This edition comprises of numerous pioneering and informative articles from around the world which investigate important areas in medical education and clinical practice. The opening article by Ballance, Lim and Absar uses the case of a 61-year-old patient with a slow-growing scalp lesion to highlight the importance of an accurate diagnosis in formulating an effective management plan. Following this article, Lim and colleagues compare Povidone-Iodine dressing with dry dressing in order to ascertain various rates of infection and differences in wound healing. They endeavour to discover if the rates of infection and the healing of wounds differ according to the type of dressing applied. In their article, Panchu, Bahuleyan, Seethalakshmi and Thomas offer an insight into the way in which a learner's metacognitive awareness of reading strategies can impact academic achievement. They conclude that incorporating reading strategies into the medical curriculum will aid academic success. In the fourth article of this edition, Sailesh and colleagues examine the effect of using patients as opposed to actors to facilitate the teaching of communication skills to medical students. In an attempt to understand if one method is more effective than the other, they analyse the results of the end-of-stage OSCEs of third year medical students. Aamer, Merrony and Atkins conduct a survey on a cohort of Foundation Year 1 Doctors in order to gain an insight into their attitudes towards psychiatry as a future speciality and career choice. Lewis, Fitzmaurice, Fairclough and Guha realise that there is a decline in bedside teaching for medical students. Thus, they aim to facilitate a programme of bedside teaching via an online sign-up system. This would encourage medical students in their third and fourth years to be taught by junior doctors within a hospital setting. The final article by Udgiri and colleagues investigates the awareness of breast self-examination amongst female nursing students. Moreover, it strives to understand the impact of education on breast self-examination. In addition to the aforementioned articles, this edition of the WJMER includes the abstracts from the 6th International and Academic Research Conference which was held at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. These abstracts broach a variety of interesting topics and highlight the ground-breaking research currently being conducted by medical students and junior doctors throughout the world. We sincerely hope that you find each article in this edition enlightening, thought-provoking and enjoyable to read.
