Bibliography of Academic Theses and Dissertations on the American Right Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations, page #1 Theses and Dissertations Pertaining to the Right-Wing…. rev. 09/27/20 A considerable amount of the history of the conservative and extreme right movements in the United States is captured in academic theses and dissertations. Some of them subsequently were published as books – but most were not published and, consequently, they represent a unique and largely unknown resource for serious students of this subject matter. What appears below is a representative sample of this material. I have organized hundreds of titles according to the subject codes shown below. Most titles are available for purchase through ProQuest http://disexpress.umi.com/dxweb –OR- you may obtain them through inter-library loan from your local library. • The Rearguard of Freedom: the John Birch Society and the Development
The Rearguard of Freedom: The John Birch Society and the Development of Modern Conservatism in the United States, 1958-1968 by Bart Verhoeven, MA (English, American Studies), BA (English and Italian Languages) Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts July 2015 Abstract This thesis aims to investigate the role of the anti-communist John Birch Society within the greater American conservative field. More specifically, it focuses on the period from the Society's inception in 1958 to the beginning of its relative decline in significance, which can be situated after the first election of Richard M. Nixon as president in 1968. The main focus of the thesis lies on challenging more traditional classifications of the JBS as an extremist outcast divorced from the American political mainstream, and argues that through their innovative organizational methods, national presence, and capacity to link up a variety of domestic and international affairs to an overarching conspiratorial narrative, the Birchers were able to tap into a new and powerful force of largely white suburban conservatives and contribute significantly to the growth and development of the post-war New Right. For this purpose, the research interrogates the established scholarship and draws upon key primary source material, including official publications, internal communications and the private correspondence of founder and chairman Robert Welch as well as other prominent members. Acknowledgments The process of writing a PhD dissertation seems none too dissimilar from a loving marriage. It is a continuous and emotionally taxing struggle that leaves the individual's ego in constant peril, subjugates mind and soul to an incessant interplay between intense passion and grinding routine, and in most cases should not drag on for over four years.

  • Carl Mcintire and the Politicization of Fundamentalism
No Uncertain Trumpet: Carl McIntire and the Politicization of Fundamentalism A Thesis Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS By Paul Matzko May, 2010 Thesis Approvals: David Watt, Thesis Advisor, Department of History Jonathan Wells, Temple University Department of History ABSTRACT Fundamentalist preacher Carl McIntire played an important role in the politicization of fundamentalism. His political beliefs and activism complicate the standard accountings for the rise of modern conservatism and the New Christian Right. Hispolitics were inherited from Gresham Machen and were rooted in the nineteenth century tension between evangelical Whigs and confessional Democrats. McIntire’s libertarian political philosophy coalesced during the denominational politics of the fundamentalist – modernist controversy of the 1920s and ‘30s.He criticized theological modernists for supporting an expansion of federal government authority and being “soft” on communism. He gained national attention for his campaigns to purchases airtime on radio stations. McIntire influenced a number of prominent fundamentalist leaders, like Billy Hargis, Fred Schwarz, and Francis Schaeffer. McIntire’s political consciousness can be used to describe the concepts of “ideological creep” and “mainstreaming.” i TABLE OF CONTENTS Page ABSTRACT……………………………………………………………………………….i CHAPTER 1. • The Orange County Right Wing and the Battle Over Progressive Education
Politics, America, and Sex: What Could Go Wrong? The Orange County Right Wing and the Battle over Progressive Education Emma Bianco History 101 Thesis Professor M. Brilliant Fall 2018 I. Introduction On November 9th, 2016, while the national press focused on a quite tumultuous presidential election, a subtler revolution took place. For the first time in eighty years, my home county of Orange County, California voted for a democratic presidential candidate (by 39,000 votes).1 A similar process repeated itself in the 2018 midterms: the Democrats gained control all four House seats in Orange County and flipped all seven Republican held seats.2 This dent in the Right’s political monopoly over Orange County suggests a reversal of its staunch conservative nature. During such a tumultuous period in one of the most infamous political regions, I sought to fathom the development of my county’s Republican disposition. However, when conducting preliminary research, I became aware of a fascinating ideological battle within Orange County during the 1960s, centered around a contentious debate of “progressive education.” Amongst a population of 1.4 million in twenty-two cities, with 361,890 children enrolled in public K-12 districts by 1970, this curriculum battle revealed the depth of political influence upon educational policies.3 This all but forgotten incident in Orange County’s history presents an intriguing case study in the development of this 1 Seema Mehta, “Orange County Voted for a Democrat for President for the First Time since the Great Depression,” Los Angeles Times, November 9, 2016, http://www.latimes.com/nation/politics/trailguide/la-na-election-aftermath-updates-trail- orange-county-turns-1478716018-htmlstory.html.

  • An Inquiry Into Contemporary Australian Extreme Right
THE OTHER RADICALISM: AN INQUIRY INTO CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN EXTREME RIGHT IDEOLOGY, POLITICS AND ORGANIZATION 1975-1995 JAMES SALEAM A Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor Of Philosophy Department Of Government And Public Administration University of Sydney Australia December 1999 INTRODUCTION Nothing, except being understood by intelligent people, gives greater pleasure, than being misunderstood by blunderheads. Georges Sorel. _______________________ This Thesis was conceived under singular circumstances. The author was in custody, convicted of offences arising from a 1989 shotgun attack upon the home of Eddie Funde, Representative to Australia of the African National Congress. On October 6 1994, I appeared for Sentence on another charge in the District Court at Parramatta. I had been convicted of participation in an unsuccessful attempt to damage a vehicle belonging to a neo-nazi informer. My Thesis -proposal was tendered as evidence of my prospects for rehabilitation and I was cross-examined about that document. The Judge (whose Sentence was inconsequential) said: … Mr Saleam said in evidence that his doctorate [sic] of philosophy will engage his attention for the foreseeable future; that he has no intention of using these exertions to incite violence.1 I pondered how it was possible to use a Thesis to incite violence. This exercise in courtroom dialectics suggested that my thoughts, a product of my experiences in right-wing politics, were considered acts of subversion. I concluded that the Extreme Right was ‘The Other Radicalism’, understood by State agents as odorous as yesteryear’s Communist Party. My interest in Extreme Right politics derived from a quarter-century involvement therein, at different levels of participation.
