Ritual Rebellion and Social Inversion in Alpine Austria: Rethinking the “Perchtenlauf” in its Relationship to the Carnivalesque by David Natko A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts Approved April 2014 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: John Alexander, Chair Daniel Gilfillan Peter Horwath ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2014 ABSTRACT The "Perchtenlauf," a multi-faceted procession of masked participants found in the eastern Alps, has been the subject of considerable discourse and often debate within European ethnology since the mid-19th century. While often viewed from a mythological perspective and characterized as a relic of pre-Christian cult practices, only recently have scholars begun to examine its connection with Carnival. Research of this kind calls for an in-depth analysis of the "Perchtenlauf" that is informed by Bakhtin's theory of the carnivalesque, an aesthetic of festive merriment and the release from social restrictions which is embodied by Carnival traditions. A carnivalesque reading of the "Perchtenlauf" reveals a tradition pregnant with playful ambivalence, celebrations of the lower body, and the inversion of social hierarchies. Past interpretations of the "Perchtenlauf" have often described its alleged supernatural function of driving away the harmful forces of winter, however its carnavalesque elements have definite social functions involving the enjoyment of certain liberties not sanctioned under other circumstances. Präambel Auf Grund der Schönwetterperiode sind die Wasserstände in der Natur bereits stark gesunken. Die letzten Gewitterniederschläge hat die Vegetation zur Gänze aufgebraucht. Durch die gerin- gen Niederschlagsmengen und den zusätzlich weit verbreiteten Wind sind die Oberböden auf Wiesen und im Wald stark ausgetrocknet. Die prognostizierte Schönwetterperiode für diese Wo- che führt zu einer weiteren Erhöhung der Entzündungsgefahr. Auch der Waldbrandindex der ZAMG verweist für die nächsten Tage auf eine erhöhte Waldbrandgefahr. Die Gefahr für Vegeta- tionsbrände ist daher pongauweit als hoch einzustufen. Eine Veränderung der Situation im Laufe der nächsten Tage ist nicht zu erwarten. From hut to hut The Glockner Trail Hohe Tauern National Park Circling the Grossglockner Hiking around Austria’s highest mountain in seven days The Glockner Trail offers hikers and nature lovers a unique experi- ence right in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. This great mountain trail around the Grossglockner massif takes hikers on a tour that passes between towering glaciers, high alpine peaks and pas- tures that have been cultivated by mountain farmers for centuries. The Grossglockner Trail tracks are clearly marked throughout, and hikers need neither cross glaciers nor climb difficult sections of rocks. Yet the hike should not be underestimated, as it does lead into high alpine territory with all of its inherent risks. Each day’s hike ends at a hut or inn, where hikers can find rest, food and accommodation. Alpine huts are equipped and maintained to provide for basic needs in terms of accommodation and food. As access is often difficult, it is essentially impossible to provide greater comfort, but this is not necessarily a bad thing, as it helps preserve the authentic character of these huts. Hikers can choose to end the Grossglockner Trail – or start it – at each of the sections. The hike can be started or ended at Uttendorf, Kals, Heiligenblut, Fusch and Kaprun, all located in the valleys of the national park. Kaprun has been chosen as the start point in this brochure due to the town’s easy accessibility. The circuit around the majestic Grossglockner massif takes hikers through the three Austrian states of Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol, which share a strong commitment to protecting the unique natural environment of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
