Dear Customer, Welcome to our bumper November catalogue, crammed full of the usual superb new releases and special offers we tend to see around this time of year. We have had to squeeze quite a lot into our 60 page limit this time (at the expense of a few pictures), but we hope you enjoy delving deep into the catalogues of some wonderful record labels. Our personal new release highlights this month include the completion of Naxos’s Ring Cycle from Hong Kong with the release of Gotterdammerung (plus all four operas immediately available in a single boxset); a brand new all-Vivaldi album from Cecilia Bartoli, beautifully accompanied by the Ensemble Matheus (Decca); two discs of Elgar in the shape of The Music Makers/Spirit of England from the BBC Symphony Orchestra/Sir Andrew Davis (Chandos - see below) and The Wand of Youth Suites from the Halle/Sir Mark Elder (Halle) - both sure to be very fine recordings; Monteverdi’s ‘Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria’ from Sir John Eliot Gardiner in SDG’s usual lavish book-style presentation; enlightening Mahler from MusicAeterna under Teodor Currentzis on Sony; Beethoven and Chopin from this year’s Leeds International Piano Competition winner, Eric Lu (Warner Classics); and a further excellent instalment of Haydn Quartets from the London Haydn Quartet on Hyperion. And that just scratches the surface… We must also point out the new limited edition Bach 333 Complete Boxset from Decca/DG (see back page), available at a special price until Christmas. Containing 222 CDs, it’s certainly a mammoth set, but initial orders through our website have been coming thick and fast, so we would urge you not to hang around if interested! Other, slightly smaller-scale boxsets worthy of a mention include the ‘Rossini Edition’ from Warner Classics (marking the 150th anniversary of his death this November), Rene Jacobs’s recordings of Mozart’s Da Ponte Operas compiled into a single box, a re-package of Sir Colin Davis’s complete Berlioz recordings for LSO Live, and an anthology of Celibidache’s legendary years with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Naxos, Chandos, Pentatone, Australian Eloquence, Onyx and King’s College Cambridge all now have their complete catalogues reduced, plus we have DVDs and Blu-rays from Opus Arte, boxsets from Decca/DG, and three selections from the Warner/Erato catalogue: budget titles, a list of 100 full-price titles, and around 50 DVDs and Blu-rays. The maturity of Elgar as an orchestrator is obvious in both works on this disc, Offer available while stocks last. notably, in The Music Makers (1912), during passages in which he quotes from Sea Pictures and the Violin Concerto, and in representing the sound of aircraft in The Spirit of England (1917). Elgar uses self-quotation to reflect: The Music Makers is a canvas of self-reflection, written quickly following a period of illness. The orchestral introduction is introspective, melancholic and noble, before the words of Arthur O’Shaughnessy’s poem and much self-quotation within the music offer an insight into the sense of nostalgia and awareness of the loneliness of the creative artist felt by the composer. The Spirit of England reflects on the sadness and desolation of war felt by a nation, with the inclusion of quotations from The Dream of Gerontius in some of the more negative stanzas that Elgar found harder to set. Specified in the score for tenor or soprano, all three movements are sung here by a tenor in a recording first. 2 Naxos All Music Titles Now Reduced Until 25 January 2019, we are offering 25% discount on all music recordings from Naxos. As you will no doubt be aware, Naxos split their catalogue into two price points (premium and classic) about two years ago, meaning that it is now slightly more difficult to tell you exactly how this discount works out for every title. Below are details of what 25% discount means to some of their common price points, but please feel free to confirm the cost of specific titles with us by phone or email.
