodoo Ray. As the radio host could not recall the name of the artist he finally announced: "Voodoo Ray by A Guy Called Gerald”. If Gerald did not create European techno, he is surely one of the initiators. If he doesn’t want to de defined by a specific musical category it’s purely because Gerald is well aware that his music has no equal-It’s just ‘A Guy Called Gerald’. http://www.guycalledgerald.com/ https://soundcloud.com/aguycalledgerald http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/aguycalledgerald https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Guy-Called-Gerald/51605353712 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsHTKdrvAGs Danton Eeprom French born and a London based producer, Danton’s deep roots in modern electronic music surely recall the name of Oscar Wilde in literature. Danton’s perfectionism and aesthetic vision has built his unique energy with influences ranging from pop music to rock and new wave. His two albums Yes Is More in 2009 & If Looks Could Kill both released on Infiné along with about fifteen EPs gained him much merited notoriety. We say he’s a techno dandy never far away from blasphemes. http://dantoneeprom.com/ https://soundcloud.com/danton-eeprom http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/dantoneeprom https://www.facebook.com/dantonrocks?fref=ts Infos Contacts Lower Clapton Rd London E5 0PD. • Native Instruments Releases the Second Installment in the EVERYBODY DJ Video Series
Native Instruments releases the second installment in the EVERYBODY DJ video series Dance music pioneer A Guy Called Gerald discusses the cultural link between new technology and the evolution of electronic music Berlin, September 18, 2014 – Native Instruments today continues the EVERYBODY DJ video series with the second installment featuring electronic music legend A Guy Called Gerald. The video features Gerald describing how innovative technology plays an important role in defining DJ culture and how mobile apps like TRAKTOR DJ for iPad and iPhone are creating new performance possibilities and diversifying relationships to digital music. An icon in his own league, A Guy Called Gerald has been an instrumental figure in the development of techno, acid house, jungle, and drum and bass in the UK since the late 1980s. The video captures Gerald’s view on the close relationship between technology and electronic music – reflecting on previous audio limitations with vinyl, and how digital technology has changed how he listens to, DJs, and creates music. Filmed in London at the premier of RELEASE, a documentary on House Shuffling in Britain, the video shows Gerald as he explains why the physical manipulation of waveforms on apps like TRAKTOR DJ for iPad and iPhone has given rise to completely new ways of DJing. Gerald can be seen mixing, beat jumping, and loop slicing live with TRAKTOR DJ for iPad – a tool that has had a particular impact on his DJing. Still underway, the first video in the EVERYBODY DJ series introduced the MIX. WIN. BERLIN! competition where Native Instruments asks “What would you play?” Anyone can enter to win a VIP weekend in Berlin by recording and uploading a mix to Mixcloud using TRAKTOR DJ, and tagging it with the #whatwouldyouplay hashtag.

The implantation had taken place during a video screening of the The Last Angel of History, produced by British artists, the Black Audio Film Collective. The video charted the coevo- lution of Afrofuturism: the interface between the literature of black science fi c- tion, from Samuel Delaney, Octavia Butler, and Ishmael Reed to Greg Tate and the history of Afro- diasporic electronic music, running from Sun Ra in jazz, Lee “Scratch” Perry in dub, and George Clinton in funk, right through to pioneers of Detroit techno (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Carl Craig) and, from the U.K., jungle and drum’n’bass (A Guy Called Gerald, Goldie).

  • Last Angel of History Research, Writing, Performance
Edward George 69 Hornchurch Gloucester Rd London N17 6LR UK [email protected] 0739 803 4344 Last Angel of History Research, Writing, Performance Edward George Introduction Last Angel of History, hereafter Last Angel, was a television documentary commissioned in 1993 by Channel Four and ZDF and produced by Black Audio Film Collective. The film, directed by John Akomfrah and produced by Black Audio Film Collective, was broadcast in October 1995 and comprises interviews with musicians Derrick May, Goldie, A Guy Called Gerald, Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, DJ Spooky and George Clinton, cultural theorists Greg Tate, Kodwo Eshun, and John Corbett, writers Samuel R Delany, Octavia Butler and Ishmael Reed, astronaut Bernard Harris and actor Nichelle Nichols; and archival film made up of cinematic, newsreel, photographic and phonographic archival material, and a location-based science fictional narrative. I was the film’s writer, researcher and presenter. I also performed the role of the titular protagonist, its ‘last angel of history’. The intent of the film was to affirm and cohere the ideas, practices, practitioners, technologies, artefacts and historical resonances of black cultural and political esoterica, which constitute the marginalia of black cultural expression, while also being a disquisition on futurity, loss and the aftermath of the Ghana revolution. Central to the film is a science fictional narrative of a time- travelling artefact collector from the year 2195, the data thief, whom I describe as a science fictional correlate of Robert Johnson (a ‘bad boy scavenger poet-figure’).1 Johnson, a 1930s blues musician, is cited in popular music historiography as the protagonist of a supernatural narrative on the gaining of musical knowledge:2 the data thief has come to the past, the twentieth century, to gain knowledge of the future, the twenty-second century.

During the 1980s three revolutions took hold of popular music: the emergence of disc-jockeys as a creative force (in particular in techno music), the advent of hip-hop (and therefore of the "rapper"), and the marriage of industrial music, heavy metal and hardcore (generically associated with the "cyber-punk" culture). Rap-music 1979-87 TM, ®, Copyright © 2005 Piero Scaruffi All rights reserved. The idea of rapping was imported into New York by the Jamaican immigrants, who were already familiar with "toasting" (a reggae artist talking in rhyme over the instrumental sections of a record). Some of them became disc-jockeys ("dj") that traveled around New York carrying their "sound system" to perform at block parties. In 1975 in the Bronx of New York, one of them, Clive "Hercules" Campbell, or "Kool Herc", started making music with two turntables out of breakbeats (the instrumental breaks of a song that focused on the rhythm section, the favorite part of the song for most dancers), while another young black man of the Bronx, Theodore "Grand Wizard" Livingstone was accidentally discovering the "skratching" sound of a turntable.

The Last Angel of History page 1 Theater Two The Last Angel of History 1995 Single-channel color video, sound, 45 minutes John Akomfrah British, born 1957 Loan courtesy of Smoking Dogs Films and Lisson Gallery, London The Last Angel of History follows the quest of a man known as the Data Thief, who seeks the keys to the future. He turns to his computer as a new source of access to knowledge in the 1990s. On the screen, he finds interviews with and performance clips by many innovators, including musicians Sun Ra, George Clinton, and Derrick May; critic Kodwo Eshun; and writers Octavia Butler, Samuel R. Delany, Ishmael Reed, and Greg Tate. All offer insights into the ways they have found to overcome the stigmas of cultural displacement—initiated originally by slavery—and the underestimation of their capabilities. This gathering of talent and imagination is considered a defining exploration of Afrofuturism. 00:02 page 2 Transcript for The Last Angel of History [music] 00:07 Narrator: We came across a story of a bluesman from the 1930s, a guy called Robert Johnson. Now the story goes, that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in the Deep South. He sold his soul, and in return, he was given the secret of a Black technology, a Black secret technology, that we know now to be the blues. The blues begat jazz, the blues begat soul, the blues begat hip-hop, the blues begat R&B. Now, flash forward 200 years into the future. Next figure, another hoodlum, another bad boy, scavenger, poet figure—he’s called a Data Thief.

Words Don’t Come Easy: New Album Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world After a summer filled with festivals, the act of listening to music in the sanctuary of your own home can appear a little strange. For a while every summer I briefly conclude that the best way to appreciate the bands or DJs that you love is while standing in a mud strewn field with ten thousand other people while the rain lashes down on your head. By JOHN BITTLES Maybe it’s just me, but there does seem to be a certain romanticism in singing along to your favourite tunes after not having slept for two days and rocking a look lovingly referred to as ‚resembling a drowned rat‘. Whether you have indulged in festival season this year or not, the following albums are pretty much guaranteed to instil feelings of wonder in even the most jaded of souls. We have the psychedelic hip hop of Shabazz Palaces, the synth heavy techno of Blondes, the wilful eclecticism of BadBadNotGood, the leftfield guitar jangle of James, and loads more. So, pitch up your tent, get a bottle of warm cider in you, and let us begin… Never ones for taking the easy route, Seattle hip hop duo Shabazz Palaces made a welcome return this summer with a sprawling concept album spread over two LPs. Out now on Sub Pop, Quazarz vs The Jealous Machines, and Quazarz: Born On A Gangster Star find the cosmic funk explorers Ishmael Butler and Tendai Maraire on sparkling form.

Further, it will reach out to those writers determined to capture the electronic essence of this at times alien electronic dance music culture within the rather more earth-bound parameters of the written word. How might such authors write about something so otherworldly as the nightclub scene? How might they write lucidly and fluidly about the rigid, metronomic beat of electronic music? What literary techniques might they deploy to accurately recount in fixed symbols the drifting, hallucinatory effects of a drug experience? In an attempt to address these questions this paper will offer an outerspace overview of this subculture and its fictional literary output.
