Giant corporations search for average cities in which to run market tests for new brands of crunchos and fizzits. The targets tend to run to com fortable communities like Rochester, N.Y., Columbus, Ohio, or Des Moines, Iowa. Political commentators also feel the impulse to characterize typical Ameri cans.
