On Word-Numerals in Nāgavarma's Canarese Prosody | IJJS
International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol. 15, No. 3 (2019) 1-21 ON WORD-NUMERALS IN NĀGAVARMA’S CANARESE PROSODY Dipak Jadhav 1. Introduction In India, three major systems, based on alphabets of Devanāgari script or words of a particular Indian language such as Sanskrit or Prakrit or Canarese, were developed for expressing numbers. The two are the kaṭapayādi system1 and Āryabhaṭa I’s alphabetical notation2 and the other one is word-numerals (bhūta-saṃkhyā). These systems excluding Āryabhaṭa I’s alphabetical notation have been widespread in India in various disciplines of learning including not only mathematics but also prosody. The purpose of these systems was two-fold. One was to preserve important results.3 The other was to compose the verses using these systems in accordance with the requirements of their metres.4 In the system of word-numerals, numbers were expressed by means of significant words often arranged as in the decimal place-value notation. For example, 4 is represented by kṛta5 as it is a special term, meaning cater, employed in India for the dice or the side of a dice with four dots.6 The word-numerals are found to have been used in India long before the commencement of the Christian era. The earliest instance of a word being used to denote a whole number is found in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa. The word used therein is kṛta denoting 4. The same word for the same purpose was also used in the Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa. The word gāyatrī (Vedic metre or metre of 24 syllables) denoting 24 is found to have been used in the Kātyāyana Śrauta Sūtra. -

To a KsJtatriya warrior, however, the fiercest in- cidents of battle, instead of being appalling, served only as tests of bravery that opened Heaven's gates to him. It was this belief that supported the most insignificant of combatants fighting on foot when they rushed against Bhishma, presenting their breasts to the celestial weapons shot by him, like insects rushing on a blazing fire. I am not a Kshatriya. The prespect of battle, therefore, cannot be unappalling or welcome to me. On the other hand, I frankly own that it is appall- ing. If I receive support, that support may encourage me. I am no Garuda that I would spurn the strength of number* when battling against difficulties. I am no Arjuna conscious of superhuman energy and aided by Kecava himself so that I may eHcounter any odds. -

It was usual in all censuses to collect and publish information on race, tribes and castes. The Constitution lays down that "the state shall promote with special care educational and economic interests of the weaker sections of the people and, in parti cular, of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and shall protect them from social injustice and all forms of exploitation". To assist states in fulfiHing their responsibility in this regard the 1961 Census provided a series of special tabulations of the social and economic data on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The lists of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are notified by the Presi· dent under the Constitution and the Parliament is empowered to include or exclude from the lists any caste or tribe. No other source can claim the same authenticity and comprehensiveness as the census of India to help the Government in taking de· cisions on matters such as these. -

Sufre el destierro y los peligros de la selva inhóspita. Las descripciones de su belleza física muestran también su fortaleza espiritual y deberes de esposa, del suadharma, aspectos que la convierten en un modelo del estereotipo femenino de fidelidad en el Hinduismo. Palabras clave: estereotipo femenino, belleza, épica, literatura. ABSTRACT Nala and Damayantī is an interpolation of the great Indian epic Mahābhārata, whose main character is the heroine Damayantī.Suffers exile and the dangers of the inhospitable jungle. The descriptions of her physical beauty also show his spiritual strength and duties as a wife, the suadharma, aspects that makes her a feminine stereotype model of faithfulness in Hinduism. Consortium for Research on Educational Access, Transitions and Equity South Asian Nomads - A Literature Review Anita Sharma CREATE PATHWAYS TO ACCESS Research Monograph No. 58 January 2011 University of Sussex Centre for International Education The Consortium for Educational Access, Transitions and Equity (CREATE) is a Research Programme Consortium supported by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). Its purpose is to undertake research designed to improve access to basic education in developing countries. It seeks to achieve this through generating new knowledge and encouraging its application through effective communication and dissemination to national and international development agencies, national governments, education and development professionals, non-government organisations and other interested stakeholders. Access to basic education lies at the heart of development. Lack of educational access, and securely acquired knowledge and skill, is both a part of the definition of poverty, and a means for its diminution. Sustained access to meaningful learning that has value is critical to long term improvements in productivity, the reduction of inter- generational cycles of poverty, demographic transition, preventive health care, the empowerment of women, and reductions in inequality. The CREATE partners CREATE is developing its research collaboratively with partners in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
