Towards a Minor Theatre: the Task of the Playmaker in Our Country’S Good
Wenshan Review of Literature and Culture.Vol 5.2.June 2012.25-48. Towards a Minor Theatre: The Task of the Playmaker in Our Country’s Good Carol L. Yang ABSTRACT Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play Our Country’s Good (1988), as an adaptation of Thomas Keneally’s novel The Playmaker (1987), traces how a group of convicts, who are isolated in an eighteenth-century Australian penal colony, work together to produce George Farquhar’s The Recruiting Officer in celebration of the birthday of King George III. Arguably, Our Country’s Good is characterized by a kind of metatheatrical minorization of the major, a subtraction of the official State representatives, such as history, power structure, society, language, and text; the play is characterized by a polemicizing the sense of other spaces, and a form of threshold traversing that is rendered possible in the context of translation/adaptation and dramatic text/performance text in the theatre. This paper aims to analyze Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good in terms of Gilles Deleuze’s and Félix Guattari’s theories—such as the concepts of deterritorialization, reterritorialization, lines of flight, and minor theatre—in order to explore how the dispossessed convicts traverse the threshold of “becoming other” via the historicized immigration of transportation, which opens up lines of flight and generates the unceasing mapping of a new life. I would like to suggest that Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good presents a subtle counterpoint between the major theatre and the minor theatre: whereas a major theatre seeks to represent and to reproduce the power structure of the dominant state apparatus, the minor theatre operates by disseminating, varying, subverting the structures of the state and major theatre. -

232 Australian Folklore 25, 2010 Book Reviews Elizabeth Taylor, Haunted Halls: Ghostlore of American Campuses (Jackson, Mississippi: University Press of Mississippi, 2007). Paper and cloth. P. ix + 241. ISBN 978-1-57806-994-1. Unjacketed Cloth. $US 50-00. ISBN 978-1- 57806-995-8. Paper. $US 20-00. This somewhat unexpected volume, one by an associate professor of English at Bingham University, may indeed be said to be ‘the first in-depth study of Ghost Stories from American universities’. The volume treats an important and highly topical issue, namely how young adults (17–21) react to spatial and social change/ loss of safety at a peculiarly significant time in their lives, especially when they are exposed to institutional places old buildings, ones with disturbing/ traumatic human histories, suicides there and stories of excitement, mystery and danger. As well, and, despite new friends at hand, they are without their hitherto comforting support systems, and so, perforce, the more easily respond to the vibrations that lingering in those locations. What gives the study such intriguing insights is that writer and her informants—and these come from a score of named Universities—are all in the ‘system’, the former with years of responsible ‘residential assistant’ experience, and as having already published several ‘single-motif’ special pieces in this field. These focused on: sensory evidence; ghostly warnings; troubling encounters; desperate lovers, spectral Indians, etc. This material, now thoroughly integrated, is nicely rounded out with a meticulous ‘Index of Tale Types and Motifs’, the bulk falling between the standard E 230 and E 765 categories… and, interestingly, several of these have not been found by me in the better known (Australian) ghost lore collections. -

Scammell was on the 114th day of its voyage from New York to Melbourne, and had set a course for Port Phillip Heads when bad weather and rough seas dragged the ship towards shore. It ran aground on a reef at Point Danger near Torquay. There were 22 people on-board the Scammell, including the wife and daughter of Captain J. A. Chapman. The ship's dangerous position was first noticed by local fishermen at approximately 11am, and one of the local fishermen, Felix Rosser, attempted to row out to the ship to provide assistance, but was forced back to shore by strong seas. The following day after the seas had settled, and with a crowd of onlookers watching from the shore, the crew of the ship were able to lower a boat and evacuate all on board. The stormy weather which had caused the accident did not abate for some time, and the ship began to break up, littering the beach with wreckage and the £60,000 cargo. By the following Sunday crowds of looters were flocking to the area. -

Rambling in Overdrive: Travelling Through Tasmanian Literature CA Cranston Two years ago I published an anthology of original and published writings about Tasmania titled Along these lines: From Trowenna to Tasmania1 — a mistake it turns out (as far as the title goes) as readers generally assume that Trowenna is some other place, rather than some other time. The idea was to situate various texts about Tasmania into context, so that when traveling the arterial highways of the heart- shaped island one was presented with stories and histories (time) that live on the sides of the road (place). This paper will address the theme of the conference (‘Originally Tasmanian. Creativity and Innovation in the Island State’) with a methodology similar to that ‘driving’ the anthology. It will examine the relationship between context (the origin) and text (the representation), and by implication, the relationship between natural and symbolic worlds. The ramble, which textually refers to the discursive — ideas, like automobiles, that ‘run about’ — will be accommodated, and as such will occasionally disrupt normal expectations of chronology, the historian’s purview. The motivation for the anthology came out of a need to experience at first hand niggling doubts about the textual construction of the island. I was a migrant so (in terms of the conference theme) I’m not ‘Originally Tasmanian’. I was living in a biotic community I knew nothing about and for which I had no language. I was presented with a textual culture I knew little about, and I was hungry for island stories. -

224 CONCLUSION This literary study and close account of her social philosophy has demonstrated that the novelist, Eleanor Dark, was also a vigorous social protester and moralist, both concerned with pressing contemporary problems and with their psychological origins, and bent on showing in her fiction a close connection between political forces and individual lives. It has been made clear in this critical treatment .:hat, with a romantics revolutionary turn of mind, she was determined to open her readers eyes to so many social injustices. These were all too often perpetrated by mediocre leaders, and yet the people, in their ignorance and apathy, were hardly aware of them. To illustrate this she created a series of idealistic, independently thinking characters who set out to right social wrongs by exercising heroic personal integrity, by being true to their own consciences, and by establishing ideals which would enrich, rather than constrict, both the individual and society as a whole. The study has shown, however, that Dark always emphasised the need to put theory into action, and to curb simplistic idealism with a measure of lived practicality. There was presented in Chapter 2 the writers perception of human existence as a progression or journey, with her questing protagonists energetically engaging with all aspects of life as they struggled toward the goal of social harmony and the desired realisation of personal potential. Throughout, there has been critical emphasis upon the novels impressive celebration of life, and I have endeavoured to show that the vitality of Darks daring protagonists became a means of judging the behaviour of others, as she contrasted them with those lesser and more timid characters who refused Ito participate willingly in the mortal contest. -

For most literary critics writing (of the short story 1 short fiction) before Lawson was not worth much critical attention. H M Green states in his introduction to the short story between 1850 to 1890 that, "the short stories of the period were many in number but poor in quality." He regards most of the short fiction before Lawson as mere 'sketches' in comparison with Lawson's stories. The short story as a genrc gained popularity chiefly on account of it being published regularly in the Sydney Bulletin of the 1890s. -

F.O.O.D. (Fighting Order Over Disorder): An Analysis of Food and Its Significance in the Australian Novels of Christina Stead, Patrick White and Thea Astley. Jane Frugtneit A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Humanities James Cook University August 2007 ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to find a correlation between food as symbol and food as necessity, as represented in selected Australian novels by Christina Stead, Patrick White and Thea Astley. Food as a springboard to a unique interpretation of the selected novels has been under-utilised in academic research. Although comparatively few novels were selected for study, on the basis of fastidiousness, they facilitated a rigorous hermeneutical approach to the interpretation of food and its inherent symbolism. The principle behind the selection of these novels lies in the complexity of the prose and how that complexity elicits the “transformative powers of food” (Muncaster 1996, 31). The thesis examines both the literal and metaphorical representations of food in the novels and relates how food is an inextricable part of ALL aspects of life, both actual and fictional. Food sustains, nourishes and, intellectually, its many components offer unique interpretative tools for textual analysis. Indeed, the overarching structure of the thesis is analogous with the processes of eating, digestion and defecation. For example, following a discussion of the inextricable link between food, quest and freedom in Chapter One, which uncovers contrary attitudes towards food in the novels discussed, the thesis presents a more complex psychoanalytic theory of mental disorders related to food in Chapter Two.
