  • Muthill in Bloom 2019
Prepared by Muthill In Bloom for Beautiful Scotland 2019 Designed by Muthill Primary School, Muthill Muthill In Bloom 2019 Prepared by Muthill In Bloom for Beautiful Scotland 2019 Introduction To Muthill In Bloom Muthill in Bloom was formed in 1993 by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers with Lily Crawford and Margaret Melville at its helm, and now, more than a quarter of a century later, their vision continues to thrive. The aim of the group to “improve the appearance of the village” has helped create an environmentally friendly place to stay and visit… a desirable place to live and work. The group has progressed from back garden displays to the creation of eye catching floral displays, never afraid to try something different or use a “crazy” colour scheme. Throughout the summer months village displays are a lot of colour all maintained and watered by a very dedicated team, ensuring everything is in tip top condition . Support for this work is essential and fortunately we work with 27 other partners in and around the village allowing us to do what we do. Fundraising events throughout the year include coffee mornings, bingo tea, plant sales and Christmas post delivery service. Teaching a younger generation has now become a priority and helping our local primary school is very important. Last year we planted a “young ones” orchard with the help of every child in the village school and nursery and we look forward to watching this project progress and grow. This year we hope to support the school in their bid to win a 6th green eco flag.

You will notice the difference in style and content, which is down to our new associate edi- tors, David Wilson and Morag Sweet. I’m sure you will agree that their hard work and en- thusiasm has handsomely paid off. At this year’s AGM, members were treated to the Abernyte Heritage Group’s oral history presentation (reported inside). Thanks were expressed for the Friends’ volunteers’ hard work and that of the committee. Our particular thanks go to Christine Wood who is retiring as treasurer and who has done an excellent job during her term of office. We welcome Mr Pe- ter Stroyan who was appointed treasurer at the AGM and are pleased that Mr John Howat has been re-appointed as secretary. Greener Living Coupar Angus Final Report Section 1. 1.1 Project name: Greener Living Coupar Angus 1.2 CCF Number: CCF - 3239 1.3 Organisation: Forward Coupar Angus, 41, Precinct Street, Coupar Angus. PH13 9DG. 1.4 Main project contacts: John Palfreyman [email protected] Wendy McCombes [email protected] Section 2. Headline Achievements. 2.0 Greener Living Coupar Angus received tremendous support from the town with over 700 local people taking part in the events and activities run by the project. The project was supported by 85 people who volunteered and took an active role in “making things happen”. This led to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 29.4 tonnes over the 21 months of the project. There is considerable legacy of the project in the areas of growing, cooking and cycling and this will be evident in the town for many years to come. Two hugely committed, talented and imaginative young people, Rachel Butterworth and Grant Murdoch (who held the posts of Food Development Officer and Cycle Development Officer respec- tively) delivered the project with the Board of Forward Coupar Angus providing encouragement, expertise and back up support. Both Rachel and Grant who were with the project from start to fin- ish, gained additional qualifications, Velotech Gold, Cycle Leader trainer and Nourish Food Leader and submitted four successful funding applications in their time with the project. Whilst the CO2 reduction may have been less than predicted there is no doubt that GLCA has built an infrastructure, in terms of a volunteer, facility and skills base, that will allow further and sus- tained CO2 reduction in the future.

  • Muthill Saints: a Parish of Confusion
Muthill Saints: a parish of confusion Norval Smith University of Amsterdam 1 General introduction The purpose of this article is to end some of the confusion regarding the dedications of the various churches and chapels of the historical parish of Muthill in Upper Strathearn in Perthshire, and most importantly make a proposal about which saint the parish church is dedicated to.1 I hope in this way to clarify the situation and make it possible to provide a more informed basis from which further conclusions can be drawn. The Appendix gives a fuller listing of references to St Cattan’s Fair in Muthill. 1.1 General historical context The historical context in which these Muthill dedications should be seen has been most succinctly put by Thomas Owen Clancy, with some fine-tuning by Gilbert Márkus. Clancy (2004, 140) has suggested that secular relationships might have existed between the lords of ‘the area around Culross and Strathearn in Perthshire’ and ‘the holders of Pictish kingship’ towards the end of the seventh century and the beginning of the eighth century. Clancy’s thesis is that various leaders of the Dalriadan Cenél Comgaill, including Dargart, who was the father of two successive kings of the Picts, Bruide/Bridei (c. 697–706) and Nec(h)tan (706–729),2 had moved eastwards from their home in the Cowal area bordering the Firth of Clyde in the West of Scotland to Strathearn in the East of the country. Clancy (138) suspects that Bruide’s father Dargart’s family had had interests in the area of Culross at least.
