Driving the Change from Computers to Computerisation Excerpts from the book Icons of Indian IT By by Anand Parthasarathy & S Sadagopan 2018 / 148 pages / Hardcover / Rs. 1995 ISBN: 978-8183284851 / Wisdom Tree Prof Mahabala never saw himself as just an academic, so while he helped to set up the first mainframe computers in India’s leading engineering institutions, he also assisted in opening them up for research and industrial use. At the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) at Kanpur and Madras (now Chennai) and at the Computer Society of India (CSI), he kick- started the computer revolution and ensured it permeated every facet of societal change in India. Fresh from Canada, where he had obtained his doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Mahabala together with V Rajaraman and HK Kesavan, played a pioneering role in shaping IIT Kanpur into a crucible of Computer Science. When Mahabala finished his doctorate in electrical engineering in 1964 at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, he took a few days off to visit the IBM plant in Don Mills, Ontario. ‘I saw an IBM 1620 being tested prior to shipping. It carried a placard “CAWNPORE”. I was told that it was being sent to IIT Kanpur, and was, in fact, the first computer to be installed in an educational institution in India,’ he recounts. By one of those happy coincidences, Mahabala ended up in the same institution. He got a telegram from IIT Kanpur— ‘Come and join as an assistant professor’. He later found out this was the work of Prof HK Kesavan of the electrical engineering department, with whom he had interacted briefly on a previous short visit. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Results for the Quarter ended December 31, 2004 under Consolidated Indian GAAP Wipro records 56% growth in Profit After Tax Dollar Revenue in Global IT business grows 41% YoY; Operating Margin in Global IT business (before 1% non-cash charge for RSUs) at 27% Bangalore, January 21, 2005 –Wipro Limited today announced its audited results approved by the Board of Directors for the quarter ended December 31, 2004. Highlights for the Quarter ended December 31, 2004: • Profit Before Interest & Tax (PBIT) grew by 66% year on year to Rs. 4.76 billion (Rs. 476 Crores). Revenue for the quarter was Rs. 21.10 billion (Rs.2,110 Crores), an increase of 39% year on year. • Profit After Tax grew by 56% year on year to Rs.4.27 billion (Rs.427 Crores). • Global IT Services & Products Revenue increased 38% year on year, at Rs. 15.89 billion (Rs. 1,589 Crores). • Global IT Services & Products PBIT was Rs. 4.14 billion (Rs. 414 Crores), an increase of 65% year on year, contributed by pricing growth and productivity improvements. • Global IT Services & Products Operating Margin (excluding 1% non-cash charge for Restricted Stock Units -RSUs) was 27%, despite increase in compensation cost and Rupee appreciation • Global IT Services & Products added 26 new clients in the quarter. • India, Middle East and Asia Pacific IT Services and Products Revenues grew by 45% and PBIT grew by 69% year on year. Voltas Limited and Arçelik A.S. join forces in India Joint Venture Company to be established to tap India’s growing consumer durables market Mumbai (India), May 23, 2017 Voltas Limited -- A Tata Enterprise, and Ardutch B.V. (a subsidiary of Arçelik A.S.; part of the Koç Group – Turkey’s largest industrial and services group), have agreed to establish a Joint Venture Company (JVC) in India, to enter the consumer durables market in the country. The new company to be incorporated in India will be an equal partnership joint venture. The proposed JVC will leverage the strong brand presence and wide sales and distribution network of Voltas, which is the market leader for residential air-conditioners in India, with over 20% market share. Arçelik will bring to the JVC its strong R&D and manufacturing prowess, in addition to a wide product range and global sourcing capabilities. Beko, the global brand of Arçelik A. Ş., has been the fastest growing home appliances brand of Europe for the past 7 years. The brand is the market leader in UK and the #1 freestanding white goods brand of Europe. The complementary strengths of the two partners will help build a sustainable consumer durables business in India. The proposed JVC will launch refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves and other white goods / domestic appliances in India. A manufacturing facility will be set up in the country, and the JVC will also source products from Arçelik’s global manufacturing facilities and vendor base. The Consumer Durables market in India is slated to grow by 10%-12% per annum and reach US$ 12 billion by 2027. -

GANESHAMURTHI : Will the Minister of HEAVY INDUSTRIES AND PUBLIC ENTERPRISES be pleased to state:- (a) whether the Government is planning to revamp job reservations issue for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in State-run companies following sharp fall of employment opportunities to them consequent upon disinvestment in all the Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs); (b) if so, the details thereof; (c) whether it is true that the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) is examining the issue of job reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs in State run companies following disinvestment and if so, the details thereof; (d) the total disinvestment made in various PSEs company and category-wise during the last three years along with the reasons for disinvestment; (e) the total number of SCs, STs and OBCs presently working in various PSEs company and category-wise; and (f) the total number of SCs, STs and OBCs who lost their jobs in these companies during the said period? ANSWER THE MINISTER FOR HEAVY INDUSTRIES & PUBLIC ENTERPRISES (SHRI PRAKASH JAVADEKAR) (a to d): Job reservation is available to Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) as per the extant Government policy. The Government follows a policy of disinvestment in CPSEs through Strategic Disinvestment and Minority Stake sale. -
