AIAA 2016-5388 AIAA SPACE Forum 13 - 16 September 2016, Long Beach, California AIAA SPACE 2016 An Artificial-Gravity Space-Settlement Ground-Analogue Design Concept Gregory A. Dorais1 NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, 94035 The design concept of a modular and extensible hypergravity facility is presented. Several benefits of this facility are described including that the facility is suitable as a full- scale artificial-gravity space-settlement ground analogue for humans, animals, and plants for indefinite durations. The design is applicable as an analogue for on-orbit settlements as well as those on moons, asteroids, and Mars. The design creates an extremely long-arm centrifuge using a multi-car hypergravity vehicle travelling on one or more concentric circular tracks. This design supports the simultaneous generation of multiple-gravity levels to explore the feasibility and value of and requirements for such space-settlement designs. The design synergizes a variety of existing technologies including centrifuges, tilting trains, roller coasters, and optionally magnetic levitation. The design can be incrementally implemented such that the facility can be operational for a small fraction of the cost and time required for a full implementation. Brief concept of operation examples are also presented. 1043 INVESTIGATION AND SHAKING TABLE TESTS OF SUBWAY STRUCTURES OF THE HYOGOKEN-NANBU EARTHQUAKE T IWATATE1, Y KOBAYASHI2, H KUSU3 And K RIN4 SUMMARY A detailed reconnaissance survey was conducted at the underground structures such as subways, mountain tunnels, multipurpose underground ducts and other underground structures, etc. around the Hanshin District caused by the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake. Among them, the Daikai subway station is the first subway structure that completely collapsed due to the earthquake. The damage mechanism of the subway structure, especially at the center column, and the dynamic soil- structure interaction and the dynamic forces acting on the structure were clarified through the scaled model shaking table tests and the simulation analyses. From this study, it was verified that the subway structure collapsed due to lack of the load carrying capacity against shear at the center column. INTRODUCTION The Hyogoken-nanbu earthquake of January 17, 1995 caused severe damages to underground structures, such as subway structures and tunnels in Kobe. Among them, a damage to subway structure that completely collapsed due to the earthquake, was one of the astonishing event, because of the fact that underground structures have been considered to be relatively safe from earthquake effect compared to structures constructed on the ground. The author, who belongs to the underground structural engineering group of the Committee of Earthquake Engineering under Japan Society of Civil Engineering (1996), implemented a reconnaissance survey on the damages to the subway structures and tunnels. This paper describes the outline of the damages, the destructive peculiarities of the subway structures, and the experimental study on the dynamic behavior and the damage mechanism of the structure, especially at the center column through the shaking table tests and the simulation analyses. -

Five in-depth case studies (Hongkong, Tokyo-Narita, London- Heathrow, Chicago- O’Hare and Paris-Charles de Gaulle) and eight smaller case studies (Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Shanghai-Pudong, Bangkok, Beijing, Rome- Fiumicino, Istanbul-Atatürk and Munich- Franz Josef Strauss) are conducted. A wide range of possible transportation alternatives was identified based on past corridor studiesandinconsultationwithelectedofficials,stakeholders,cityandagencystaff,andthecommunity duringtheprojectinitiationphase.Theresultingtransitoptionswereevaluatedandrefinedthrougha threeͲstepscreeningprocesstoidentifytheRecommendedAlternative(s)thatbestmeetsthemobility needs and goals for transit improvements in the Corridor. The first two screening efforts were documentedinthePEROW/WSABCorridorAAInitialScreeningReportcompletedinJuly2011.Thefinal levelofevaluationoftheFinalAlternativesisdocumentedinthisAAreport. 2.1 Previous Study Efforts Startingin1996,numerousstudieshaveidentifiedtheneedforimprovedtravelconnectionsbetween LosAngelesandOrangecounties,includingthereuseofallorportionsofthePEROW/WSABCorridorfor transit purposes once again.
