I also want to thank Tod Goldberg for accepting me into the program and for his very insightful comments on my work. The smart, thoughtful feedback from Mary Yukari Waters was also instrumental in getting my story where it needed to be. Thanks also to my many colleagues at UCR who provided very valuable comments on my work and whose work I too admire. I am so lucky to have had you as friends in this program, so much so that I copied verbatim the first half of this sentence from the sample acknowledgments page in the thesis review packet. Last, I want to thank my parents Suresh and Shaila Supekar who gave me the stories to tell and the desire to tell them by virtue of just being here, in America, as immigrants who left so much behind in India. And of course, none of my work would be possible without the love—upon which everything is built, really—from my partner Arturo Aguilar, who pushed me to follow my dream and has supported me in every way throughout this journey.

  • The Case of Rihanna: Erotic Violence and Black Female Desire
Fleetwood_Fleetwood 8/15/2013 10:52 PM Page 419 Nicole R. Fleetwood The Case of Rihanna: Erotic Violence and Black Female Desire Note: This article was drafted prior to Rihanna and Chris Brown’s public reconciliation, though their rekindled romance supports many of the arguments outlined herein. Fig. 1: Cover of Esquire, November 2011 issue, U. S. Edition. Photograph by Russell James. he November 2011 issue of Esquire magazine declares Rihanna “the sexiest Twoman alive.” On the cover, Rihanna poses nude with one leg propped, blocking view of her breast and crotch. The entertainer stares out provocatively, with mouth slightly ajar. Seaweed clings to her glistening body. A small gun tattooed under her right arm directs attention to her partially revealed breast. Rihanna’s hands brace her body, and her nails dig into her skin. The feature article and accompanying photographs detail the hyperbolic hotness of the celebrity; Ross McCammon, the article’s author, acknowledges that the pop star’s presence renders him speechless and unable to keep his composure. Interwoven into anecdotes and narrative scenes explicating Rihanna’s desirability as a sexual subject are her statements of her sexual appetite and the pleasure that she finds in particular forms of sexual play that rehearse gendered power inequity and the titillation of pain. That Rihanna’s right arm is carefully positioned both to show the tattoo of the gun aimed at her breast, and that her fingers claw into her flesh, commingle sexual pleasure and pain, erotic desire and violence. Here and elsewhere, Rihanna employs her body as a stage for the exploration of modes of violence structured into hetero- sexual desire and practices.

  • Three for All Chapter 1
Three For All Chapter 1 Harry heard the knock at the door and answered it, despite his aunt's order that he was not to touch the door when no one was at home. He opened it to find a girl with spiked hair in a shade of blue that made Harry think of a nuclear reaction. She was wearing a spaghetti strap top and a skirt that almost demanded that Harry stare at her legs, but he was not going to fall for that. "Hey, Tonks! How are you?" Besides being rude, if I stare at her legs, she's gonna comment and embarrass the hell out of me. "Pretty good, Harry. How're you?" She gently pushed her way into the house. "So, ol' horse-face gone for now?" "Yeah, Aunt Petunia is out of the house for the day, and 'Dudders' is out wherever it … I mean he gets to. What's up?" "Nothing. Just doing the usual check-in, and it was decided that I would probably be best for it. At least if I show up, there can be talk of your girlfriend dropping by for a visit." She laughed. "People might talk if Moody showed up too often." Harry thought for a moment what she might be talking about, and then shuddered as he laughed. "Woo…people thinking he's my lover? Yeesh. I'd rather be linked with Malfoy than that !" Tonks laughed so hard that she fell to the floor, and the skirt rode even higher, high enough that he caught a glimpse of knickers.

DUTTON NEW YORK ACKNOWLEDGMENTS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Different friends read this book in various versions. Each had a wholly unique and personal set of criteria that they brought to the project. I thank them for their time and attention, especially Maxine Wolfe, Bettina Berch, Abigail Child, Christie Cassidy, Meg Wolitzer, Julia Scher, David Leavitt, Shelley Wald, Michael Korie, Stewart Wallace, Beryl Satter, Robert Hilferty and Ana Maria Simo. People in Trouble was financed, in part, through generous grants and loans from Charlie Schulman, Susan Seizer, my parents, Jennifer Miller, Abigail Child, Rachel Pfeffer, Beryl Satter, Diane Cleaver with Sanford Greenburger Associates, the Mac- Dowell Colony, Cummington Community for the Arts, and the Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. I thank them for their support and patience. My editor, Carole DeSanti, engaged this book with a high level of concentration and creativity. I am grateful for her insightful and intelligent contributions throughout the many drafts. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Vll It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but their social being that determines their consciousness. KARL MARX AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA It was the beginning of the end of the world but not everyone noticed right away. Some people were dying. Some people were busy. Some people were cleaning their houses while the war movie played on television. The cigarette in the mouth of the woman behind the register was cemented with purple lipstick. She had lipstick smeared on her smock. Tiny caterpillars of gray ash decorated the sticky glass countertop.

[He bites a large piece out of the apple, and munches it noisily.] You see, Eliza, all men are not confirmed old bachelors like me and the Colonel. Most men are the marrying sort (poor devils!); and you’re not bad-looking; it’s quite a pleasure to look at you sometimes—not now, of course, because you’re crying and looking as ugly as the very devil; but when you’re all right and quite yourself, you’re what I should call attractive. 1. What action does Higgins assume Eliza can take in order to provide for herself? 2. What does Higgins assume makes Eliza an eligible woman for marrying?
