Dear Customer, Welcome to our bumper November catalogue, crammed full of the usual superb new releases and special offers we tend to see around this time of year. We have had to squeeze quite a lot into our 60 page limit this time (at the expense of a few pictures), but we hope you enjoy delving deep into the catalogues of some wonderful record labels. Our personal new release highlights this month include the completion of Naxos’s Ring Cycle from Hong Kong with the release of Gotterdammerung (plus all four operas immediately available in a single boxset); a brand new all-Vivaldi album from Cecilia Bartoli, beautifully accompanied by the Ensemble Matheus (Decca); two discs of Elgar in the shape of The Music Makers/Spirit of England from the BBC Symphony Orchestra/Sir Andrew Davis (Chandos - see below) and The Wand of Youth Suites from the Halle/Sir Mark Elder (Halle) - both sure to be very fine recordings; Monteverdi’s ‘Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria’ from Sir John Eliot Gardiner in SDG’s usual lavish book-style presentation; enlightening Mahler from MusicAeterna under Teodor Currentzis on Sony; Beethoven and Chopin from this year’s Leeds International Piano Competition winner, Eric Lu (Warner Classics); and a further excellent instalment of Haydn Quartets from the London Haydn Quartet on Hyperion. And that just scratches the surface… We must also point out the new limited edition Bach 333 Complete Boxset from Decca/DG (see back page), available at a special price until Christmas. Containing 222 CDs, it’s certainly a mammoth set, but initial orders through our website have been coming thick and fast, so we would urge you not to hang around if interested! Other, slightly smaller-scale boxsets worthy of a mention include the ‘Rossini Edition’ from Warner Classics (marking the 150th anniversary of his death this November), Rene Jacobs’s recordings of Mozart’s Da Ponte Operas compiled into a single box, a re-package of Sir Colin Davis’s complete Berlioz recordings for LSO Live, and an anthology of Celibidache’s legendary years with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Naxos, Chandos, Pentatone, Australian Eloquence, Onyx and King’s College Cambridge all now have their complete catalogues reduced, plus we have DVDs and Blu-rays from Opus Arte, boxsets from Decca/DG, and three selections from the Warner/Erato catalogue: budget titles, a list of 100 full-price titles, and around 50 DVDs and Blu-rays. Best regards from, The Europadisc Team DISC OF THE MONTH Elgar The Music Makers, The Spirit of England £10.36 Dame Sarah Connnolly, Andrew Staples, BBC Symphony Chorus and or pay just Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis £8.95 Chandos CHSA 5215 if your order value Distinguished British music interpreter Sir Andrew Davis joins forces with the BBC exceeds £50* Symphony Orchestra once again, this time with acclaimed soloists Dame Sarah * to qualify for the special price, Connolly and Andrew Staples, in this thoughtful presentation of the last two your order value must exceed a total of £50 excluding this substantial choral works of Sir Edward Elgar. recording and before any applicable carriage charges. The maturity of Elgar as an orchestrator is obvious in both works on this disc, Offer available while stocks last. notably, in The Music Makers (1912), during passages in which he quotes from Sea Pictures and the Violin Concerto, and in representing the sound of aircraft in The Spirit of England (1917). Elgar uses self-quotation to reflect: The Music Makers is a canvas of self-reflection, written quickly following a period of illness. The orchestral introduction is introspective, melancholic and noble, before the words of Arthur O’Shaughnessy’s poem and much self-quotation within the music offer an insight into the sense of nostalgia and awareness of the loneliness of the creative artist felt by the composer. The Spirit of England reflects on the sadness and desolation of war felt by a nation, with the inclusion of quotations from The Dream of Gerontius in some of the more negative stanzas that Elgar found harder to set. Specified in the score for tenor or soprano, all three movements are sung here by a tenor in a recording first. 2 Naxos All Music Titles Now Reduced Until 25 January 2019, we are offering 25% discount on all music recordings from Naxos. As you will no doubt be aware, Naxos split their catalogue into two price points (premium and classic) about two years ago, meaning that it is now slightly more difficult to tell you exactly how this discount works out for every title. Below are details of what 25% discount means to some of their common price points, but please feel free to confirm the cost of specific titles with us by phone or email. Please be aware that most titles are now at the premium level. 1CD premium £8.50 £6.38 | 1CD classic £6.95 £5.21 2CD set premium £15.95 £11.96 | 2CD set classic £11.95 £8.96 3CD set premium £20.95 £15.71 | 3CD set classic £14.25 £10.69 Unfortunately, the Audiobooks series cannot be included in the offer on this occasion. • Debussy's Pelléas Et Mélisande
Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore Pelléas et Mélisande is a strange, haunting work, typical of the Symbolist movement in that it hints at truths, desires and aspirations just out of reach, yet allied to a longing for transcendence is a tragic, self-destructive element whereby everybody suffers and comes to grief or, as in the case of the lovers, even dies - yet frequent references to fate and Arkel’s ascribing that doleful outcome to ineluctable destiny, rather than human weakness or failing, suggest that they are drawn, powerless, to destruction like moths to the flame. The central enigma of Mélisande’s origin and identity is never revealed; that riddle is reflected in the wispy, amorphous property of the music itself, just as the text, adapted from Maeterlinck’s play, is vague and allusive, rarely open or direct in its expression of the characters’ velleities. The opera was highly innovative and controversial, a gateway to a new style of modern music which discarded and re-invented operatic conventions in a manner which is still arresting and, for some, still unapproachable. It is a work full of light and shade, sunlit clearings in gloomy forest, foetid dungeons and sea-breezes skimming the battlements, sparkling fountains, sunsets and brooding storms - all vividly depicted in the score. Any francophone Francophile will delight in the nuances of the parlando text. There is no ensemble or choral element beyond the brief sailors’ “Hoé! Hisse hoé!” offstage and only once do voices briefly intertwine, at the climax of the lovers' final duet.

A large body of published research exists regarding the physiology of breathing, the acoustics of singing, and solutions for specific vocal faults. There is similarly a growing body of research into the system of voice classification and repertoire assignment. This paper shall reexamine this research in light of baritenor voices. After establishing the general parameters of healthy vocal technique through appoggio, the various tenor, baritone, and bass Fächer will be studied to establish norms of vocal criteria such as range, timbre, tessitura, and registration for each Fach. The study of these Fächer includes examinations of the historical singers for whom the repertoire was created and how those roles are cast by opera companies in modern times. The specific examination of baritenors follows the same format by examining current and

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Transcending Imagination; Or, An Approach to Music and Symbolism during the Russian Silver Age A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology by Ryan Isao Rowen 2015 © Copyright by Ryan Isao Rowen 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Transcending Imagination; Or, An Approach to Music and Symbolism during the Russian Silver Age by Ryan Isao Rowen Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Mitchell Bryan Morris, Chair The Silver Age has long been considered one of the most vibrant artistic movements in Russian history. Due to sweeping changes that were occurring across Russia, culminating in the 1917 Revolution, the apocalyptic sentiments of the general populace caused many intellectuals and artists to turn towards esotericism and occult thought. With this, there was an increased interest in transcendentalism, and art was becoming much more abstract. The tenets of the Russian Symbolist movement epitomized this trend. Poets and philosophers, such as Vladimir Solovyov, Andrei Bely, and Vyacheslav Ivanov, theorized about the spiritual aspects of words and music. It was music, however, that was singled out as possessing transcendental properties. In recent decades, there has been a surge in scholarly work devoted to the transcendent strain in Russian Symbolism. The end of the Cold War has brought renewed interest in trying to understand such an enigmatic period in Russian culture. While much scholarship has been ii devoted to Symbolist poetry, there has been surprisingly very little work devoted to understanding how the soundscape of music works within the sphere of Symbolism.

  • August 2016 List
August 2016 Catalogue Prices valid until Wednesday 28 September 2016 unless stated otherwise 0115 982 7500 [email protected] 1 Welcome! Dear Customer, The ‘Shakespeare 400’ celebrations have been in full swing for a few months now, with performances and special events happening around the UK and beyond. Here at Europadisc, we have seen an uplift of interest in the DVD/Blu- ray versions of his plays recorded at the RSC and The Globe Theatre (issued by Opus Arte), and there have been a noticeable number of Shakespeare-themed recitals on CD featuring items such musical settings of the sonnets. Although our focus is primarily on classical music, we have agreed to feature a new CD set issued by Decca this month containing the complete plays, sonnets and poems of Shakespeare recorded by The Marlowe Dramatic Society back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, originally released on Argo Records. It is a beautifully presented boxset containing 100 CDs alongside a 200pp booklet crammed with fascinating notes and historical information. Much more information can be found on p.4 - highly recommended! Other boxsets featured this month include the Complete Remastered Stereo Collection of recordings from Jascha Heifetz on Sony (RCA), the Complete Decca Recordings of pianist Julius Katchen and some bargain re-issues of wonderful recordings from EMI, Virgin, Warner and Erato in Warner Classics’ Budget Boxset range. Of course, we mustn’t forget the many interesting new recordings being released: highlights include the next discs in both the Classical Piano Concerto (FX Mozart/Clementi) and the Romantic Violin Concerto (Stojowski/Wieniawski) series on Hyperion (p.5); four brand new titles from Dutton Epoch (see opposite); the already well-reviewed final instalment in Osmo Vänskä’s latest Sibelius cycle on BIS (Disc of the Month - see below); and a brilliant performance of works by Telemann from Florilegium (p.8).
