GRANHOLM GENEALOGY EARLY MYTHOLOGY ANCESTRY 1 INTRODUCTION This book covers the earliest history of man and the mythology in some countries. The beginning from Adam and Eve and their descendants is from the Old Testament, but also by several authors and genealogy programs. The age of the persons in the lineages in Genesis is expressed in their “years”, which has little to do with the reality of our 365-day years. I have chosen one such program as a starting point for this book. Several others have been used, and as can be expected, there are a lot of conflicting information, from which I have had to choose as best I can. It is fairly well laid out so the specific information is suitable for print. In addition, the lineage information shown covers the biblical information, fairly close to the Genesis, and it also leads to both to mythical and historical persons in several countries. Where myth turns into history is up to the reader’s imagination. This book lists individuals from Adam and Eve to King Alfred the Great of England. Between these are some mythical figures on which the Greek (similar to Roman) mythology is based beginning with Zeus and the Nordic (Anglo-Saxon) mythology beginning with Odin (Woden). These persons, in their national mythologies, have different ancestors than the biblical ones. More about the Nordic mythology is covered in the “Swedish Royal Ancestry, Book 1”. Of additional interest is the similarity of the initial creation between the Greek and the Finnish mythology in its national Kalevala epos, from which a couple of samples are included here. -

AP LATIN SUMMER ASSIGNMENT: Cardinal Gibbons High School Magistra Crabbe: 2018/2019 Assignment: Read and prepare for a test on Books I, II, IV, VI, VIII, and XII of Virgil’s Aeneid. Livy on the Founding of Rome Section on the Founding of Rome From Livy's History of Rome (1904), translated by John Henry Freese, Alfred John Church, and William Jackson Brodribb Founding of Rome Sections of Livy Book I Aeneas Leaves Troy To begin with, it is generally admitted that, after the taking of Troy, while all the other Trojans were treated with severity, in the case of two, Aeneas and Antenor, the Greeks forbore to exercise the full rights of war, both on account of an ancient tie of hospitality, and because they had persistently recommended peace and the restoration of Helen: and then Antenor, after various vicissitudes, reached the inmost bay of the Adriatic Sea, accompanied by a body of the Eneti, who had been driven from Paphlagonia by civil disturbance, and were in search both of a place of settlement and a leader, their chief Pylamenes having perished at Troy; and that the Eneti and Trojans, having driven out the Euganei, who dwelt between the sea and the Alps, occupied these districts. In fact, the place where they first landed is called Troy, and from this it is named the Trojan canton. The nation as a whole is called Veneti. It is also agreed that Aeneas, an exile from home owing to a like misfortune, but conducted by the fates to the founding of a greater empire, came first to Macedonia, that he was then driven ashore at Sicily in his quest for a settlement, and sailing thence directed his course to the territory of Laurentum. This spot also bears the name of Troy. -

Livy: The Horatii & Curiatii 1 Introduction to Livy Livy’s history begins with the earliest foundations of Rome and ends Titus Livius, known to us today as Livy, was born in 59 BC in with the death of Drusus in 9 BC. Northern Italy in the town of Patavium (modern day Padua) and died in AD 17. Athough we know little of Livy’s own life, Seneca (4 BC – Although we do not know the particularities about Livy’s AD 65), a Roman writer and philosopher, tells us that he studied education and exactly when he came to Rome, it is likely that the the philosophy and other traditional subjects. Unlike many educated majority of his education took place in Patavium. Due to the civil Romans, we have no record of Livy aiming at a political career wars ravaging Rome and all of Italy, it would have been unsafe to because no records exist of his holding any public office. Much of travel through Italy and subsequently to expose a young boy to the Livy’s life was devoted to writing his history of Rome, Ab Urbe upheaval that was occurring in Rome. Thus Livy probably arrived to Condita. However, it is important to note that many significant and Rome, either to finish his studies under a rhetor, or simply to utilize influential events occurred during Livy’s lifetime: the Civil War the more extensive libraries available there in order to find sources for between Caesar and Pompey and the subsequent battles that led to the his history. At that time, Livy would have come to a more peaceful downfall of the Republic and the establishment of the Empire with the Rome, rejuvenated by the end of years of civil strife, the victory of reign of Augustus. -

Divine Genealogies: A Sourcebook for Greek and Roman Mythology E. Edward Garvin, Editor ©2015 What follows is a collection of excerpts from Greek literary sources in translation. The intent is to give students an overview of Greek mythology as expressed by the Greeks themselves. But any such collection is inherently flawed: the process of selection and abridgement produces a falsehood because both the narrative and meta-narrative are destroyed when the continuity of the composition is interrupted. Nevertheless, this seems the most expedient way to expose students to a wide range of primary source information. I have tried to keep my voice out of it as much as possible and will intervene as editor (in this Times New Roman font) only to give background or exegesis to the text. All of the texts in Goudy Old Style are excerpts from Greek or Latin texts (primary sources) that have been translated into English. Ancient Texts In the field of Classics, we refer to texts by Author, name of the book, book number, chapter number and line number.1 Every text, regardless of language, uses the same numbering system. Homer’s Iliad, for example, is divided into 24 books and the lines in each book are numbered. Hesiod’s Theogony is much shorter so no book divisions are necessary but the lines are numbered. Below is an example from Homer’s Iliad, Book One, showing the English translation on the left and the Greek original on the right. When citing this text we might say that Achilles is first mentioned by Homer in Iliad 1.7 (i.7 is also acceptable). -

When Schliemann, as recently as seventy years ago, startled the world by un• covering the actual ruins both of Troy and of the palace of the kings of Mycenae, scholars and historians everywhere were faced with the possibility that the -sequel to the destruction of Troy, the wanderings and achievements of Aeneas, might likewise be founded on fact. The legend, as developed in the following pages, will show the early life of Aeneas prior to his supposed depar• ture from the Troad.. 'His wanderings will be traced to Italy and his connection with.Rome will be indicated, from whence sprang the belief that the Romans were the sons of Aeneas. 1 , Various opinions concerning the founding of Rome will not be mentioned.
