  • Project Description
Chicago to Quad Cities Passenger Rail Project Grade Crossing Design Illinois DOT - Various Locations Project Description The project provides Program Management along with planning and preliminary engineering services for the Illinois Department of Transportation to implement passenger rail service on the Chicago to Iowa City corridor within the State of Illinois project limits. The Chicago-Iowa City Passenger Rail Service Development Program of Iowa and Illinois will establish passenger rail service between Chicago, the Quad Cities, Illinois and Iowa City, Iowa, 219.5 miles. The service will be hosted by BNSF Railway (BNSF) and Iowa Interstate Railroad (IAIS), and be operated by Amtrak. New stations will be established at Geneseo and Moline, Illinois (serving the Quad Cities); and Iowa City, Iowa. The service will be part of the Midwest Regional Rail Imitative (MWRRI) designated by the Secretary of Transportation as a high-speed rail corridor in 1992. The initial Chicago-Iowa City passenger-train service will consist of two roundtrip trains daily, operating at a maximum speed of 79 mph. Ridership is estimated by Amtrak at 246,800 passengers in the Program’s opening year, and 447,000 passengers per year by 2045. The alignment of the route is suited to high-speed passenger-train operation, and had previously hosted passenger trains exceeded 100-mph. Station access to major traffic sources such as the University of Iowa, and travel patterns are all favorable to high initial ridership. The States envision future increases in maximum speed to 110 mph, increases in frequency of trains, and extension of the service to Omaha, Nebraska.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 5, 2014 CONTACT: Mayor’s Press Office 312.744.3334 [email protected] Pete Scales, CDOT (312) 744-0707 [email protected] MAYOR EMANUEL ANNOUNCES CITY REACHES HALFWAY POINT OF 100-MILE GOAL FOR PROTECTED BIKE LANES BY 2015 Next 20 Miles Installed This Spring; 30 More Miles in Design Phase Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is halfway finished with the plan to install 100 miles of protected bike lanes by 2015, and is on track to achieve that milestone by early next year. “Improving our bicycling facilities is critical to creating the quality of life in Chicago that attracts businesses and families to the city,” Mayor Emanuel said. “We are making Chicago the most bike-friendly city in the United States.” Twenty more miles of protected bike lanes will be installed this spring and summer, with the remaining 30 miles in design phase and planned for installation later this year and early 2015. In 2013, CDOT installed 31 miles of new or restriped facilities, including 19 miles of protected bike lanes, bringing the number of protected bike lanes installed in Chicago since Mayor Emanuel came into office in May 2011 to 49 miles. Chicago’s bikeways now total more than 207 miles, according to CDOT’s report, 2013 Bikeways – Year In Review, which was released today. “Chicago is a national leader in building new and improved cycling facilities and setting a new standard for other cities to follow,” said CDOT Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld. “We are looking forward to continuing our bikeways construction efforts this summer to make Chicago the best cycling city in America.” Bikeways achievements in 2013 include: • Chicago’s first Neighborhood Greenway on Berteau Avenue • Bicycle-friendly treatments on three bridges • Installation of 12 bike corrals • 35,000 cyclists counted in monthly biking data collection events • Installation of 300 Divvy bike-share stations In addition to installing new lanes, maintenance of existing facilities continued as well.

  • The Rock Island Arsenal and Rock Island in the World Wars
Western Illinois Historical Review © 2020 Volume XI, Spring 2020 ISSN 2153-1714 ‘Rock Island Needs Machinists’: The Rock Island Arsenal and Rock Island in the World Wars By Jordan Monson Western Illinois University “Availability of workers… was vital to the successful operation of Rock Island Arsenal in the World War, just as it must be in any future military crisis in which the country may become involved.”1 Industries and businesses have a huge impact on the development of a community. No business can be successful without labor provided by communities, and communities rarely grow without the availability of jobs provided by businesses. In this same way, the Rock Island Arsenal has had a huge impact on the surrounding communities of Rock Island, Moline, Davenport, and Bettendorf, collectively known as the Quad Cities. Indeed, in an article published in 2018, Aarik Woods points out that the Rock Island Arsenal is far and away the largest employer in the region, and the economic impact of the Arsenal on the Quad Cities was more than one billion dollars.2 With that large of an economic impact, it is safe to say that the success of the Arsenal and the success of the Quad Cities are tied at the hip. However, the Rock Island Arsenal often goes through extreme variation in production and employment numbers, with “The Arsenal’s employment and production traditionally being cyclical in nature… increasing during national emergencies and declining during peacetime.”3 These mobilization and demobilization patterns of the Arsenal were most pronounced during the period between the first and second world wars.

COVID 19 UPDATE REPORT Our NIISSA COVID‐19 WJOB Facebook Live update can be found at our website NIISSA.org Governor Holcomb's Roadmap to Safely Reopen Indiana ‐> backontrack.in.gov If you shop on Amazon, please use smile.amazon.com Amazon will donate to your desired organization. If you choose Northwest Information Sharing and Security Alliance, we will get donations from Amazon. June 1st, 2020 (stats from May 30st, 2020) as of 12:00pm Local: Indiana 34,574 confirmed cases with 1,967 confirmed deaths – in all 92 counties – 261,546 tested, now that states are trying to re‐open while taking precaution, we will address how to proceed. Illinois 120,260 confirmed cases in 102 counties, 5,390confirmed deaths, 898259people tested. Governor Holcomb has used data to drive decisions since our first case of the novel coronavirus in early March. That will continue to be our practice as we contemplate a sector‐by‐sector reset. To get Back‐On‐Track, Indiana must continue to stay ahead of COVID‐19. To do this, we will employ a three‐pronged approach to detect the virus through robust testing, trace identified cases to prevent its spread, and protect Hoosiers as they return to work and the economy by developing a steady supply line of personal protective equipment. RAPID DETECTION THROUGH TESTING • Nearly 200 testing sites are available throughout the state. These include state‐provided, private, and community‐ sponsored locations. The goal is to test more than 100,000 Hoosiers per month. • In addition, the Indiana State Department of Health continues to deploy a dozen strike teams to quickly respond to suspected cases in high‐risk congregate settings, including long‐term care facilities, prisons and jails, and some large‐ scale essential employers.
