We tested odour traps for the monitoring of Flower chafers (Cetoniidae). These traps have been designed for eradication or monitoring the beetles in Mediterranean orchards where these beetles can be present in large numbers. Therefore, it is unclear whether these traps can be used to monitor these species in Northern Europe at sites where these species have relatively low population sizes. Odour traps for Cetonia aurata Linnaeus, 1761 and Protaetia cuprea Fabricius, 1775 were tested in five sites in Belgium and odour traps for Oxythyrea funesta Poda, 1761 and Tropinota hirta (Poda, 1761) at one site. In total 5 C. aurata , 17 Protaetia metallica (Herbst, 1782) and 2 O. funesta were captured. Furthermore, some more common Cetoniidae were found besides 909 non-Cetoniidae invertebrates. I conclude that the traps are not interesting to monitor C. aurata when the species is relatively rare. However, the traps seem to be useful to monitor P. metallica and to detect O. funesta even if it is present in low numbers. However, it is important to lower the high mortality rate of predominantly honeybee and bumblebees by adapting the trap design. The list was created between 1995 and 1999, and subsequently updated in response to the Species and Habitats Review Report published in 2007. The table also provides details of the species' occurrences in the four UK countries, and describes whether the species was an 'original' species (on the original list created between 1995 and 1999), or was added following the 2007 review. All original species were provided with Species Action Plans (SAPs), species statements, or are included within grouped plans or statements, whereas there are no published plans for the species added in 2007. Scientific names and commonly used synonyms derive from the Nameserver facility of the UK Species Dictionary, which is managed by the Natural History Museum. This paper reports the collecting of adult beetles and third-instar larvae of Coelocorynus desfontainei Antoine, 1999 in Cameroon and provides new data on the biology of this high-altitude Afromontane genus. It also presents the first diagnosis of this genus based on larval characters and examination of its systematic position in a phylogenetic context using 78 parsimony informa- tive larval and adult characters. Based on the results of our analysis we (1) support the hypothesis that the tribe Trichiini is paraphy- letic with respect to both Valgini and the rest of the Cetoniinae, and (2) propose that the Trichiini subtribe Cryptodontina, represented by Coelocorynus, is a sister group of the Valgini: Valgina, represented by Valgus. The larvae-only analyses were about twofold better than the adults-only analyses in providing a phylogenetic resolution consistent with the larvae + adults analyses. -
