At last the time has come, we will once again enjoy the main event of Lanzarote.

The oldest and most prestigious IRONMAN in Europe returns, it will be the first of such in over 16 months.

Congratulations and thanks to all those who have trusted and stood by us with this organization that will be the starting line on the 3rd of July, 2021.

It has been a long road, thanks to all we have achieved, there aren’t enough words to express our gratitude.

Along with all the institutions that collaborate, support and are also essential for the development of Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote. Volunteers, sponsors, European Sport Destination of Lanzarote Tourism, City Councils of the island, Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Government of the , we wish that you enjoy this unique and special event.

See you at the START line!

7 WELCOME Ángel Víctor Torres President of the Canary Islands

Athletes from all over the world, we offer you our warmest welcome and best wishes for the success of the Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote 2021.

This is a sporting event that has placed the Canary Islands on the elites international sporting calendar. A spectacle of human achievement in which more than 1,000 IRONMEN & IRONWOMEN cover a 3.8 kilometre swim, a 180 kilometre bike ride and a 42 kilometre marathon.

Since 1992, when 148 participants dared to take on this titanic challenge among volcanoes for the first time, Lanzarote has become a world reference point for triathletes. An island that, in each edition, offers its facilities, its mild temperatures and its best face to the thousands of athletes, fans and media that come to the race. We were looking forward to welcoming you back.

We are back with more enthusiasm and excitement than ever. Sport is part of our life and will be essential for the recovery of our main activity, tourism, where we continue to position ourselves as an international destination of quality, safety and excellence.

8 BIENVENIDOS María Dolores Corujo Berriel President Cabildo of Lanzarote

Lanzarote resumes in 2021 its most emblematic sporting event, after the forced cancellation of last year's edition due to the pandemic.

There is no other competition that better reflects the conditions of the island for the practice of sports as the IRONMAN Lanzarote, since swimming, running and cycling are ideal activities for both beginners and professionals of high competition.

IRONMAN Lanzarote has the incentive of running through an island that values nature, something that is appreciated by all travellers who are sensiti- ve and respectful of the environment, such as sports lovers.

I am sure that this new edition will confirm the island's commitment to become a connected, intelligent, sustainable and safe tourist destination, and I hope that the wind is gentle and does not make one of the most difficult in the world even harder.

9 WELCOME Manuel López Santana General Director of Sports

On the road to post-pandemic recovery, top-level sporting competition is back in our lives, Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote, one of the most beautiful triathlon races in the world.

After a two-year hiatus, the Canary Islands will gladly promote through international channels that we are ready to make up for lost time, guarantee health safety and to reissue our title of “The Lucky Island”.

In its 29th edition, the veteran Lanzarote race will once again show how, with will, effort and discipline, the human being pushes his limits to reach the goal, whether it is the qualification for the mythical IRONMAN World Championship 2021 in Kailua-Kona () or, simply, to complete the distance of this intense event.

To reach the achievement of becoming an IRONMAN here on Lanzarote. Triathletes from all over the world are finishing their training and packing their suitcases for the Canary Islands. The gunshot will mark the start of the race and the end of your worries.

10 BIENVENIDOS Francisco Javier Aparicio Sports Councillor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote

Lanzarote is once again in luck. After the forced halt of sporting competitions around the world due to the pandemic, and after a very hard year for athle- tes, on the 3rd of July, the Island of Volcanoes will once again host one of the most spectacular and internationally renowned events, the IRONMAN Lan- zarote.

The 29th edition of this sporting event, a qualifier for the World Champions- hip in Hawaii, will bring more than a thousand triathletes from all continents to Lanzarote. An event that offers them an unforgettable experience combi- ning sport, at the highest level, with the enjoyment of a unique landscape and an enormous natural wealth.

For me it is a real pride to see how the people of Lanzarote have made IRONMAN their own, and not only because of the outstanding participation of island athletes, but also because of the work and collaboration of all the volunteers who ensure the smooth running and safety of this prestigious event.

Welcome to all of you and thank you very much for your dedication and love of sport.

11 WELCOME Jorge García Martinez Spanish Triathlon Federation

From the Spanish Triathlon Federation, we are very pleased to resume a relationship with IRONMAN Lanzarote, with which we have always felt identified and has been a great promoter of Long Distance Triathlon in Spain.

The FETRI has always believed in public-private collaboration, to help the development of the sport, and that is why Lanzarote joins the strategic alliance it has with the rest of IRONMAN events, so that in 2021, all IRONMAN events in Spain, will be under the umbrella of the FETRI, achieving a permanent support, which will allow working together to position the Ironman events at the highest level.

12 BIENVENIDOS Juan Carlos Serrano Sánchez President of the Canary Islands Triathlon Federation

IRONMAN Lanzarote returns, clear reference of the sport in our archipelago after a complicated year in which things have not been very favourable for our society and neither for the health of people.

Now, thanks to this events, there seems to be a glimmer of hope in the sporting world, as it leads the way for others to follow.

The IRONMAN Lanzarote is organized by Club La Santa in such masterful way, that even due to the current climate, we are able to carry out an event of this magnitude. I appreciate and admire the work they are developing together with the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Tias Town Hall and of course the invaluable and generous collaboration of clubs and volunteers to bring to fruition this sporting event, which comes to give certainty to the High Quality Sport.

15 16 3 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT LANZAROTE

1) THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL ISLAND Visitors to Lanzarote can explore the moon without leaving the Earth. Some say that Timanfaya Park is exactly like the surface of the moon and the Apollo space program used photos for its missions. Nowadays, the island receives scientists from around the world to do research for the first human mission to Mars. 2) THE WINE-PRODUCING ISLAND Volcanic terrain wouldn’t appear to be the most suitable for vine cultivation, but volcanic ash is actually perfect for producing a special type of wine in the region of La Geria. The grape strains have been specially developed so that they can withstand strong winds. Tourists visiting one of the many local vineyards will have the chance to taste the locally-produced wines. 3) THE CINEMATOGRAPHIC ISLAND The landscape of Lanzarote is so extraordinary that it has been used as the backdrop for a variety of films. Blockbusters such as When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, Moby Dick and more recently, the Star Wars series.

36 IRONMAN STORIES IOANNIS KOUTSO Ioannis Koutso from Greece is a Captain working on LNG carriers -large tankers carrying liquified natural gas around the world. Most of the year, he is away from home and his family, which is the hardest part of his job.

However, he manages to train on board of the vessel statically. His swim sessions are done on a very small pool that is on board (2,8mx2m) by tightening his ankles with straps.

This way, he manages to have a basic feeling for the water, making some drills for the upper body.He carries with him a bike with the most lightweight trainer and all the running training is done in a treadmill.

Despite his restricted training envi- ronment, adverse weather conditions, non-standard working hours and limited internet connection, Ioannis has managed to participate in many challenging races and IRONMAN races around the world and he has never been DNF in any!

37 IRONMAN STORIES MARCUS ZIEMANN In 2007, Marcus Ziemann from , started using cardiac pacemaker and after the surgery he was told that he could never do sports again.

But he never gave up his passion for running and training hard. Two years later he competed his first long distance race at IRONMAN , and he was very proud to hear the magic words at the finish line.

After a lot of other international IRONMAN races, life hit Marcus again, this time with a battle against cancer and he was the winner of it once again!

Now, he is proud finisher of 40 IRONMAN races, including US, , Malaysia, , Brazil... and this is the first time at IRONMAN Lanzarote and racing after the pandemic.

38 IRONMAN STORIES IRONMAN AGAINST ALS This year, 25 triathletes will participate in Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote with the aim of giving visibility and raising funds for ALS research.

Miguel Ángel Roldán, his coach and ex triathlete who was diagnosed with ALS 3 years ago, is an inspiration for many athletes and is a reference in the community of those affected by ALS in Spain. "We refuse to remain seated, and that is why we want to convey the impor- tance of physicalactivity in our day-to-day life and the defiant attitude against the multiple problems that we can encounter in a newspaper, always looking for solutions." For a world without ALS, we encourage everyone to support their cause and to follow “IRONMAN contra la ELA”on social media.
