Ganapati Director Emeritus, ABSTRACT Bombay Leprosy Project, 6/27, Amar Bhuvan, This preliminary presentation based on extensive field studies carried out by Bombay Leprosy Project, a Sion (E), Mumbai, research-oriented NGO, portrays the alarming dimensions of the disease burden felt by rural communities and Maharashtra, India recommends a cost effective field model. This study in an adopted rural population in Shahapur “taluka” of Thane District assumes tremendous significance and is worthy of replication in comparable situations. This is particularly so in the background of the absence in the literature of any similar field studies based entirely on community care of the physically disabled due to leprosy. The magnitude of the problem posed by leprosy patients with disabilities and their rehabilitation is highly challenging and is expected to pose a heavy burden on the community as well as unprecedented strain on the PHCs managed by the government. Lepr Rev (2008) 79, 340–341 Letter to the Editor CAN PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRES OFFER CARE TO THE LEPROSY- DISABLED AFTER INTEGRATION WITH GENERAL HEALTH SERVICES? –A STUDY IN RURAL INDIA We have earlier reported on the disease burden caused by leprosy disabilities in Shahapur, a ‘taluka’ (sub-unit of a district) situated about 100 km from the metropolis of Bombay.1,2 In the population of 2,78,524, a total of 286 patients with disabilities were identified by engaging rural volunteers working under trained supervisory staff. This was the outcome of a campaign in 2003. The area of Shahapur taluka was wide. We could not cover the entire population, some villages being located in inaccessible hilly terrains. As the Primary Health Centre (PHC) is expected to play in future a crucial role in the management of leprosy in an integrated set up, we started an investigation focusing only on the population covered by four PHCs (out of nine) in Shahapur. We intensified the identification of disabilities. The main object was to detect obviously visible deformities (grade 2) due to leprosy after simple training of the volunteers. However a few grade 1 disabilities were also identified and confirmed. Observations In the population of 1,49,029 covered by four PHCs, 407 (grade 2: 344, grade 1: 63) patients as seen in the following table were unearthed representing a prevalence rate (PR) of disabilities alone to the tune of 27·3 per 10 000. Out of these there were 266 patients with deformity newly detected. These were not found in the list of deformed patients provided by the government.

RESEARCH ARTICLE The Kisan Sabha and Adivasi Struggles in Thane District after 1947 Saqib Khan* Abstract: This article traces the history of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) in Thane district, Maharashtra, after 1947, that is, after the Warli Adivasi revolt of 1947. It is based on oral narratives by AIKS activists and leaders and on secondary sources. After the Warli revolt, the AIKS in Thane district mobilised the people around issues of land, forests, water, wages, and other livelihood issues. The article documents and analyses the nature of this mobilisation, the demands raised by the AIKS, and the extent to which these demands achieved success. Our evidence suggests mobilisation was successful because the people posed continuous challenges to multiple forms of exploitation by means of mobilisation by the AIKS on issues of Adivasi livelihood, and as a result of the initiation of welfare programmes through participation in local-level electoral politics. British colonialism effected and aggravated the alienation of the Adivasi people from land and forests in a number of ways (Desai 1979, Prasad 2006–7, Chattopadhyay 2012).

2020 i COMMONWEALTH HUMAN RIGHTS INITIATIVE The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organisation headquartered in New Delhi, India, with offices in London, United Kingdom, and Accra, Ghana. Since 1987, it has advocated, engaged and mobilised around human rights issues in Commonwealth countries. Its specialisations in the areas of Access to Justice (ATJ) and Access to Information (ATI) are widely known. The ATJ programme has focussed on Police and Prison Reforms, to reduce arbitrariness and ensure transparency while holding duty bearers to accountability. CHRI looks at policy interventions, including legal remedies, building civil society coalitions and engaging with stakeholders. The ATI programme looks at Right to Information (RTI) LIFE AND DEATH IN THE TIME OF RTI and Freedom of Information laws across geographies, provides specialised advice, sheds light on challenging issues and processes for widespread use of transparency laws and develops capacity. We review pressures on media and CASE STUDIES FROM MAHARASHTRA media rights while a focus on Small States seeks to bring civil society voices to bear on the UN Human Rights Council and the Commonwealth Secretariat. A new area of work is SDG 8.7 whose advocacy, research and mobilisation across geographies is built on tackling contemporary forms of slavery. CHRI has special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council and is accredited to the Commonwealth Secretariat. Recognised for its expertise by governments, oversight bodies and civil society, CHRI is registered as a society in India, a limited charity in London and an NGO in Ghana. Although the Commonwealth, an association of 54 nations, provided member countries the basis of shared an investigative report by common laws, there was little specific focus on human rights issues in member countries.

Brief of the work done :- On the night of 19/07/2019 at shelavali, khandobachi village Om bungalow in Shahapur taluka the accused broke the iron grill of the bedroom and tied up Mr.Suresh Shanshapaiya Nujaje and beaten to death by an assailant with his hand and feet and killed in a bungalow and forcibly stolen cash, gold and silver ornaments. Thus offence is registered at Shahapur Police Station vide Cr.no. 309/2019 u/s. 302, 460, 396. For immediate resolution of the crime, under the guideline of Inspector General of Police, Konkan Range Shri. Niket Kaushik, Superintendent of police- Shri. Shivaji Rathod, Addl. Superintendent of police Shri. Sanjay Kumar Patil Of Thane Rural formed different teams of policemen of shahapur police station and local crime branch.
