Multiple projects scheduled in Kane and DuPage area

Investments made possible by Gov. Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois capital plan

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that multiple improvement projects in Kane and DuPage counties are scheduled to get underway beginning this spring. The seven projects represent a total investment of more than $41 million for the region, made possible by Gov. JB Pritzker’s bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program.

“With the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, we are restoring and transforming Illinois’s aging infrastructure,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Rebuild Illinois is not only about investing in infrastructure but about investing in people and communities as well. In the coming months, IDOT will undertake projects that will ultimately create safer roads and bridges and provide jobs in Kane and DuPage counties and across the entire state.”

Projects include:

• Interstate 55 at , DuPage County Deck overlay and bridge repairs. All lanes of I-55 will be maintained throughout construction, with occasional overnight lane closures as needed. The project is scheduled to begin this summer and completed in late 2023. • I-55 at Lemont Road, DuPage County The existing bridge will be replaced with a wider bridge, with the interstate reconstructed to accommodate the wider structure. All lanes of I-55 and access to Lemont Road will be maintained throughout the project. Work is scheduled to begin this summer and completed in fall 2023. • Illinois 83 (Kingery Highway) from Third Avenue to Illinois 171 (), DuPage County Ongoing project to modernize traffic signals, install rumble strips, new pavement markings and replace sections of guardrail. Daily lane closures and occasional overnight lane closures are anticipated. The project started in summer 2020 and is anticipated to be completed this summer. • Illinois 31 (Lake Street) from Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) to Rathbone Avenue, Kane County Resurfacing project with new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. Daily lane closures will be needed to complete the project, which is scheduled to begin this spring and completed this fall. • Illinois 31 () from Strom Drive to West Road, Kane County Ongoing resurfacing project with new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, improved drainage, and repairs to the State Street bridge over U.S. 20 (Elgin Bypass). Daily lane closures needed to complete resurfacing work. The project started last summer and is anticipated to be completed this fall. • Illinois 47 at Main Street, Kane County Ongoing project to replace the existing bridge, reconstruct the intersection and modernize traffic signals. One lane in each direction is maintained during construction. The project started in 2019 and is anticipated to be completed in summer 2022. • Illinois 72 (Oak Knoll Drive) at Getzelman Road/State Street, Kane County Intersection improvement project, with new traffic signals, paving, ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, along with improved drainage and lighting. One lane in each direction will be maintained on Illinois 72 during construction. State Street will be closed for several months and Getzelman Road will be closed for several weeks. Detours will be in place. The project is scheduled to begin this summer and completed in late 2022.

“These projects represent a significant investment in Kane and DuPage counties and are a big step forward in our work to improve safety, mobility and create economic opportunity for years to come,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “We’re asking drivers to be patient, slow down and pay extra attention driving in and around any work zone.”

In addition to improving roads and bridges, Rebuild Illinois identifies in the area $400 million for the CREATE program, $500 million to establish passenger rail to the Quad Cities and Rockford, and $4 billion for the Regional Transportation Authority, which oversees the Chicago Transit Authority, and Pace.

Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois is investing $33.2 billion into the state’s aging transportation system, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history but also the first one that touches all modes of Illinois transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
