On behalf of all of us at IRONMAN, congratulations on getting to the start line and welcome to race day. Despite enduring one of the toughest years, you have continued to put in hard work and dedication. You are now prepared to realize your dream of becoming an IRONMAN and prove “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE®.” The Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote is one of the longest-standing races in Europe. You will be racing through some of the most captivating lands- capes in Spain. As you take in the unique beauty of the course, be sure to cherish each moment and appreciate the sacrifices and hard work you have put in to be here. We are ready to provide you with a memorable race experience. Be strong, stay safe, and have a great race day. 6 WELCOME Fabio Cabrera IRONMAN Lanzarote Race Director At last the time has come, we will once again enjoy the main event of Lanzarote. The oldest and most prestigious IRONMAN in Europe returns, it will be the first of such in over 16 months. Congratulations and thanks to all those who have trusted and stood by us with this organization that will be the starting line on the 3rd of July, 2021. It has been a long road, thanks to all we have achieved, there aren’t enough words to express our gratitude. Along with all the institutions that collaborate, support and are also essential for the development of Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote. Volunteers, sponsors, European Sport Destination of Lanzarote Tourism, City Councils of the island, Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Government of the Canary Islands, we wish that you enjoy this unique and special event. See you at the START line! 7 WELCOME Ángel Víctor Torres President of the Canary Islands Athletes from all over the world, we offer you our warmest welcome and best wishes for the success of the Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote Triathlon 2021. This is a sporting event that has placed the Canary Islands on the elites international sporting calendar. A spectacle of human achievement in which more than 1,000 IRONMEN & IRONWOMEN cover a 3.8 kilometre swim, a 180 kilometre bike ride and a 42 kilometre marathon. Since 1992, when 148 participants dared to take on this titanic challenge among volcanoes for the first time, Lanzarote has become a world reference point for triathletes. An island that, in each edition, offers its facilities, its mild temperatures and its best face to the thousands of athletes, fans and media that come to the race. We were looking forward to welcoming you back. We are back with more enthusiasm and excitement than ever. Sport is part of our life and will be essential for the recovery of our main activity, tourism, where we continue to position ourselves as an international destination of quality, safety and excellence. 8 BIENVENIDOS María Dolores Corujo Berriel President Cabildo of Lanzarote Lanzarote resumes in 2021 its most emblematic sporting event, after the forced cancellation of last year's edition due to the pandemic. There is no other competition that better reflects the conditions of the island for the practice of sports as the IRONMAN Lanzarote, since swimming, running and cycling are ideal activities for both beginners and professionals of high competition. IRONMAN Lanzarote has the incentive of running through an island that values nature, something that is appreciated by all travellers who are sensiti- ve and respectful of the environment, such as sports lovers. I am sure that this new edition will confirm the island's commitment to become a connected, intelligent, sustainable and safe tourist destination, and I hope that the wind is gentle and does not make one of the most difficult triathlons in the world even harder. 9 WELCOME Manuel López Santana General Director of Sports On the road to post-pandemic recovery, top-level sporting competition is back in our lives, Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote, one of the most beautiful triathlon races in the world. After a two-year hiatus, the Canary Islands will gladly promote through international channels that we are ready to make up for lost time, guarantee health safety and to reissue our title of “The Lucky Island”. In its 29th edition, the veteran Lanzarote race will once again show how, with will, effort and discipline, the human being pushes his limits to reach the goal, whether it is the qualification for the mythical IRONMAN World Championship 2021 in Kailua-Kona (Hawaii) or, simply, to complete the distance of this intense event. To reach the achievement of becoming an IRONMAN here on Lanzarote. Triathletes from all over the world are finishing their training and packing their suitcases for the Canary Islands. The gunshot will mark the start of the race and the end of your worries. 10 BIENVENIDOS Francisco Javier Aparicio Sports Councillor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote Lanzarote is once again in luck. After the forced halt of sporting competitions around the world due to the pandemic, and after a very hard year for athle- tes, on the 3rd of July, the Island of Volcanoes will once again host one of the most spectacular and internationally renowned events, the IRONMAN Lan- zarote. The 29th edition of this sporting event, a qualifier for the World Champions- hip in Hawaii, will bring more than a thousand triathletes from all continents to Lanzarote. An event that offers them an unforgettable experience combi- ning sport, at the highest level, with the enjoyment of a unique landscape and an enormous natural wealth. For me it is a real pride to see how the people of Lanzarote have made IRONMAN their own, and not only because of the outstanding participation of island athletes, but also because of the work and collaboration of all the volunteers who ensure the smooth running and safety of this prestigious event. Welcome to all of you and thank you very much for your dedication and love of sport. 11 WELCOME Jorge García Martinez Spanish Triathlon Federation From the Spanish Triathlon Federation, we are very pleased to resume a relationship with IRONMAN Lanzarote, with which we have always felt identified and has been a great promoter of Long Distance Triathlon in Spain. The FETRI has always believed in public-private collaboration, to help the development of the sport, and that is why Lanzarote joins the strategic alliance it has with the rest of IRONMAN events, so that in 2021, all IRONMAN events in Spain, will be under the umbrella of the FETRI, achieving a permanent support, which will allow working together to position the Ironman events at the highest level. 12 BIENVENIDOS Juan Carlos Serrano Sánchez President of the Canary Islands Triathlon Federation IRONMAN Lanzarote returns, clear reference of the sport in our archipelago after a complicated year in which things have not been very favourable for our society and neither for the health of people. Now, thanks to this events, there seems to be a glimmer of hope in the sporting world, as it leads the way for others to follow. The IRONMAN Lanzarote is organized by Club La Santa in such masterful way, that even due to the current climate, we are able to carry out an event of this magnitude. I appreciate and admire the work they are developing together with the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Tias Town Hall and of course the invaluable and generous collaboration of clubs and volunteers to bring to fruition this sporting event, which comes to give certainty to the High Quality Sport. 13 EVENT SCHEDULE TUESDAY 29.06.2021 10:00 - 18:00 IRONMAN Lanzarote Info Centre open, Dance Studio, Club La Santa (Club La Santa guests only). Conducting long-term hazard assessment in active volcanic areas is of primordial importance 14 for land-use planning and to define emergency plans able to be applied in case of a crisis. Definition of 15 scenario hazard maps helps to mitigate the consequences of future eruptions by anticipating to the events 16 that may occur. Lanzarote is an active volcanic island that has hosted the largest (>1.5 km3 DRE) and 17 longest (6 years) eruption, the Timanfaya eruption (1730-36), on the Canary Islands in historical times 18 (last 600 years). This eruption brought severe economic losses and forced local people to migrate. In spite 19 of all these facts, no comprehensive hazard assessment neither hazard maps have been developed for the 20 island. In this work, we present an integrated long-term volcanic hazard evaluation using a systematic 21 methodology that includes spatial analysis and simulations of the most probable expected eruptive scenar- 22 ios. 23 24 1 Introduction 25 26 Active volcanic areas require conducting long-term hazard assessment in order to ensure a rational land 27 planning and to elaborate precise emergency plans that can be applied in case of a crisis.

  • Statistics Investigation
Statistics Investigation Planning Introduction I will investigate performance in the Olympic triathlon event using data gathered from the Olympic results website. The first Olympic triathlon was held at the Summer 2000 Olympics so data should be available for three Olympics (2000, 2004 and 2008). Men and women compete in separate events. I will use a census of the individual years and genders because in Autograph I can easily manipulate large data sets (there are typically 50 competitors in each event). Autograph will enable me to compare statistics for each data set, using box and whisker diagrams showing extreme values, quartiles and the inter-quartile range. I will also create scatter graphs of one data parameter against another so that I can see if there is any obvious relationship between them. Autograph can also easily fit trend lines (to enable predictions to be made) and calculate the Spearman’s ranking coefficient. A strong correlation could indicate, for instance, that the results in one sport were very likely to influence the overall results whilst a weak correlation would indicate that an athlete could do well or badly in that sport and still be successful overall. I am hoping to find what kind of athlete does best in a triathlon: must they be very good in all three sports, or are some sports more critical than others? I will also investigate the differences between men’s and women’s times to see whether the same patterns are seen in both and whether conclusions from the men’s race are equally valid for the women’s competition.
