*A Fraga, 6, Corzáns. Biogeographic relict, extinction risk, global warming, species richness, sub-alpine prairies Abstract. During the last few decades the tree line has shifted upward on Mediterranean mountains. This has resulted in a decrease in the area of the sub-alpine prairie habitat and an increase in the threat to strictly orophilous moths that occur there. This also occurred on the Pollino Massif due to the increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall in Southern Italy. We found that a number of moths present in the alpine prairie at 2000 m appear to be absent from similar habitats at 1500–1700 m. Some of these species are thought to be at the lower latitude margin of their range. Among them, Pareulype berberata and Entephria flavicinctata are esti- mated to be the most threatened because their populations are isolated and seem to be small in size. The tops of these mountains are inhabited by specialized moth communities, which are strikingly different from those at lower altitudes on the same massif further south. The majority of the species recorded in the sub-alpine prairies studied occur most frequently and abundantly in the core area of the Pollino Massif.

  • Zoogeography of the Holarctic Species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): Importance of the Bering Ian Refuge
© Entomologica Fennica. 8.XI.l991 Zoogeography of the Holarctic species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): importance of the Bering ian refuge Kauri Mikkola, J, D. Lafontaine & V. S. Kononenko Mikkola, K., Lafontaine, J.D. & Kononenko, V. S. 1991 : Zoogeography of the Holarctic species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): importance of the Beringian refuge. - En to mol. Fennica 2: 157- 173. As a result of published and unpublished revisionary work, literature compi lation and expeditions to the Beringian area, 98 species of the Noctuidae are listed as Holarctic and grouped according to their taxonomic and distributional history. Of the 44 species considered to be "naturall y" Holarctic before this study, 27 (61 %) are confirmed as Holarctic; 16 species are added on account of range extensions and 29 because of changes in their taxonomic status; 17 taxa are deleted from the Holarctic list. This brings the total of the group to 72 species. Thirteen species are considered to be introduced by man from Europe, a further eight to have been transported by man in the subtropical areas, and five migrant species, three of them of Neotropical origin, may have been assisted by man. The m~jority of the "naturally" Holarctic species are associated with tundra habitats. The species of dry tundra are frequently endemic to Beringia. In the taiga zone, most Holarctic connections consist of Palaearctic/ Nearctic species pairs. The proportion ofHolarctic species decreases from 100 % in the High Arctic to between 40 and 75 % in Beringia and the northern taiga zone, and from between 10 and 20 % in Newfoundland and Finland to between 2 and 4 % in southern Ontario, Central Europe, Spain and Primorye.

E-mail: [email protected] The paper contains data on the fauna of the Lepidoptera families Erebidae (excluding subfamilies Lymantriinae and Arctiinae) and Noctuidae of the Saur Mountains (East Kazakhstan). The check list includes 216 species. The map of collecting localities is presented. Key words: Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Erebidae, Asia, Kazakhstan, Saur, fauna. INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately.

The first involves servicing a national network of recorders which was set up in the winter of 1990/91 to trawl information on the current national distribution, status and conservation requirements of the rarer species of macro-moths in Britain. The information collected is being used to organise surveys and produce national surveys and produce national distribution maps, data sheets and a bibliography for the rarer moths. The rarer macro-moths have been defined as those species believed to occur in less than one hundred of the 10 km squares in Britain. Approximately 280 of the 730 or more macro-moth species that breed in Britain are in this category now. The collected information is used by the government conservation agencies to identify important breeding sites and advise on their management. Since its inception in 1987 the Moth Conservation Project has also been involved in devising and assisting practical conservation measures for a number of rare moths including six species of moths which receive legal protection in Britain and are listed on Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and 1988 amendment. These six are Zygaena viciae argyllensis Tremewan, Thetidia smaragdaria maritima Prout, Pareulype berberata Denis & Schiffer- müller, Siona lineata Scopoli, Acosmetia caliginosa Hübner and Hadena irregularis Hufnagel.

S. 250 Ohio 83 South Wooster, Ohio CONTENTS ***** Introduction l Bibliography 3 Index 35 AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE SPOTTED CUTWORM, Amathes c-nigrum (Linnaeus)l Roy W. Rings 2 and Beth A. Johnson3 Introduction The purpose of this research circular is to consolidate the abstracted litera ture on the spotted cutworm, Amathes c-nigrum (Linnaeus). This publication brings together research and extension information on developmental biology, ecology, host range, habits, geographical and seasonal distribution, and control for pest manage ment purposes. It is not intended for taxonomic studies since most faunal lists, museum lists, and checklists cannot be abstracted for the literature retrieval of a single species. This cutworm was originally described by Linnaeus in 1758 as Noctua c-nigrum. Since then the specific name has been constant but the generic name has undergone many changes such as Segetia, Lytaea, Megasema, Rhyacia, Graphiphora, Diarsia, and Agrotis. The spotted cutworm ranges throughout the United States and southern Canada. It occurs in many European countries as well as in China and Russia. This cutworm is a bivoltine species and hibernates as a partially grown larva. The egg, six larval instars, pupa, and moth are described by Crumb (1929). The moth is also described by Forbes (1954) and is illustrated in color by Holland (1934) and Rockburne et al. (1976). The species is mentioned as a pest, sometimes of considerable proportions, in the literature on economic entomology. The first outbreaks of spotted cutworms were mentioned by Caesar in 1923 in Ontario.

Abstract: The higher altitudes of the Bavarian highlands host a montaneous determined insect fauna with numerous species of arcto-alpine distribution. Little data have been published so far from the East Bavarian mountain ranges “Ober- pfälzer Wald” and “Bayerischer Wald”, and only a few publications of recent date exist concerning the insect fauna of the montane and alpine altitudes of the Bavarian Alps. Therefore in this paper remarkable records—comprising a lot of first and again findings—of Lepidoptera, Trichoptera, Neuropteroidea, Ephemeroptera, and Odonata are published.
