I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract According to the First Amendment of the United States of America, religion is to be separate from the State, yet the heart and faith of voters cannot always be separated from their choices in the polling booth. Media, social groups, and emotions such as fear can im- pact an individual’s choice for a political candidate. This dissertation examines a historical timeline, from the 1930s to the early 1980s, of the interactions of corporations, wealthy individuals and religious leaders. These individuals created a strategic plan to politically mobilize a percentage of conservative Christians, through a Christian libertarianism that reflected a Christianity in support of free enterprise and limited government. In particular, I highlight the influence of the National Association of Manufacturers on the John Birch Society, and the Society’s impact on the Moral Majority and the Council for National Policy. In essence, this dissertation argues that the John Birch Society was foundational in the creation of the rise of the Christian Right in America. Through the use of conspiracy theories linked to Christian apocalyptic thought, the JBS, which was at the time under the leadership of Robert Welch, was able to use morality issues and a perception of declining American morality to incite fear into the hearts and minds of some conservative Christian voters. These morality issues would become the foundation for “culture wars” in the coming decades and a basis for the Moral Majority to instigate a voting bloc for Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Previous scholarship on the JBS has not included its important role in the rise of the New Christian Right, nor its role in the creation of culture wars issues prior to the late 1960s. This dissertation highlights the role of the overlapping belief systems of conspiracy theories and apocalyptic thought in the mobilization of conservative Christians by corpo- rations, wealthy individuals, and religious leaders to elect “truly conservative” candidates supportive of a Christian America that is representative of a Christian libertarian state. iv Acknowledgements Throughout my PhD journey I have been “blessed” with the most amazing PhD Com- mittee, without whom I would not have been able to finish this degree. The World of the John Birch Society: Conspiracy, Conservatism, and the Cold War explains how anti-Communism helped fuel this right-wing group’s conspiracy theories in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Though Mulloy places the John Birch Society within the context of Americans’ long-standing love of conspiracy theories, he also notes how it originated in the culture of Cold War America. The John Birch Society is a right-wing organization whose founding goal was to prevent the United States’ defeat in the Cold War.

    Editor’s Preface “Homeland Fascism Today: An Introduction” Jeff Shantz There is a certain complacency, perhaps arro- gance, among commentators in the United States concerning the prospects for violent uprisings or mo- bilizations in the US. It is widely held that violent uprisings, coups, oppositional movements, will not, even cannot, emerge or take hold in the United States. America is viewed as a stable system with democratic checks and balances and a civil makeup mitigating against such dramatic eruptions in the body politic. Furthermore, truly oppositional move- ments are viewed as being too small, too marginal, or too trivial to pose a real challenge to the liberal democratic order of things in the United States. There are some recurring factors that historically appear as what might be preconditions for dramatic social upheaval and change. These are: extreme eco- nomic inequality; significant, major economic or po- litical crisis or shock, usually unexpected; a middle iii IV | HOMELAND FASCISM strata that feels threatened or is experiencing eco- nomic threats (Judson 2009, 174). Conflict can be triggered by a dramatic event such as a coup d’état, ri- ots, a terrorist attack, etc. (Judson 2009, 174). Responses to these issues are also important. Does the middle strata mobilize against specific scapegoats (migrants, minorities, unionists, etc.) or focus anger at a ruling elite? Does the government lose legitimacy or offer a believable remedy to the problems? Does it maintain legalistic means or resort to force and vio- lence? Conditions typically giving rise to upheaval are present throughout US society. Millions have lost jobs and others the prospect of finding jobs that pay a sus- tainable living wage and/or offer some financial secu- rity.

    251. Chapter VIII Witchcraft as Ma/efice: Witchcraft Case Studies, The Third Phase of The Welsh Antidote to Witchcraft. Witchcraft as rna/efice cases were concerned specifically with the practice of witchcraft, cases in which a woman was brought to court charged with being a witch, accused of practising rna/efice or premeditated harm. The woman was not bringing a slander case against another. She herself was being brought to court by others who were accusing her of being a witch. Witchcraft as rna/efice cases in early modem Wales were completely different from those witchcraft as words cases lodged in the Courts of Great Sessions, even though they were often in the same county, at a similar time and heard before the same justices of the peace. The main purpose of this chapter is to present case studies of witchcraft as ma/efice trials from the various court circuits in Wales. Witchcraft as rna/efice cases in Wales reflect the general type of early modern witchcraft cases found in other areas of Britain, Europe and America, those with which witchcraft historiography is largely concerned. The few Welsh cases are the only cases where a woman was being accused of witchcraft practices. Given the profound belief system surrounding witches and witchcraft in early modern Wales, the minute number of these cases raises some interesting historical questions about attitudes to witches and ways of dealing with witchcraft. The records of the Courts of Great Sessions1 for Wales contain very few witchcraft as rna/efice cases, sometimes only one per county. The actual number, however, does not detract from the importance of these cases in providing a greater understanding of witchcraft typology for early modern Wales.
