Também investigamos como características morfológicas (ornamentos) e traços de personalidade (neofobia) afetam o desempenho individual na tarefa espacial. Além disso, testamos como a escolha feminina atua na seleção de machos com melhor desempenho em tarefas de aprendizagem espacial. There is no try.” Yoda vii Resumo Os processos individuais de adquirir, armazenar e usar informações para resolver tarefas cognitivas podem variar entre os indivíduos de uma mesma espécie. Isso ocorre, por exemplo, quando existem variações comportamentais consistentes, decorrentes de dimorfismo sexual ou por variações morfológicas dentro de um único sexo. Isso pode gerar diferentes suscetibilidades à predação em indivíduos mais ornamentados, ou preferência por indivíduos com melhores habilidades cognitivas, o que contribui para a evolução da cognição. Nesse contexto, quando pressões seletivas atuam de maneira distinta entre os indivíduos, é esperado o surgimento de variações na tomada de decisões ecologicamente relevantes. Adicionalmente, é sugerida uma ligação funcional entre a variação individual cognitiva e a personalidade animal, gerando demandas conflitantes entre precisão e velocidade de decisão. Neste estudo, investigamos a neofobia, o aprendizado espacial e a escolha feminina no peixe amazônico Crenuchus spilurus, uma espécie sexualmente dimórfica. Não encontramos diferença sexual na taxa de aprendizagem da tarefa espacial. Contudo, quando avaliadas as diferenças intrassexuais, machos mais ornamentados mostraram melhor desempenho na tarefa, apresentando maior precisão para resolver o labirinto no último dia de testes do que machos menos ornamentados e fêmeas em geral. Machos mais ornamentados são mais neofóbicos e levaram mais tempo para resolver a tarefa espacial na primeira tentativa. Isso sugere que esses machos se comportam de acordo com o princípio de proteção de ativos, quando machos mais atraentes devem ser mais cautelosos como resultado de maiores retornos futuros decorrentes de suas características físicas. Além disso, fêmeas mostraram preferência por machos mais ornamentados, que foram os indivíduos que apresentaram melhor desempenho na tarefa espacial. Com estes resultados, propomos que a diferença sexual na cognição pode emergir da variação intrassexual, causada pela pressão seletiva que ocorre sobre machos mais ornamentados. Adicionalmente, como o princípio de proteção de ativos decorre da pressão de predação, a seleção sexual por meio da escolha feminina proporciona uma troca de recompensas e riscos, sobre a qual a seleção natural atua indiretamente aumentando habilidades de aprendizado. viii Abstract The individual processes of acquisition, retention and use of information to solve cognitive tasks can vary between individuals. Such cognitive variation may be explained by consistent behavioral differences, resulting from sexual dimorphism or morphological variations within a single sex. This can generate different susceptibilities to predation in individuals with higher degree of ornamentation, and/or mating preference for individuals with enhanced cognitive skills, which contributes to the evolution of cognition. In that context, when selective pressures act differently among individuals, variations in ecologically relevant decision-making are expected. Additionally, a functional link between individual cognitive variation and animal personality is suggested, generating speed-accuracy trade-offs. In a further step, we investigated the relationship between spatial learning to male ornamental degree and neophobia and finally female mate choice, in the Amazonian fish Crenuchus spilurus, a sexually dimorphic species. We found no sex differences in the learning rate of the spatial task. However, when assessing males’s individual differences, those with higher degree of ornamentation showed better performance in the learning task, displaying greater precision to solve the maze on the last day of test. The performance of these males was better than males with lower degree of ornamentation and females. Males with a higher degree of ornamentation were more neophobic and took longer to resolve the spatial task on the first attempt. This suggests that males with a higher degree of ornamentation behave according to the asset-protection principle, which proposes that more attractive males should be more cautious as a result of higher future returns consequences of their physical characteristics. In addition, females showed preference for males with higher degree of ornamentation, which consequently, were also the individuals who showed better performance in learning the spatial task. We propose that the sex differences in cognition can emerge from the intrassexual variation, caused by the selective pressure that occurs in males with higher degree of ornamentation. The composition, phylogeny, and classification of Characidae is currently uncertain, despite significant efforts based on analysis of morphological and molecular data. No consensus about the monophyly of this group or its position within the order Characiformes has been reached, challenged by the fact that many key studies to date have non-overlapping taxonomic representation and focus only on subsets of this diversity. Results: In the present study we propose a new definition of the family Characidae and a hypothesis of relationships for the Characiformes based on phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes (4,680 base pairs). The sequences were obtained from 211 samples representing 166 genera distributed among all 18 recognized families in the order Characiformes, all 14 recognized subfamilies in the Characidae, plus 56 of the genera so far considered incertae sedis in the Characidae. The phylogeny obtained is robust, with most lineages significantly supported by posterior probabilities in Bayesian analysis, and high bootstrap values from maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses.

The results reveal a rich and diversified ichthyofauna, with 1,165 species distributed in 17 orders (+ two incertae sedis), 56 families, and 389 genera. A large portion of the fish fauna (54.3% of the species) is composed of small-sized fishes < 10 cm in standard length.

In considering some of the environmental consequences of such an undertaking, it quickly became apparent that one of the primary regional concerns of such a move was the potential for unintentional movement of invasive species to new locations in the region. Guam has already suffered the eradication of many of its native species due to the introduction of brown treesnakes and many other invasive plants, animals and pathogens cause tremendous damage to its economy and marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. DoN, in consultation and concurrence with relevant federal and territorial regulatory entities, determined that there was a need to develop a biosecurity plan to address these concerns.

    The Fishery, Diversity, and Conservation of Ornamental Fishes in the Rio Negro Basin, Brazil - A review of Project Piaba (1989-99). ABSTRACT The goal of Project Piaba is to investigate the diversity of fishes in the middle Rio Negro basin, providing a scientific basis for an ornamental fishery at commercially and ecologically sustainable levels. The project has focused on the diversity and ecology of fishes, and on the socio-economic implications of the fishery, generating information for resource management, biological conservation, and business opportunities for the ornamental fish industry. Major findings include: (1) the cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is the indicator species for the ornamental fishery, and changes in its numbers can significantly alter the socio-economic situation of riverine communities in the region, (2) species richness of the floodplain fishes is much greater than previously recorded (more than 400 species have been identified for the middle Rio Negro Basin), and the importance of the river channel as a barrier and refuge for floodplain fishes is evident, (3) climatic events such as El Niño can significantly alter fish diversity and affect the ornamental fishery of the floodplain (low water during the Pleistocene glacial period might be an important mechanism of speciation in the Neotropical region), (4) problems of fish health and live fish transport have been identified, but the issues cannot be solved by technology alone, (5) training local people and involving the ornamental fish industry, hobbyists, and regulatory agencies in the conservation of ornamental fishes has proceeded rapidly.

Sidlauskas Characiform fishes form one of the most diverse freshwater fish clades in the world. Comprising more than 2000 species and distributed primarily in South America and Africa, characiforms vary dramatically in their ecomorphology. However, the evolutionary processes responsible for the immense ecomorphological diversity remains unknown. Recently, a study postulated that the unparalleled ecomorphological diversification arose through an ancient adaptive radiation, as evidenced by the clear segregation of morphological traits, such as body shape, among different trophic and habitat groups. However, no formal macroevolutionary analyses have been conducted on the entire order of Characiformes and the mechanism responsible for the diversity remains unknown. Here, I conduct a macroevolutionary analysis of body shape diversification to determine if Characiformes evolved through an adaptive radiation. I estimated the first time-calibrated molecular phylogeny for the order Characiformes, assembled the first ever geometric morphometric body shape dataset, and compiled an exhaustive trophic ecology database.
