Open Letter to President-elect Trump: Negotiate Nuclear Zero As president of the United States, you will have the grave responsibility of assuring that nuclear weapons are not overtly threatened or used during your term of office. The most certain way to fulfill this responsibility is to negotiate with the other possessors of nuclear weapons for their total elimination. The U.S. is obligated under Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to engage in such negotiations in good faith for an end to the nuclear arms race and for nuclear disarmament. A nuclear war, any nuclear war, would be an act of insanity. Between nuclear weapons states, it would lead to the destruction of the attacking nation as well as the attacked. Between the U.S. and Russia, it would threaten the survival of humanity. There are still more than 15,000 nuclear weapons in the world, of which the United States possesses approximately 7,000. Some 1,000 of these remain on hair-trigger alert. A similar number remain on hair-trigger alert in Russia. This is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Even if nuclear weapons are not used intentionally, they could be used inadvertently by accident or miscalculation. Nuclear weapons and human fallibility are a dangerous mix. Nuclear deterrence presupposes a certain view of human behavior. It depends on the willingness of political leaders to act rationally under all circumstances, even those of extreme stress. It provides no guarantees or physical protection. It could fail spectacularly and tragically. You have suggested that more nations – such as Japan, South Korea and even Saudi Arabia – may need to develop their own nuclear arsenals because the U.S. -

Totalism and Thought Reform in America's Universities Robert S. Griffin 2011 In the summer of 2011, I received an e-mail message from the president of my university--I'm a professor of education--addressed to all faculty and staff that included the following. We are requiring all first-year students to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot over the summer. The book chronicles the life of Henrietta Lacks, a poor African American migrant worker from the tobacco farms of Virginia, whose cells were taken without her knowledge sixty years ago. Henrietta Lacks' cells became one of the most important tools in medicine, including breakthroughs leading to polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Her cells have been bought and sold countless times over while she has remained unknown and neither she nor her family have benefitted in any way. As Rebecca Skloot's website states, "The Immoral Life of Henrietta Lacks tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew. It's a story inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we're made of. The President went on to note that 2,400 students would be reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and that faculty from a variety of academic disciplines would be using the book in their classes. He urged all members of the university community to read the book and explore ways to engage in discussions around it, whether inside or outside the classroom. -

He is co-founder of Global Lawyers and Physicians and a member of the Committee on Human Rights of the National Academies of Science. Abstract How is it possible? What are the personal, professional and political contexts that allow physicians to use their skills to torture and kill rather than heal? What are the psychological characteristics and the social, cultural and political factors that predispose physicians to participate in human rights abuses? What can be done to recognize at-risk situations and attempt to provide corrective or preventive strategies? This article examines case studies from Nazi Germany in an attempt to answer these questions. Subjects discussed include the psychology of the individual perpetrator, dehumanization, numbing, splitting, omnipotence, medicalization, group dynamics, obedience to authority, diffusion of responsibility, theories of aggression, training, cultural and social contexts, accountability and prevention. Torture is a particularly horrible crime, and any participation of physicians in torture has always been difficult to comprehend. -

How Do We Discern Dystopian Dynamics and Totalitarian Tactics? POST SUMMARY: This post introduces and overviews Robert Jay Lifton’s eight criteria for totalitarian thought reform (“brainwashing”) systems. It also gives some learning exercises for two groups: survivors of spiritual abuse and their personal network, and organizational designers/leaders who want to develop healthy and sustainable ministries. Note: I have split this material into three parts so readers can receive the best benefit from it. Part 5A prepares our thinking with a review of previous points in the series for discerning an abusive/dystopian system, thoughts on totalitarian tactics from The Hunger Games trilogy, and the “before” part of the learning exercise. Part 5B summarizes Dr. Lifton’s system for identifying “cults” and how the various elements work together. It then explores the first four of his eight criteria, dealing with: communications, motivations, absolutism, and confession. Part 5C explores the final four of Dr. Lifton’s eight criteria: ultimate vision, language, ideological conformity, and ostracism. It also gives the “after” part of the learning exercise, and draws out three key issues for putting “brainwashing” into perspective. Miller 1 Samantha Miller June 10th, 2020 HIST 461-07 Murphy The Holocaust and Human Experimentation: The Nazi Approach to Medicine The beginning months of 1945 marked the commencement of the swift downfall of the Nazi regime and the end of the tyrannical, oppressive ruling power it held over most of Europe for close to a decade. As Allied Forces invaded Nazi Germany and the remaining Nazi-occupied territories, they undoubtedly expected to encounter the incredible devastation that World War II had left upon most of the Western European continent, from toppled cities, to separated families, to the rising death toll. However, Allied soldiers would soon have to come face to face with another side-effect of the war, something unforeseen and unimaginable, even in their wildest dreams: the reality of concentration camps and the horrors that existed within. Upon arriving at any given concentration camp, all who passed through the iron gate, be that soldiers or prisoners, read the German phrase “Arbeit Macht Frei” as it was engraved, painted, or wielded into the sign above the entrance, providing the prisoners with the illusion that their hard work would eventually ensure their freedom. Stepping inside the electrically-barbed barricades and stone walls, soldiers had to confront the horrendous conditions in which prisoners were forced to live: disease running rampant, extreme starvation, tediously pointless labor, overcrowding, and the mass executions carried out inside the on-site gas chambers. A member of the United States Army’s Third 8th Tank Battalion, Albin Irzyk, was a part of the liberation effort at the Buchenwald camp in April of 1945 and described his findings in ghastly detail, stating that what he saw “looked like bundles of ragged clothing in an elliptical circle. -

An anti-Freudian groupthink cultural climate has discouraged political analysts from so much as dabbling in psychoanalysis (though dabbling of course can do as much damage as kneejerk hostility). So when social scientists muster the nerve to venture into inner worlds of their subject matter, they much prefer the safety of cognitive frameworks insofar as they lend themselves to formulaic findings, easy quantification and fashionable but dubious artificial ‘experiments.’3 For their part, psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, with notable exceptions, hardly have been eager to tread en masse into the interpretive perils of our 21st century political terrain.4 Erich Fromm, Erik Erikson, Bruno Bettelheim, Robert Jay Lifton and other earlier psychoanalytic luminaries have not spawned a new generation of critical public intellectuals of similar stature, at least not any who can gain traction outside of a tiny handful of specialized journals.5 Yet few social scientists deny that psychological factors exert influence on political events, and vice versa. The magisterial international relations Realist Hans Morgenthau reckoned that international politics was at root psychological in nature.6 1 The cherished Freud cigar quote seems to be apocryphal.
