Steven's Take on: The Importance of Black Intersectionality As some readers will know, I have been active over the years with the Monterey County Branch NAACP, the local LGBTQ+ Community, Communities of Faith and the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI). NCBI's motto (borrowed from the 3 Musketeers!) is All for One and One for All. Of our many NCBI principles, my favorite is Principle One: Everyone, Every Group, and Every Issue Counts. NCBI starts from the premise that every group and every one of our identities matters.

Hi friend. Welcome to She Said/She Said. Today, we're going to be talking about one of the greatest American success stories. It's the success story of Madam C. J. Walker. Now, she was the first Black woman millionaire in America, a washer woman who literally rose to become an international entrepreneur. She also happened to be the first in her family to have been born free after Emancipation Proclamation. It is an incredible, incredible story. Madam Walker made her fortune by creating a product that she and others needed, but the product actually became the conduit for something that was much more significant and transformational for many women of her generation and that particularly applies to women of color. There are so many things to love about this story.

To this day, watching television is connected with anxieties about the trivialization and banalization of society. At the same time, however, people appreciate it both as a source of information and entertainment. Television is therefore ‘both…and:’ entertainment and anxiety; distraction and allurement; compan- ionship and intrusion. When the role and position of television in culture is ambiguous, personal relations with, attitudes towards, and experiences of television are equally ambivalent, sometimes even contradictory, but the public and academic discourses on television tend to be partial. They focus on the negative impact of television consumption on the viewer, thereby neglecting whatever positive experiences one might associate with it.

These are not particular individuals but rather figures whose significance can be understood against the changing social, political, and cultural life of this increasingly frenetic and fast-paced modern island nation. A decade after the fall of Suharto and the end of the New Order regime, we bring together thirteen anthropologists and one geographer to describe a series of characters—some novel, others more enduring—that in important ways illuminate the current post-authoritarian moment. We understand these and others to be “key 1 All the sections of this essay, except those by Carla Jones and Rachel Silvey, were first presented on November 19, 2008, at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in San Francisco, CA. • “Reading” List!
2021 Black Power Month “Reading” List! Dear 826 Boston community, February 1st began the month-long celebration and recognition of Black peoples’ history in this country and beyond. Throughout the decades, Black people have suffered at the hands of oppressors and despite it being 2021, there is still no justice. As we attempt to eradicate our contribution to these oppressive systems in our professional world, it is important to also increase our knowledge and support for the Black community through resources, such as books, podcasts, films, and tv shows. These texts illuminate the powerful roles Black people have held throughout this oppressive history, as well as celebrate Black joy. We hope you’re staying well, and that these “readings” will increase your knowledge and encourage your own anti-racist work within and beyond Black History Month.
