This is the first official meeting of ESA after its foundation as the ESSKA section focused on shoulder surgery. The meeting will be focused on the management of failures of surgical treatment of different pathological conditions around the shoulder, such as: instability of the glenohumeral joint and of the acromio-clavicular joint, rotator cuff disease and pathology of the long head of the biceps tendon, and glenohumeral osteoarthritis. Particularly, a special focus will be on failure of shoulder arthroplasty. Current status of management of failures of shoulder surgical procedures will be presented by leading ESA shoulder expert together with selected non-ESA experts. The meeting has set a format for a “consensus meeting”, with peer- reviewed invited lectures and panel discussions on challenging cases. Interaction with the audience will be possible during the sessions by using a voting system. The meeting represents a great opportunity to make a point on some controversial topics about shoulder and might be a valid update for orthopedic surgeons and also extends to other medical and health practitioners, such as: sports medicine doctors, physical medicine doctors, and physical therapists. ESA stands for “Excellence in Shoulder Treatment” and this will be demonstrated very successfully with this type of meeting. The Eternal City will be a perfect location for this first ESA Meeting. Rome is one of world’s most photogenic cities - not surprising when you remember what’s here -The Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, St Peter’s Square, Spanish Steps, Colosseum. Rome is a romantic place, where modern and old, past and present go side by side, all the time. It will surprise you, like a beautiful middle aged woman that has still plenty to offer and whose beauty is just been merely blurred by time passing by. It’s near the city’s most popular street, Via Veneto, and the spectacular Villa Borghese park. The steep slopes of the mountains have been deforested–several times in many cases–with consequent erosion; frane or avalanches remove large tracts of regolith, and doubly obliterate the archaeological record. In the valley-bottoms active streams have deposited and eroded successive layers of fill, sealing and destroying the evidence of settlement in many relatively favored niches. The more extensive lowlands have also seen substantial depositions of alluvial and colluvial material; the coasts have been exposed to erosion, aggradation and occasional tectonic deformation, or–spectacularly in the Bay of Naples– alternating collapse and re-elevation (“bradyseism”) at a staggeringly rapid pace. Earthquakes everywhere have accelerated the rate of change; vulcanicity in Campania has several times transformed substantial tracts of landscape beyond recognition–and reconstruction (thus no attempt is made here to re-create the contours of any of the sometimes very different forerunners of today’s Mt. Vesuvius). To this instability must be added the effect of intensive and continuous intervention by humanity. Episodes of depopulation in the Italian peninsula have arguably been neither prolonged nor pronounced within the timespan of the map and beyond. UK 1 Introduction French lawyer Bergier published the first work on Roman roads in 162210 having discovered the remains of Roman roads near Rheims. He was so taken with his finds that he began to investigate classical literature and monuments. Bergier's work influenced 17th and 18th century French roadbuilding which in turn influenced British roadbuilders Metcalf, MacAdam and Telford who adopted a scientific approach in developing road construction techniques in the 19th century which are essentially unchanged today. For this reason, an understanding of Roman road engineering is crucial in understanding how present day UK road construction technology evolved. The introduction of flexibly bedded pavers as a road surfacing material during the second half of the 20th century coupled with the rediscovery of Roman roadbuilding during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries has brought us to a point where it is more important than ever to look back at how, where, why and by whom Romans roads were built. 17 2 The Peoples ofItaly Roman roads comprised a crucial part of the development of Roman civilisation and it may be no exaggeration to state that the Roman Empire comprised a network of roads unifYing many disparate cultures from Newcastle to North Africa, from Portugal to Arabia. Loja, 85050 Potenza, Italy * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +39-0971-427326 Received: 16 July 2019; Accepted: 10 September 2019; Published: 12 September 2019 Abstract: This work introduces the results of a geoarchaeological study about a large segment of a Roman road (i.e., Via Herculia, III and the beginning of IV century A.D.), which crossed the Lucanian segment of the southern Apennines (Italy). Classical approach of the archaeological research based on the analysis of bibliographic, archival, literary, archaeological, and historical sources allowed us to infer the Roman road path, which is quite different from previous hypotheses. Geoarchaeological analysis is based on the detailed mapping of lithological and geomorphological features of the study area and has been primarily focused on a well-known segment of the Roman road from Filiano to the southern mountains of the Potenza city (Sasso di Castalda). Our results suggest that the choice of the road path has been driven by the outcrop of some deposits and the presence of specific geomorphological landforms, such as low-relief areas in mountain landscape. Then, the same approach was applied to a sector with controversial archaeological evidences (i.e., the Upper Agri river valley), where geological and geomorphological analyses support archaeological research in the reconstruction of the ancient path. This integrated approach can help archaeology to understand and then discover ancient road paths crossing complex and impervious landscapes such as the intramontane lands.
