  • Research on Gong Baotian
Research on Gong Baotian These writings are to be respectfully read aloud on the 64th anniversary of Mr. Gong Baotian’s demise. Wuhun Magazine 2007.4 # 226 By Huang Zhicheng Translated and edited by Joseph Crandall At the end of the reign of Qing Daoguang, Dong Haichuan, the founder of the Bagua Quan system, taught his art to many closed-door students in Beijing. One of those students was Yin Fu, who inherited all of Dong’s teachings on Bagua Quan. When Yin Fu taught students, he also completely transmitted Master Dong’s style. Because people are different and because their abilities are many, therefore the students that became famous are also many, such as Ma Gui, Yang Junfeng, He Jinkui, Yin Yuzhang, Li Yongqing, Jin Liuhui, Cao Zhongsheng, Men Baozhen, Gong Baotian, etc. Later people commemorate the tremendous contributions that Grandmaster Yin Fu made to the art of Bagua Quan by calling his Bagua Quan “Yin Branch Bagua Quan.” And when Master Gong Baotian inherited this art, people called it “Yin Style Gong Branch Bagua Quan.” Afterwards, when Gong Baotian’s “top student”, Sun Ruwen, inherited this martial art, he called it “Qianzi Men”. Its full name is “Yin Style Gong Branch Qian Gua Bagua Quan (Inner Eight Trigrams – Qian Character School).” The author studied with Sun Ruwen for thirty years from June 1953 through February 1984 and deeply got these transmissions. He underwent innumerable hardships, progressing deeper into the art and doing investigative research. Finally we have a clear picture of the development and history of Yin Style Gong Branch Bagua Quan.

  • Tai Chi and Ass Kicking? Keanu Reeves Will Show Us How in Man of Tai Chi
SPORTS / RECREATION / COMBAT SPORTS Tai Chi and ass kicking? Keanu Reeves will show us how in Man of Tai Chi. January 5, 2012 4:45 PM MST Actor Keanu Reeves attends the Cinema Society with DeLeon Tequila and Moving Pictures Film & Television screening Of 'Henry's Crime' at Landmark's Sunshine Cinema on April 4, 2011 in New York City. As I reported on 12/9/2011 Keanu Reeves will direct Man of Tai Chi as hisaffectionate homage to classic kick-ass cinema. Now Universal Pictures is boarding Keanu Reeves' directorial debut Man of Tai Chi, which will be shot in China and co-financed by Village Roadshow Pictures Asia, China Film Group, Wanda Media and Universal. Set in contemporary Beijing, Man of Tai Chi will be the first time for Tiger Chen, who was an integral part of the Kung Fu team in The Matrix, to play a lead role. In Man of Tai Chi, Chen stars as a young martial artist whose fighting skills bring him opportunities and painful choices. After months long search, Hong Kong-based Karen Mok (a three-time Golden Melody Award - winning actress and singer- songwriter.) has been chosen as the female lead role in this movie and plays a police officer. As far as Reeves, rumor has it that he may play a villain. This movie will be shoot in Mandarin and English after the Chinese New Year celebration is over in February 2012. Universal International president David Kosse said in a recent press conference that the opportunity to involve in the Chinese film market, as well as to bring Chinese movies to audiences around the world, is a priority for the studio.

  • China, Film Coproduction and Soft Power Competition
China, Film Coproduction and Soft Power Competition Weiying Peng Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2015 Key Words China Coproduction Film coproduction Soft power Soft power competition i ABSTRACT This thesis is a study of China’s film internationalism and coproduction strategy. International coproduction has become a new area of industry debate in regard to China’s film industry. However, there has been limited scholarly attention, in both English and Chinese scholarship, paid to the activities of film coproduction between China and offshore parties. Specifically, the research looks at three representative film coproduction cases: Hong Kong and China based on Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA); US and China without any state-level agreements; Australia and China based on official film coproduction treaty. The broad intent of this study is to analyse the extent to which Chinese coproduction strategy functions as a form of soft power competition. Film coproduction in China, through the transfer of human capital, technology and knowledge, has significant implications for promoting China’s film ‘going out’, thus improving China’s soft power and building a better international image. The aim is to investigate the evolution of coproduction in the film industry, the process of coproduction, the foreign film companies’ strategies of adjustment to China’s state policy, and the challenges that hinder the coproduction. The contribution of this study comes in two parts: first, understanding the current environment for film coproduction in China and how foreign partners, especially those from western countries, deal with the historical, cultural, institutional and linguistic differences for coproduction.

Tai Chi Chuan& Oriental Arts No 36 Winter 2011 £3.50 Andrea Falk interview Essential Taijiquan Tao of Health Consider the Classics www.taichiunion.com WinterMastering 2011 Taijiquan1 an interview with bagua master Andrea Falkby Luigi Zanini Sifu Falk, you have a vast background in Chinese Traditional and Modern martial arts. Could you briefly present your different experiences and your teachers, specifically in Baguazhang? I started in Shaolin in 1972 in Victoria, then Myjong Lawhorn with Alex Kwok, in Vancouver. I then moved to the Beijing Sports University in 1980, where I trained mostly with Xia Bohua. Up until I'd trained about 2/3 sparring 1/3 forms, and showed up in Beijing with sparring equipment. I had no clue, but Xia Bohua was in charge of establishing full contact sparring for the first time since the Cultural Revolution. In the end, they wouldn't let me spar, fearing to hurt the first foreigner to train at the university. I did the entire wushu syllabus, but although I could kick, I was never a jumper, so didn't really have the potential to master the competition wushu. By my second year I decided to major in the internal styles, which was hard for me at first, but I came to love them, especially baguazhang and Chen taijiquan. I did Cheng style bagua there with Xia Bohua, a mix of modern and traditional. I have the university to thank for turning me into a professional. All my teachers at the university practised their own traditional style, although they could also teach the modern curriculum, so most of my training Andrea Falk, a native of Canada began her content has actually been pretty traditional.
