My dear friends,

Looking back at my letter last month I can see I spoke a little too soon about sunshine and summer! Sorry about that. Maybe this month?! British summer, much like the game of golf, is predictable only in its unpredictability! However, July gives us a marker as the halfway point of the year (can you believe it?), and in the church we settle into a pattern of worship and reflection on God’s creation and all that surrounds us. We hear much about our responsibilities as the human race in terms of the environment, and rightly so, and it is therefore no bad thing that we dwell for a while on what that might mean for you and for me. This is the Green season in the church. If you pop in to any of our churches you should see that the altar is ‘dressed’ in a green frontal to add focus to this notion of God as our creator and the one who gives us ‘dominion’ over all we can see. It is a great privilege and a huge responsibility.

During June Julie and I had a week away in Italy. We stayed in a small town in Tuscany which had an interesting history. Where the main town now sits was once a vast area of marshland, and high on a hill which overlooks the modern town sits the original settlement called Montecatini Alto. It is accessible mainly via a funicular railway which is always fun! The thing about going up the hill on that railway is that when you reach the top you have the most incredible panorama that spreads before you. Hills, plains, houses and trees all in a vast blanket of colour and diversity, and as it was a particularly clear day when we made the trip, it went on for miles. I am always in wonder when I see a view like that, and it reminds me of how incredible our world really is. In the creation story Adam and Eve are reminded of their responsibilities, and while the story tells us that they quickly renege on their instructions, they are after all only human, nevertheless we still have those words of promise and privilege ringing in our ears when we consider the part we play in our planet. And that too will be reflected in our worship as we work through the summer months.

While we go ‘Green’ in general, July is a busy month with much going on, and you will find various details of activities elsewhere in the Magazine and in our weekly church bulletins. In Chew Magna the Friends of St Andrews have their AGM, Stanton Drew has their Flower Show, has a Cream Tea, Chew Magna has a Safari Supper, and we have a number of weddings and no less than 3 baptisms to enjoy before the end of the month. So enjoy the summer and all that it brings. We wish our school exam sitters the very best in their results, and if you are taking a break, have a wonderful time.

Yours in Christ,

Charles Roberts

The Lakeside Group of Churches Time to Reflect

By the time you read this I may be a Granny! Our first grandchild is due on 30 June. Very exciting! So our holiday this month will be up in Scotland, cooing over a new- born. Let’s hope he or she looks more like their parents than their grandparents.

I remember when our eldest son was born that he received a little T-shirt that said ‘If you think I’m cute you should see my dad’. No prizes for guessing who gave it to him!

I wonder who people see when they look at you. I’m not speaking of the familial physiological likeness but rather whether you reflect something of the nature and character of your heavenly Father. Can people look at you and recognise you as part of the Christian family?

It’s easy for us to point the finger at others and say they are hypocrites or fail to live up to the high standards of Christian faith. I have to own that as I write this, following President Trump’s visit, that I find some of his views far from the Christian ones I espouse. If I allow myself I can get quite heated about the different ways in which people make Christian claims. ‘Living the story of God’s love’ shouldn’t be about taking pot shots at others but rather seeking to become more like Christ ourselves. We all fail at that.

I’ve been doing some reassessment of my life as I realise a new generation is entering our family. It makes you think about what really matters and how you apportion your time. May I encourage you during July, traditionally aholiday month, as you come to the end of school and college programmes, put down the tools of your trade, to take time to reflect on your life. Think about the next phase or chapter and how you might allow God’s graces to shape you to become more like Him. What needs to change? How will you make space for that? Are you ready to wear the T-shirt?

Wishing you God’s blessings!

The Rt Revd Ruth Worsley Bishop of Taunton

Please note that the Deanery Celebration - Telling our Story - due to be held on Sunday 14 July in Saltford has been cancelled.

Pew Auction Success

The pew auction in May proved a resounding success!

The evening began with many people viewing the pews whilst enjoying a delicious and plentiful buffet. At 7.30 sharp local auctioneer, Richard Nancekivell from David James & Partners, started the bidding for the first of the 15 pews. (The 16th pew was reserved for the raffle prize).

The pews all sold for between £100 and £300 and, together with a framed photograph of the church, 2 antique cast iron radiators and the raffle, a grand total of £2,700 was raised. A huge thank you to all those involved in the evening including:

- Liam Hopkins for kindly storing the pews for the past 2 years; - Ian Hale, George Adams Jnr, and Martin Pitman for man-handling the pews and transporting them to the Village Hall; - Jackie Cunningham and Sue Hedges for making the pews more presentable for selling; - All those who contributed to the buffet.

We are delighted to say that we are now in a position to provide additional chair seating for the church.

Community Cafe

All enjoyed the Craft Demonstration by Leslie Hurford at last month’s Community Cafe. The Corn Dollies were great.

St Michael’s Bells

We are delighted to report that the centuries old bells in the late medieval tower at St. Michael’s Church in Dundry are now back in action ringing for special occasions and occasional services, as well as for Monday bellringing practice, after three years of restricted use during renovation work in the church building.

Our bells are also very popular with visiting bands of bellringers from all over the country, having recently hosted groups from Cornwall and Hertfordshire, and in August you can listen out for ringers from London (Friday 16th, 11.15am-noon) and Dorset (Saturday 31st, 10am-10.45am).

Two of our pictures show our own tower captain Esmond Taylor showing apprentice bellringer Andy Wiltshire the ropes, while the other shows him leading ringers Fiona Harper and Jane Swyer.

FREE ENTRY - ALL WELCOME Dundry Pre School’s Big Day Out

Due to the Village Hall being used as a Polling Station, Dundry Pre School have recently needed to relocate for a day. We were lucky enough to get to use the fantastic new facilities at St Michael’s Church in Dundry. The children were very excited to explore their new surroundings with us, and see the church’s selection of toys - a particular favourite being the Doll’s House.

The staff enjoyed using the great new kitchen to prepare snacks, and some of the children recognised the area as a place they had sat for Saturday morning Café.

During the day, we did our termly visit to the Hurford’s Farm, where we watched the cows being milked, learnt about the cows and organic milk, saw the calves being fed, planted our own wild flowers and met lots of sheep. We enjoyed learning lots from the Hurford Family, and came away with lots of craft activities to keep us busy. Many thanks as always for a great time, and preparing a barn for us to eat our lunch in.

We returned to the church to finish our day, with milk and a biscuit and some exciting stories we found.

Thanks to everyone who helped us make our day a great adventure; the generous and knowledgeable Hurford family and everyone at St Michael’s Church for their warm welcome, fabulous facilities and trusting us to relocate there for the day.

Our Summer Event this year was a Society Luncheon. Bringing to an end a hugely successful 45th year since the Society’s foundation it was held at the Bathwick Boatman Riverside Restaurant. Forty seven members enjoyed a superb meal with great hospitality in this beautifully situated restaurant on the bank of the in Bath, the whole experience enhanced by two short talks. Firstly, Terry Hardick, whose family have owned the Bath Boating Station since the mid 1800s, told us of the history of boatbuilding at Bathwick. Terry himself, after completing his National Service worked as a boatbuilder producing those splendid wooden skiffs that are so familiar on the river; his daughter followed him and now his granddaughter is learning those same skills.

After lunch, we heard from Sally Helvey, about the Cleveland Pools. This is an open air Georgian swimming pool, just 200m upstream from the restaurant. The Pool buildings are in the form of a perfect crescent, in fact Bath’s smallest crescent. Fed by both river water and a natural (cold) spring the Pools were used for swimming until the late 60s, then had a short life as a trout farm and tea rooms. Now with the aid of lottery funding and a great deal of enthusiasm it is being restored and will resume its life as a swimming pool with water heated by solar power. Sally is a trustee of the Cleveland Pools Trust; she gave us a brilliant illustrated account of this Georgian open swimming pool’s history and the really exciting plans for its restoration. It was an absolutely splendid event!

Our next meeting, on Thursday 3 October, will be the start of our winter lecture season. Everyone welcome! Please come and support your own Local History Society. Russell Peters. Tel: 01275332742/07976266427. [email protected]

Chew Valley U3A

After a short summer break the Chew Valley U3A will recommence its monthly meetings at Ubley Village Hall on Monday 19 August, 2019 with a talk by Lottie Dale entitled Falling with Style.

Lottie has made over 1000 parachute jumps and will be telling us about her time as part of a sky diving display team. Doors will be open from 10.00 am to welcome members both new and old to enjoy light refreshments before the meeting commences at 10.30 am. There will be a meeting fee of £1 for members of £2.50 for visitors. Making More Connections in the Chew Valley

Chew Valley Connect is creating relaxed informal get togethers for older people in the Chew Valley. There is no need to ‘join’ Chew Valley Connect – you just turn up, on your own or with friends, for a cup of tea, some cake and a chance to chat. It gives you a way to find out what you have in common with other people you meet there. Interests people have already found they have in common through Chew Valley Connect include: someone to go to the cinema with, to go for a walk, chat to over a cup of tea or lunch, visit a garden, meet to do craft activities, or play card or board games. It’s all informal and you can swap contact information and make shared plans. The idea is to hold get togethers in different parts of the Chew Valley area, four times a year.

The next get together is at Bishop Sutton Village Hall (BS39 5XQ) on Tuesday 9 July, from 2.30 to 4.30. The village hall is in the middle of the village, on the A368.

You can find out more, or contact Chew Valley Connect, through the new web site chewvalleyconnect.uk. Having a web site also makes it possible for Chew Valley Connect to achieve another of its aims – to let people find other relevant local organisations and groups. Just go the web site and click on ‘Other Groups and Organisations’.

Looking ahead, the next two Chew Valley Connect get togethers are, first, at Compton Martin Village Hall on Monday 23 September from 2.30 to 4.30 pm. The address is The Street, Compton Martin, BS40 6JN.

The next one after that is at Village Hall on Friday 13 December from 2.30 to 4.30 The hall is in Felton Lane, Winford, BS40 8AD.

Older people from the Chew Valley and around are all invited! Puzzle Page Dundry Litter Busters

The Dundry Litter Busters will be holding their third spring cleaning session on Sunday 23 June. Meet at the Royal British Legion at 10.15 for a 10.30 start. Everyone is welcome, particularly those who weren’t able to make the previous Litter Picks but would like to help keep Dundry tidy. Gloves and litter grabbers will be provided.

So many people have commented on the work we’ve done so far. Thank you for all the positive comments and thanks we’ve received. There are of course numerous other people who regularly pick up litter near their homes and also as they walk around the Village. Every single piece of litter picked up helps to keep the parish looking tidy.

If you have any ideas to share then please email [email protected] or ring Judith on 0117 964 2804 or Jane on 0117 964 3271.

Dundry Parish Council

Dundry Parish Council met Monday 10th June. Councillors discussed:

- Littering & fly tipping, particularly on Hill Road but also more generally in the Parish. There were a number of ideas, including using CCTV, repairing fences & cutting back undergrowth as well as installing litter bins. It was agreed that all these ideas will be considered, some to be costed ahead of potential progress.

- A decision about the development at the airport appears to be delayed by the new administration at Council.

- Councillor Fiddian has ‘liberated’ the old Dundry ‘finger posts’ from a storage yard, where they have been in safe keeping, they will need some repairs before being re-installed, councillors agreed to fund up to £100 for this work.

- A planning application to convert an old barn on Dundry Lane into a health & wellbeing centre was discussed. There is local opposition to this scheme, & members of the public attended to voice their concerns. This is a resubmission of a previous application, with some changes. However councillors are still opposed to this overdevelopment, they are concerned about increase in traffic & the loss of grass to tarmac. They also wanted to see an environmental impact assessment, specifically around the effect on bats & greater crested newts. Councillor Hugh Gregor has met with local residents & is also opposed to this development.

- Councillor Holger Laux had discussed the future of Dundry Consolidated Charities with trustees. They are in the process of dissolving the charity and are hopeful that the funds can be used to install a defibrillator locally, which was seen as positive by DPC.

- There were reports from the Clerk and councillors about meetings that have taken place locally.

For the full minutes see http://www.dundry.org.uk

The next meeting of Dundry Parish Council will be on Monday 8 July 2019

If you would like something to be included on the agenda, please notify a councillor or the Clerk by Friday 28 June. You can also raise matters in the Public Forum but, depending on what they are, full discussion may have to be left to the following meeting. St Michael’s Church Rota
