BANGS,' TOTO SOELARTO,3 BARODJI,3 BIMO P WICAKSANA'AND DAMAR TRI BOEWONO3 ABSTRACT, The routine colonization of Anopheles maculatus, a reputed malaria vector from Central Java, is described. The strain is free mating and long lived in the laboratory. This species will readily bloodfeed on small rodents and artificial membrane systems. Either natural or controlled temperatures, humidity, and lighting provide acceptable conditions for continuous rearing. A simple larval diet incorporating a l0:4 powdered mixture of a.i"a beef and rice hulls proved acceptable. Using a variety of simple tools and procedures, this colony strain appears readily adaptable to rearing under most laboratory conditions. This appears to be the first report of continuous colonization using a free-mating sffain of An. maculatus. Using this simple, relatively inexpensive method of mass colonization adds to the short list of acceptable laboratory populations used in the routine production of human-infecting plasmodia. • The Dominant Anopheles Vectors of Human Malaria in the Asia-Pacific
Sinka et al. Parasites & Vectors 2011, 4:89 http://www.parasitesandvectors.com/content/4/1/89 RESEARCH Open Access The dominant Anopheles vectors of human malaria in the Asia-Pacific region: occurrence data, distribution maps and bionomic précis Marianne E Sinka1*, Michael J Bangs2, Sylvie Manguin3, Theeraphap Chareonviriyaphap4, Anand P Patil1, William H Temperley1, Peter W Gething1, Iqbal RF Elyazar5, Caroline W Kabaria6, Ralph E Harbach7 and Simon I Hay1,6* Abstract Background: The final article in a series of three publications examining the global distribution of 41 dominant vector species (DVS) of malaria is presented here. The first publication examined the DVS from the Americas, with the second covering those species present in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Here we discuss the 19 DVS of the Asian-Pacific region. This region experiences a high diversity of vector species, many occurring sympatrically, which, combined with the occurrence of a high number of species complexes and suspected species complexes, and behavioural plasticity of many of these major vectors, adds a level of entomological complexity not comparable elsewhere globally. To try and untangle the intricacy of the vectors of this region and to increase the effectiveness of vector control interventions, an understanding of the contemporary distribution of each species, combined with a synthesis of the current knowledge of their behaviour and ecology is needed. Results: Expert opinion (EO) range maps, created with the most up-to-date expert knowledge of each DVS distribution, were combined with a contemporary database of occurrence data and a suite of open access, environmental and climatic variables.

148 CHAPTER 1 • MOSQUITOS AND OTHER BITING DIPTERA Many wells have been abandoned following the installation of piped water supplies. Filling them would be an effective solution. If wells have to remain available for possible reuse the introduction of larvivorous fish could also be considered. In places not subject to flooding, an effective and long-lasting solution is the application of a layer of polystyrene beads (p. 146). Small pools of clean water are often found on construction sites and in the basements of buildings. They should be filled up or drained. In some cases larvivorous fish (p. 123) or larvicides (p. 128) such as oil are appropriate. Pools of relatively clean water are often formed near standpipes that do not have a proper drainage system, such as a gutter or a soakaway pit. Breeding sites with polluted water Culex quinquefasciatus, the vector of urban filariasis in some areas, breeds in on-site sanitation systems such as wet pit latrines, septic tanks, cesspits, cesspools, drains and canals containing stagnant water polluted with organic waste. They also breed in polluted water associated with home industries, for example in coconut husk pits. Other breeding sites are pools and disused wells used for dumping garbage. Culex gelidus, an important vector of Japanese encephalitis in south-east Asia, also breeds in polluted water. Pit latrines are the main breeding sites of blowflies (Chrysomyia), which are sometimes present in large numbers and may carry disease agents from faeces to food. Pit latrines Pit latrines, used for the disposal of human excreta, basically consist of a hole in the ground covered with a floor with a hole and surrounded by walls to provide privacy.

  • Mutations in the Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Gene of Anophelines And
Silva et al. Parasites & Vectors 2014, 7:450 http://www.parasitesandvectors.com/content/7/1/450 REVIEW Open Access Mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel gene of anophelines and their association with resistance to pyrethroids – a review Ana Paula B Silva1, Joselita Maria M Santos1 and Ademir J Martins2,3* Abstract Constant and extensive use of chemical insecticides has created a selection pressure and favored resistance development in many insect species worldwide. One of the most important pyrethroid resistance mechanisms is classified as target site insensitivity, due to conformational changes in the target site that impair a proper binding of the insecticide molecule. The voltage-gated sodium channel (NaV) is the target of pyrethroids and DDT insecticides, used to control insects of medical, agricultural and veterinary importance, such as anophelines. It has been reported that the presence of a few non-silent point mutations in the NaV gene are associated with pyrethroid resistance, termed as ‘kdr’ (knockdown resistance) for preventing the knockdown effect of these insecticides. The presence of these mutations, as well as their effects, has been thoroughly studied in Anopheles mosquitoes. So far, kdr mutations have already been detected in at least 13 species (Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles arabiensis, Anopheles sinensis, Anopheles stephensi, Anopheles subpictus, Anopheles sacharovi, Anopheles culicifacies, Anopheles sundaicus, Anopheles aconitus, Anopheles vagus, Anopheles paraliae, Anopheles peditaeniatus and Anopheles albimanus) from populations of African, Asian and, more recently, American continents. Seven mutational variants (L1014F, L1014S, L1014C, L1014W, N1013S, N1575Y and V1010L) were described, with the highest prevalence of L1014F, which occurs at the 1014 site in NaV IIS6 domain.
