Its main aims are the protection and promotion of ΤΤ the Greek musical creations, the development of solidarity between the Greek composers and the protection of their professional and artistic rights. Since 1931 the Union has not relented in pursuing these goals, even during the Second World War. Its members include the most distinguished Greek composers such as Dimitris Mitropoulos, Nikos Skalkottas, Manolis Kalomiris, Antiochos Evagelatos, Iannis Xenakis, Jani Christou, and George Sissilianos. Since 1989, the president of the G.C.U. has been Theodore Antoniou, composer, director, and professor at the Boston Univercity. During his presidency, the G.C.U. has expanded its activities considerably. Besides the organization of many concert series, the Union organizes two Pan-Hellenic composition competitions: the “Yiannis A. Papaioannou” competition and the “Dimitris Dragatakis” competition. Moreover it organizes young composers’ workshops, lectures and congresses, and promotes the publication and release of different scores and CDs featuring contemporary music. Since 2003, the G.C.U. has its own magazine “music POLYTONOn”, a bimonthly publication whose main aim is to promote and disseminate Greek and international contemporary music to the wider public. The magazine also serves as an information and communication channel between the Greek musical community. HELLENIC ENSEMBLE OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC he Hellenic Ensemble of Contemporary Music (H.E.C.M.) was created by the composer and contuctor Theodore TT Antoniou - who also has the Artistic Direction of the Ensemble - on February 1967. The Ensemble gave its first performance in March, at the Hellenic American Union Auditorium during the “Contemporary Music Days” festival of 1967. Among its first members were the most talented musicians, with a specialization in contemporary music. Since then, the H.E.C.M. has presented hundreds of contemporary works of the most representative trends in the Greek and international repertory. A strong emphasis has always been placed on new composers; thus the H.E.C.M.’s programmes have included many premieres and specially commissioned works. 3 EEMetisio2016-17_ENGLISH_Layout 1 11/7/16 7:20 PM Page 4 Photo: Angelos Pappas Theodore Antoniou and the Hellenic Ensemble of Contemporary Music EEMetisio2016-17_ENGLISH_Layout 1 11/7/16 7:20 PM Page 5 SHORT CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2016-2017 NOVEMBER 2016 DECEMBER 2016 JANUARY 2017 M T W T F S S M T W T F S S M T W T F S S 123456 1234 1 78910 11 12 13 5678 9 10 11 2345678 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 28 29 30 26 27 28 29 30 31 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 FEBRUARY 2017 MARCH 2017 APRIL 2017 MAY 2017 M T W T F S S M T W T F S S M T W T F S S M T W T F S S 1 2 345 1 2 345 12 1234567 678910 11 12 678910 11 12 3456 789 8910 11 12 13 14 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 27 28 27 28 29 30 31 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 29 30 31 n Athens’ Concert Hall n Goethe Institut n Hellenic American College n Philippos Nakas Conservatory n Zakynthos’ Music School 5 EEMetisio2016-17_ENGLISH_Layout 1 11/7/16 7:20 PM Page 6 ATHENS’ CONCERT HALL All the concerts in the Athens’ Concert Hall will Thursday 2 - 3 - 2017, 20.30 be performed by the Hellenic Ensemble of Greek Composers Union - Contemporary Music.
