Sunday 12 pm to 4 pm 2012 Inside Shows 12505 NW Cornell Road A man’s home may be his castle but I like mine to be the image of a serious studio. My mornings start Portland, Oregon 97229 with a jolt. Ryan Egge, Building Owner 503.201.9938 I was schooled in Austria where humorless professors conducted highly disciplined classes. It’s not that they lacked a sense for laughter; they just thought frivolity had no place in the hallowed ateliers of their school.

After four years of art training I emerged as a metal engraver, bestowing decorative designs onto metal objects from silver platters to jewelry. I remember balking at mandatory classes of metallurgy: Heat treating, crystal structures, metal testing and such. But, unbelievably to me, it was precisely this knowledge, in combination with metal decoration, that kept me in college teaching positions for twenty one years. Artist Reception Happily, after retirement, I have come back to November-Bonnie Tucker Sunday, October 9th painting. While my style of watercolor art reflects my old school, the classes I teach ring out with Noon—2:00pm laughter and frolic. December-Joanna Hay Page 2 The Village Gallery of Arts October 2011

President’s Message We thank the following

I am happy to report that things are going smoothly at our gallery. Village Gallery Patrons We have completed projects and others are in the planning stages. Our finances are in order, thanks to Britt, and he tells us we are finan- Van Gogh cially sound. This is an accomplishment, I believe, in this economy. Ken & Dolores Findley In addition to the AMP picnic that just took place there are two other educational events coming up on Sept. 20th and Nov. 15th from Picasso Level 6:30pm—8pm at the gallery. Please refer to the last page of this news- letter for the meeting topics, or check our website for details. Art Media Bethany Frame Central Last but not least, our newly redesigned website www.villagegalleryarts.org went "live" in August. VGA member Chrisman Picture Frame & Gallery Kathryn Delaney did a great job of remodeling the site with input Jerry R. Hrabal, from Liz Walker and Marlene Huntsinger (who are both now learning how to add new artists’ galleries to the site). Included on our site is a State Farm Insurance calendar of events (which we are slowly adding to) and useful member Jon Roth documents you can download when needed. If you have been a VGA Pete Rux member for at least 6 months and you'd like to have your own artist's gallery on the site, please email Liz ([email protected]) to learn John Mohney how to get started. Six members are already in the queue to be added Judy Vatne --we'd like to see even more of you join up! Please consider joining these members & friends of VGA to support our gallery Bobbie Willard, President Village Gallery Inside Show Schedule for 2012

FINE ART CLASSES (continued) Watercolor Choices ~ Chris Keylock Williams, NWS Often, the key to a successful painting is determined by the initial choices you make before even beginning. What paper to use? Size of painting? Subject? Style? Equipment? Wet start-Dry start? Techniques? Colorful? Subtle? To be honest, we also sometimes let the painting evolve. We may begin one way and then change directions. In this class we will explore many options, techniques, equipment, etc. Be prepared to have FUN AND FABULOUS PAINTINGS!!

Acrylic & Mixed Media:Techniques & Projects for Watermedia Painters ~ Liz Walker Overcome your fear of the blank page as you learn to develop colorful underpaintings and develop subject matter in an intuitive, free-form manner while uniquely expressing the "you" in your work. In a series of hands-on exercises and demos, you will learn how to use fluid acrylics on paper and small canvases, add tissue/ papers where needed, and use texture and pattern making tools to enhance the impact of your paintings. This workshop is ideal for artists who currently work in acrylics, but is also perfect for the experienced watercolor artist who wants to make the leap into working with acrylics. This technique can even be used to cover over and enhance old watercolor paintings! Weekly critiques help all participants refine and improve their paintings. If you find it difficult to paint alone and want to kick your work up to the next level, this is the course for you. In this supportive environment, many participants return monthly to enjoy personalized instruction, camaraderie with other artists, and tips on how to further develop your paintings. E-mail Liz at [email protected] for a supply list at registration. The focus changes monthly, but often projects continue. WORKSHOPS

64 Squares: Watermedia Workshop ~ Liz Walker (watercolor or acrylic your choice) We’ve all done a square painting—but what about a painting that consists of 64 squares within the larger square? The effect is almost like that of a or quilt. I will show you some examples, and we will each create our own 64 square painting. This is an enjoyable, almost Zen-like way to build a painting - square by square. Things to bring with you: One full sheet (22 x 30 inches) piece of cold press Arches watercolor paper (#140 or #300) cut 8 inches off so that the overall paper size is 22 x 22 inches. Use a yardstick to rule off your paper very lightly in pencil in a grid so that each of the 64 squares measure 2 ¾ inches. Bring your regular watercolor or acrylic palette, brushes, etc. as well as 4-5 small photos of a favorite subject that might be used as an overall theme. For example, for a beach theme painting, I looked at photos I’d taken of seaweed, tidal pools, beach foam, driftwood and sand dollars. Adults, All levels Saturday Sept. 24 10:00am – 2:00pm Cost: $50 Page 6 The Village Gallery of Arts October 2011
