Sorry about that. Maybe this month?! British summer, much like the game of golf, is predictable only in its unpredictability! However, July gives us a marker as the halfway point of the year (can you believe it?), and in the church we settle into a pattern of worship and reflection on God’s creation and all that surrounds us. We hear much about our responsibilities as the human race in terms of the environment, and rightly so, and it is therefore no bad thing that we dwell for a while on what that might mean for you and for me. This is the Green season in the church. If you pop in to any of our churches you should see that the altar is ‘dressed’ in a green frontal to add focus to this notion of God as our creator and the one who gives us ‘dominion’ over all we can see. It is a great privilege and a huge responsibility. During June Julie and I had a week away in Italy. We stayed in a small town in Tuscany which had an interesting history. Where the main town now sits was once a vast area of marshland, and high on a hill which overlooks the modern town sits the original settlement called Montecatini Alto. It is accessible mainly via a funicular railway which is always fun! The thing about going up the hill on that railway is that when you reach the top you have the most incredible panorama that spreads before you. Hills, plains, houses and trees all in a vast blanket of colour and diversity, and as it was a particularly clear day when we made the trip, it went on for miles. I am always in wonder when I see a view like that, and it reminds me of how incredible our world really is. In the creation story Adam and Eve are reminded of their responsibilities, and while the story tells us that they quickly renege on their instructions, they are after all only human, nevertheless we still have those words of promise and privilege ringing in our ears when we consider the part we play in our planet. And that too will be reflected in our worship as we work through the summer months. While we go ‘Green’ in general, July is a busy month with much going on, and you will find various details of activities elsewhere in the Magazine and in our weekly church bulletins. In Chew Magna the Friends of St Andrews have their AGM, Stanton Drew has their Flower Show, Norton Malreward has a Cream Tea, Chew Magna has a Safari Supper, and we have a number of weddings and no less than 3 baptisms to enjoy before the end of the month. So enjoy the summer and all that it brings. We wish our school exam sitters the very best in their results, and if you are taking a break, have a wonderful time. Yours in Christ, Charles Roberts Tower Open Days This year the tower will be open on the following Sunday afternoons, 2 – 4pm: 7 July, 4 August and 1 September Prices - Adults £2; Children (8 –16) £1 Health & Safety Due to the steep narrow access to the Tower, the following points should be observed – • Only children aged between 8 and 16 are allowed up the Tower, and they must be accompanied by a responsible adult; • No children under the age of 8, this also includes babies in slings; • No high heels or flip flops; • No rucksacks, large shoulder or hand bags; • It can be windy and cold at the top so you are advised to wear a jumper/coat; • Only 6 people allowed at the top of the tower at any one time, plus 2 volunteers. The Filling Station An exciting new way to worship Thursday 25 July 2019 at 7.30pm Speaker: Patrick Whitworth The Pelly Barn, Chew Magna The Lakeside Group of Churches Time to Reflect By the time you read this I may be a Granny! Our first grandchild is due on 30 June. Very exciting! So our holiday this month will be up in Scotland, cooing over a new- born. Let’s hope he or she looks more like their parents than their grandparents. I remember when our eldest son was born that he received a little T-shirt that said ‘If you think I’m cute you should see my dad’. No prizes for guessing who gave it to him! I wonder who people see when they look at you. I’m not speaking of the familial physiological likeness but rather whether you reflect something of the nature and character of your heavenly Father. Can people look at you and recognise you as part of the Christian family? It’s easy for us to point the finger at others and say they are hypocrites or fail to live up to the high standards of Christian faith. I have to own that as I write this, following President Trump’s visit, that I find some of his views far from the Christian ones I espouse. If I allow myself I can get quite heated about the different ways in which people make Christian claims. ‘Living the story of God’s love’ shouldn’t be about taking pot shots at others but rather seeking to become more like Christ ourselves. We all fail at that. I’ve been doing some reassessment of my life as I realise a new generation is entering our family. It makes you think about what really matters and how you apportion your time. May I encourage you during July, traditionally a holiday month, as you come to the end of school and college programmes, put down the tools of your trade, to take time to reflect on your life. Think about the next phase or chapter and how you might allow God’s graces to shape you to become more like Him. What needs to change? How will you make space for that? Are you ready to wear the T-shirt? Wishing you God’s blessings! The Rt Revd Ruth Worsley Bishop of Taunton Please note that the Deanery Celebration - Telling our Story - due to be held on Sunday 14 July in Saltford has been cancelled. Pew Auction Success The pew auction in May proved a resounding success! The evening began with many people viewing the pews whilst enjoying a delicious and plentiful buffet. At 7.30 sharp local auctioneer, Richard Nancekivell from David James & Partners, started the bidding for the first of the 15 pews. (The 16th pew was reserved for the raffle prize). The pews all sold for between £100 and £300 and, together with a framed photograph of the church, 2 antique cast iron radiators and the raffle, a grand total of £2,700 was raised. A huge thank you to all those involved in the evening including: - Liam Hopkins for kindly storing the pews for the past 2 years; - Ian Hale, George Adams Jnr, and Martin Pitman for man-handling the pews and transporting them to the Village Hall; - Jackie Cunningham and Sue Hedges for making the pews more presentable for selling; - All those who contributed to the buffet. We are delighted to say that we are now in a position to provide additional chair seating for the church. Community Cafe All enjoyed the Craft Demonstration by Leslie Hurford at last month’s Community Cafe. The Corn Dollies were great. Rota 6 July - Jean Blewit and Jean Hopkins 3 August - Sue Carey and Sandy Bateman 7 September - Kathy Woodward and Jane Lyons. SONGS OF PRAISE This service will focus on your favourite hymns. Join us and enjoy a good sing along! Sunday 11th August at 5.30pm St Michael’s Bells We are delighted to report that the centuries old bells in the late medieval tower at St. Michael’s Church in Dundry are now back in action ringing for special occasions and occasional services, as well as for Monday bellringing practice, after three years of restricted use during renovation work in the church building. Our bells are also very popular with visiting bands of bellringers from all over the country, having recently hosted groups from Cornwall and Hertfordshire, and in August you can listen out for ringers from London (Friday 16th, 11.15am-noon) and Dorset (Saturday 31st, 10am-10.45am).
