The 24 GMX experiments, conducted at the Nevada Test Site (NTSJ between December 1954 and February 1956, were ‘equation-of-state” physics studies that used small chemical explosives and small quantities of plutonium. Several tests conducted during Operation Dominic involved missile launches from Johnston Atoll. Several of these missile launches were aborted, resulting in the destruction of the missile and nuclear device either on the pad or in the air. On August 5, 1963, the United States and the Soviet Union signed the Limited Test Ban Treaty which effectively banned testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere. -

FOREWORD The subject of peaceful uses of nuclear explosions hns been attracting increasing attention in view of i~s immense potentialities. The United States of America and the Soviet Union, which are among the countries most ad- vanced in the field of nuclear science and technology, have already conducted several experiments in this dire- ction and have several projects underway. The principai aim of the compilation of the present bibliography is to make available to the Indian scientists and engineers up-to-date information on the subject based upon all available literature. The bibliography comprises 685 references with in- formative abstracts. The main sources of information used for compiling it are .-Nuclear Science Abstracts, (NSA), primary journals and reports. Whenever USA is referred to, its volume and abstract numbers are given at the bottom of the abstract. In addition to the author and report number indexes, a list of major Plowshare events is also given. The compiler of this bibliography is Miss.ft.A.liagarathna of the IN IS Unit of the Library and Technical Information Section of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Although every effort has been cade to include all available pub- lished literature in this field till May 1970, omissions are inevitable. -

However, the limitations in transport capabilities were too severe to allow sufficient load on explosive material. The production was limited, 3200 V2 missiles were employed, but the final impact on the war development was negligible. Assembly site Mittelwerk The Mittelwerk V-2 factory in Nordhausen, Thuringia produced some 4,575 V-2s between August, 1944 and March, 1945—the period in which these rockets were headed for firing batterys (as opposed, earlier on, to development testing). The workers were primarily recruited from concentration camps which were constructed nearby the production facilities. Estimates of the total number of prisoners in the complex at range between 40,000 and 64,000. It is estimated that of the 60,000+ detainees employed in and around the Mittelbau complex over a 20-month period, 26,500 did not survive. Many were shot by SS commands with the advance of the US army towards Nordhausen in March 1945. The precursor of modern ballistic missiles was the German V-2, a single-stage, fin- stabilized missile propelled by liquid oxygen and ethyl alcohol to a maximum range of about 200 miles. -

That’s my dog Spot over there. Welcome to the not-so-wonderful world of nuclear weaponry. This book is a journey from 1945 when the first atomic bomb was detonated in the New Mexico desert to where we are today. It’s an interesting and sometimes bizarre journey. It can also be horribly frightening. Today, there are enough nuclear weapons to destroy the civilized world several times over. Over 23,000. “Enough to make the rubble bounce,” Winston Churchill said. The United States alone has over 10,000 warheads in what’s called the ‘enduring stockpile.’ In my time, we took care of things Mano-a-Mano. -
Davy Crockett Weapon System Would Soon Launch the Little Feller I Shot
Introduction The desert temperature hovered at 90 degrees Fahrenheit the morning of July 17, 1962 at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), now known at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Eventually the beating sun would increase the heat to over 105 degrees later that day, but at 10:00 a.m., a crowd of 396 spectators braved the scorching temperature and relentless sun to witness the last atmospheric test ever conducted by the United States. The crowd gathered in Area 18 of the NTS, approximately two miles from ground zero, where a Davy Crockett weapon system would soon launch the Little Feller I shot. Davy Crockett The Davy Crockett weapons system is mounted on a vehicle and prepared for launch. In 1962, Davy Crockett, hero of the Alamo, had been dead for 126 years. But on this hot summer morning, the name 'Davy Crockett' referred to the weapons system that fired projectiles from recoilless rifles with a firing range of 1.24 to 2.49 miles and could launch projectiles that weighed up to 79 pounds. Little Feller I, the fourth and last test of the Dominic II series (also known as Operation Sunbeam) conducted at the NTS, was a stockpile Davy Crockett tactical weapon with a nuclear warhead. Weighing only 51 pounds, Little Feller I was the smallest and lightest fission-type weapon deployed by the United States. The objectives of the test were threefold: 1. Fact Sheet Nevada Offsites This fact sheet provides information about the Nevada Offsites. These sites are managed by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management. Buesseler Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA 02543, USA (Received 27 June 1996; accepted 15 August 1996) ABSTRACT Plutonium analyses of a dated coral record from the French Frigate Shoals in the central North Pacific indicate that there are two major sources of PM in this basin: close-in (troposphertc) fallout from nuclear weapons testing at the Pact& Proving Grounds in the Marshall Islands in the 1950s and global (stratospheric) fallout which peaked in 1962. Furthermore, the 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio of fallout ,from the Pacific Proving Grounds is characteristically higher (0.24) than that of global jhllout Pu (O.l8+I9). Seawater and sediment samples from the North Pacific exhibit a wide range of “40Pu/239Pu values (0.19-+34), with a trend towards higher ratios in the subsurface waters and sediment. Deep water 240Pul”39Pu ratios are higher in the vicinity of the Marshall Islands relative to stations further from this close-in fallout source. These preli- minary data suggest that fallout Pu from the Pacific Proving Grounds is more rapidly removed from the surface waters than is global fallout Pu. Plutonium geochemistry appears to be related to the physical/chemical form of PM-bearing particles generated by dtfferent ,fallout sources. (‘ 1997 Elsevier Science Limited.
