Abstract: This work is a catalogue of the musical production by the Japanese artist Ryuichi Sakamoto, based on the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) cataloguing rules. For this, I heard all of his music available on the internet. 62 albums and 693 tracks were classified in three different categories that divide the discography and musical production of Sakamoto. In addition, I investigated the extra-musical activities of the composer, as his participation in quite diverse projects like the visual arts or activism for environmental causes. The text is organized in two chapters. First one, containing biographical information about the artist, explains why make a catalogue of Ryuichi Sakamoto and shows other projects in which the artist has worked. The second chapter first describes the process of making the catalogue, then the Ryuichi Sakamoto catalogue is shown, finally observations and results extracted from the catalogue are discussed. The main objective of this work is to present the musical work of Ryuichi Sakamoto to who are interested and leave a support of his artistic production within the academic context of Colombia. Ella me introdujo a Ryuichi Sakamoto.

I consider the extent to which performances enact alternative readings of Finnegans Wake, challenging notions of competence and understanding; and by viewing performance as a form of writing I ask whether Joyce’s composition process can be remembered by its recomposition into new performances. These perspectives raise questions about authority and archivisation, and I argue that performances of Finnegans Wake challenge hierarchical and institutional forms of interpretation. By appropriating Joyce’s text through different methodologies of reading and writing I argue that these performances come into contact with a community of ghosts and traces which haunt its composition. In chapter one I argue that performance played an important role in the composition and early critical reception of Finnegans Wake and conduct an overview of various performances which challenge the notion of a ‘Joycean competence’ or encounter the text through radical recompositions of its material.

It has half-abolished one of the worst consequences of the diver- sity of languages. Literature enables nations to understand one another. Ora) intercourse hardly does this. In English, a distinguished foreigner says not what he thinks, but what he can. There is a certain intimate essence of national mean- ing which is as untranslatable as good poetry. Dry thoughts are cosmopolitan; but the delicate associations of language which express character, the traits of speech which mark the man, differ in every tongue, so that there are not even cum- brous circumlocutions that are equivalent in another.

Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

Abstract Uganda, like many other countries in the Global South, is in dire need of affordable housing. According to the 2017 Uganda National Household Survey, the number of poor Ugandans increased from 6.6 million in 2012/13 to 10 million in 2017 (Twinoburyo 2018). Uganda’s population growth is also the fourth highest in the world (The World Bank Group 2018). With the cost of manufacturing and purchasing construction materials like cement increasing due to scarcity of raw materials (Kamukama 2018), many Ugandans are unable to afford to construct homes.

  • Lycra, Legs, and Legitimacy: Performances of Feminine Power in Twentieth Century American Popular Culture
LYCRA, LEGS, AND LEGITIMACY: PERFORMANCES OF FEMININE POWER IN TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE Quincy Thomas A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Francisco Cabanillas, Graduate Faculty Representative Bradford Clark Lesa Lockford © 2018 Quincy Thomas All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jonathan Chambers, Advisor As a child, when I consumed fictional narratives that centered on strong female characters, all I noticed was the enviable power that they exhibited. From my point of view, every performance by a powerful character like Wonder Woman, Daisy Duke, or Princess Leia, served to highlight her drive, ability, and intellect in a wholly uncomplicated way. What I did not notice then was the often-problematic performances of female power that accompanied those narratives. As a performance studies and theatre scholar, with a decades’ old love of all things popular culture, I began to ponder the troubling question: Why are there so many popular narratives focused on female characters who are, on a surface level, portrayed as bastions of strength, that fall woefully short of being true representations of empowerment when subjected to close analysis? In an endeavor to answer this question, in this dissertation I examine what I contend are some of the paradoxical performances of female heroism, womanhood, and feminine aggression from the 1960s to the 1990s. To facilitate this investigation, I engage in close readings of several key aesthetic and cultural texts from these decades. While the Wonder Woman comic book universe serves as the centerpiece of this study, I also consider troublesome performances and representations of female power in the television shows Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the film Grease, the stage musical Les Misérables, and the video game Tomb Raider.
