  • Fantasia the Famous Soundtracks of Walt Disney's Masterpieces Program
Fantasia The famous soundtracks of Walt Disney's masterpieces Sang Eun Kim soprano Luigi Giachino piano and transcriptions The Korean soprano Angela Kim with her wonderful voice and endearing presence on the stage meets the harmonies of the pianist Luigi Giachino, a great expert in film music, in a repertoire dedicated to the famous soundtracks of Walt Disney's masterpieces. The concert can be realized with the cinematographic projections made by Alba Film Festival. Since 1923 the Disney Studios have presented films that built the international history of cinema and animation, becoming immortal masterpieces as well, released from a mere function of entertainment and projected into a more “philosophical” dimension, to the point of rightfully becoming part of a worldwide popular culture. Despite the changes of time, aesthetics and lifestyles, Disney's lesson always remains current and reminds us that, despite the small and big difficulties of the life, we must continue to look forward, using the resources we have and finding solutions, never feeling lost and always listening to our emotions. The repertoire of this concert program embraces half a century of the Disney production and is a tribute to his unique style which also influenced the soundtracks. In the selected pieces, the atmospheres of poetry and dream are alternated with more playful and light-hearted moments, enhancing the versatility and great technical preparation of our artists. The concert can also be realized with the cinematic projections of the films, created by Alba Film

  • FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Answered by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Answered by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone Q: How did you come up with the idea for The Book of Mormon? Trey Parker: Matt and I went to see Avenue Q when it opened in 2003, and we were like, "Wow, this is actually really good." When it was over I was thinking, "This is exactly the kind of thing I’ve always dreamed about doing." Matt Stone: During intermission, we saw that we were thanked in the Playbill. "Well," we thought, "that's weird." Bobby Lopez: That's because I saw the South Park movie when it open in 1999, and I just thought, "Oh my God, this is exactly what I want to be doing." A week after that, the idea came to me for Avenue Q. Trey Parker: It happened purely by coincidence that Bobby showed up that night, he introduced himself and we went across the street for a drink. Matt Stone: Bobby is younger than Trey and me, so he looked at us like elder statesman and asked what he should do next. We asked, “What did he want to do?” And he said, "I want to write something about Joseph Smith and the Mormons." Bobby Lopez: When I said Joseph Smith, they were like, "We’ve wanted to do that, too!" They had it in their heads to do some kind of Joseph Smith musical, but never did. I said, "If you guys want to do that, that’s fine, because I’d really love to see what you do, more than what I would do." Trey Parker: It just became ridiculously obvious that we should team up and do something about Mormons.

  • 2012, BMI Reported Revenues of $898.7 Million and Royalty Distributions to Our Affiliates Totaling $749.8 Million
2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT BMI’s just–concluded fiscal year was one of the most challenging and most rewarding in the company’s recent history as we successfully REVENUE PER EMPLOYEE (THOUSANDS) refocused and realigned the company’s strategic vision and our operational infrastructure for a new era in rights management. Across every segment of the company’s operations, BMI has rededicated $1668 itself to be “the future of performing rights.” We are building upon our core competencies to ensure BMI’s continued relevance in a dynamic market, guided by principles of continuous improvement and innovation. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, BMI reported revenues of $898.7 million and royalty distributions to our affiliates totaling $749.8 million. These results represent a decline over the prior year, due primarily to the impact of the industry–wide settlement with the radio industry, which was announced in June. Excluding the impact of this settlement, BMI revenues would have increased by 4.1%. $529 BMI operates under GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and was required to absorb in FY 2012 the full amount of a one–time refund to RMLC stations of $70.5 million related to prior years. As a ‘94 ‘96 ‘98 ‘00 ‘02 ‘04 ‘06 ‘08 ‘10 ‘12 result, BMI moves into fiscal year 2013 unencumbered by prior financial obligations related to the agreement. Going forward, BMI projects PRODUCTIVITY HAS TRIPLED IN THE PAST 20 YEARS. a company–wide return to revenue and royalty distribution growth, resuming an unbroken 20–year record of year-over-year increases.

  • Parody As a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015
Parody as a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015 A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by John P. Thomerson BM, State University of New York at Fredonia, 2008 MM, University of Louisville, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT Parody is the most commonly used structural borrowing technique in contemporary American vernacular music. This study investigates parody as a borrowing practice, as a type of humor, as an expression of ethnic identity, and as a response to intellectual trends during the final portion of the twentieth century. This interdisciplinary study blends musicology with humor studies, ethnic studies, and intellectual history, touching on issues ranging from reception history to musical meaning and cultural memory. As a structural borrowing technique, parody often creates incongruity—whether lyrical, stylistic, thematic, evocative, aesthetic, or functional—within a recognized musical style. Parodists combine these musical incongruities with other comic techniques and social conventions to create humor. Parodists also rely on pre-existing music to create, reinforce, and police ethnic boundaries, which function within a racialized discourse through which parodists often negotiate ethnic identities along a white-black binary. Despite parody’s ubiquity in vernacular music and notwithstanding the genre’s resonance with several key themes from the age of fracture, cultivated musicians have generally parody. The genre’s structural borrowing technique limited the identities musicians could perform through parodic borrowings. This study suggests several areas of musicological inquiry that could be enriched through engagement with parody, a genre that offers a vast and largely unexplored repertoire indicating how musical, racial, and cultural ideas can circulate in popular discourse.
