Abstract Jeffrey Lee Takacs AH Heroes Think Alike: Kinship and Ritual in Baguazhang (Under the direction of Dr. Robert Daniels) This ethnography investigates the transmission of a particular Chinese martial arts tradition, Baguazhang, as it is practiced in Taiwan. Using the theoretical approaches of systems theory and British social anthropology it examines several aspects of the transmission of this tradition. First the teaching methodology and goals of a contemporary instructor are detailed. Second, the architectural landscape of this instructor’s martial arts society is investigated. Third, the history of teacher-student relationships in this tradition is outlined. Fourth, several common representations of the origin of Baguazhang are detailed and analyzed. Fifth, the method by which this society is organized is detailed and compared to other types of Chinese social organizations. As a result, a new conceptual term in the study of Chinese kinship, the “aggregated lineage”, is presented. Like the traditional Chinese lineage, the “aggregated lineage” is organized following the Confucian patrilineal principle, but differs in two ways. First, in the “aggregated lineage”, the patriline is not one of biological descent, but one of ideology: one’s teacher is one’s father. Second, the “aggregated lineage” recruits its members not through childbirth, but through initiation into discipleship. iii Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.     129 Christianity and the Taiwanese religious landscape Benoit Vermander HRISTIANS IN TAlWAN ACCOUNT FOR LESS than 5 per cent of the C population. The same is true of Mainland China. However, in Taiwan as in the Mainland, the cultural influence of Christianity goes far beyond the limits of the institutional churches. The appeal of Christian values and concepts goes with westernization, and this also explains the difficulties encountered when trying to inculturate the Gospel. Liturgy, theological thinking and spiritual methods still directly derive from the westem mould. Christianity as a whole somehow contributes to shape modern Chinese culture, but Chinese culture is still hardly relevant for defining the specificity and the future of the Chinese Christian churches. However, some Christians are now conscious that their faith will become a living reality in today's China only if Christian communities interact with other cultural and religious communities, learning to appreciate their experience and concerns while sharing with them what makes the core of their life. For Christianity, increased exchanges are the road towards spiritual renewal as well as towards social relevance. In the Chinese world, the tiny numbers make the Christians always at risk of becoming mere marginals. When they dare to situate their faith within the wealth of spiritual experiences encountered in the Chinese context, these 'marginals' may indeed fulfil a prophetic mission. What is the religious landscape in which Chinese Christians have first to situate themselves? I intend to concentrate here on religions in Taiwan today. Although the political and social situation in Taiwan is altogether very different from the one encountered in Mainland China, both countries' religious contexts present more similarities than seems to be the case at first glance.

This project seeks to evaluate what the different meanings of martial arts changed over the Qing period and how different people employed these understandings at different times and in different circumstances. By placing martial arts as the focal point of analysis, something rarely seen in academic scholarship, this project highlights how there the definition of martial arts has always been in flux and it is precisely that lack of definition that has made it useful. This project begins by focusing on establishing a historical overview of the circumstances during the Qing period within which martial arts developed. It also analyzes and defines both the important analytical and local terminology used in relation to discourse surrounding the martial arts. Chapter 1 looks at official documents and analyzes how the Qing court understood martial arts as a means of creating a political narrative and how the form of that narrative changed during the Qing, depending on the situations that required court intervention. Chapter 2 will analyze how Han martial artists employed their martial arts as a means of developing or preserving a sense of ethnic strength.

After several generations of unremitting efforts, Chinese Wushu has gained a very high reputation in the world. Among them, Taijiquan has an unparalleled influence, according to a survey released in 2007 by the National Center for Supplementary and Alternative Medicine, affiliated to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). According to the report, about 3 million people in the United States engage in Taijiquan, while in 2015 the number of Taijiquan practitioners worldwide reached 300 million. It can be said that Taijiquan is a business card of traditional Wushu. However, in recent years, several confrontations between Taijiquan and modern fighting have all ended in failure, which makes people think that the concept of Taijiquan has lagged behind the times. Therefore, we need a platform to rebuild people's confidence in Taijiquan boxing, and also to avoid the development of Taijiquan blindly emphasizing traditional culture and health preservation. After fighting, we should know that the soul of Wushu is fighting. Once Taijiquan leaves fighting, it is a water without source and a wood without foundation. Comprehensive Combat (MMA) is the hottest type of combat at present. It follows the idea of Western pragmatism and the rule of open and inclusive, and its skill is undoubtedly high. If Taijiquan can participate in it, it can prove its fighting ability through the stage of comprehensive fighting first.

Man is born between and heaven and hearth, and possesses the natures of both Yin and Yang. His original qi is united and undifferentiated. However, man becomes confused by desires and this gives rise to impure qi and the clumsy use of strength. On top of this, if one does not know how to cultivate the self internally while nourishing the self externally, the result will be that the yin and yang will not be balanced, and the internal and external will be divided. When yang reaches its limit, yin is born. At the extreme of yin, exhaustion is the inevitable result. At this point, nothing can be done for the person.2 The ultimate method of cultivation is called “the way of inverse movement.” This method turns Qian and Kun,3 revolving the qi until the post-heaven functions return to the pre-heaven state.4 Impure qi and clumsy strength 1 “Wu Ji” is the state of undifferentiated chaos before creation.
