The programme acknowledges the cultural, social and economic role of festivals in increasing audiences' interest in European films, by co-financing around 60 of them across Europe every year. These festivals stand out with their rich and diverse European programming, their activities in support of young professionals, their commitment to audience development and film literacy, and the importance they give to networking and meeting opportunities for professionals and the public alike. In 2017, the festivals supported by the Creative Europe - MEDIA Sub-programme proposed more than 20.000 screenings of European works to nearly 3 million cinema-lovers. Creative Europe - MEDIA Sub-programme is pleased to support the 37th edition of the Anima Festival in Brussels. • Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 in Partnership with the Japan Foundation
Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 In partnership with the Japan Foundation Chapter - September 29th - October 1st, 2017 Aberystwyth Arts Centre – October 28th, 2017 The Largest Festival of Japanese Animation in Wales Announces Dates, Locations and Films for 2017 The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival returns to Wales for another edition in 2017 with audiences able to enjoy a whole host of Welsh premieres, a Japanese marketplace, and a Q&A and special film screening hosted by an important figure from the Japanese animation industry. The festival begins in Cardiff at Chapter Arts on the evening of Friday, September 29th with a screening of Masaaki Yuasa’s film The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017), a charming romantic romp featuring a love-sick student chasing a girl through the streets of Kyoto, encountering magic and weird situations as he does so. Festival head, Eiko Ishii Meredith will be on hand to host the opening ceremony and a party to celebrate the start of the festival which will last until October 01st and include a diverse array of films from near-future tales Napping Princess (2017) to the internationally famous mega-hit Your Name (2016). The Cardiff portion of the festival ends with a screening of another Yuasa film, the much-requested Mind Game (2004), a film definitely sure to please fans of surreal and adventurous animation. This is the perfect chance for people to see it on the big-screen since it is rarely screened. A selection of these films will then be screened at the Aberystywth Arts Centre on October 28th as Kotatsu helps to widen access to Japanese animated films to audiences in different locations.

  • Emergence of Computers in Manga : from Public to Private Sphere, from Optimistic Futurism to Widespread Uncritical Adoption
Emergence of computers in manga : from public to private sphere, from optimistic futurism to widespread uncritical adoption. Camille Akmut Broad trends in the representation of computer technology in manga history are described, This analysis is based on major, works of the medium, (Umezu’s classic horror The Drifting Classroom to Umaru-chan’s last volume), both pio- neering and uncertain, covering roughly the period from 1970 to 2020. Keywords : art history, manga, capitalism, technology 1 INTRODUCTION The Manga is an underappreciated art form, yet highly useful for the scientist, where meta-memories about contemporary culture are preserved and found. Other than fulfilling the function of telling its own story, the Manga also captures broader changes affecting society : It is this other, less obvious narration that may be of greatest interest to histo- rians and sociologists. No different in this regard from the Novel, the Poem or the Painting, the Manga remains nonetheless a grossly underestimated, and grotesquely neglected medium of art history. In this article we use a selection of well-known titles, picked from various genres in order to attempt an experimental history of the emergence of computers in manga. We find diverging and evolving receptions of the phenomenon, ranging from optimistic futurism to ignorance to full embrace; and an evolution from public to private sphere appearances. Context for the importance of selected works : Of Azumanga Daioh, it can be said that it created or further established all of the tropes of the modern slice-of-life / moe genre : the idiot student (Tomo), the trip to Okinawa (compare with, for instance, Yotsuba’s repeated references to this destination), the foreigner asking for infor- mation e.g.

Professor Responsável: Prof. Me. Eduardo Tieppo.

CORK SLIGO DUBLIN GALWAY LIMERICK DUNDALK TIPPERARY WATERFORD CELEBRATING 10 YEARS WELCOME TO THE JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2018 We are 10! 2018 marks a decade of The Embassy of Japan’s collaboration with Access>Cinema. The success in that time was not possible without various supporters, particularly the Ireland Japan Association and the Japan Foundation, and we look forward to working with existing and new supporters for 2018. We are really excited about this year’s line- up, which showcases the best of contemporary Japanese cinema, with a mix of new work from established directors and first features from inspiring new talent. Recently picking up the Japan Academy 2018 prizes for Best Film and Best Director, The Third Murder sees the great Hirokazu Kore-eda taking a break from his usual family dramas to deliver a dark legal thriller. Close Knit, the latest from Naoko Ogigami – her Rent-a-Cat was a favourite in 2013 – is a heartwarming yet poignant crowd- pleaser. Partially inspired by the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, The Sower is a quiet but probing story from new voice Yosuke Takeuchi. For this 10th edition our anime selection is particularly strong. We are honoured to welcome acclaimed screenwriter Mari Okada to Dublin for the Irish premiere of her debut feature Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, just weeks after its international premiere in Glasgow. On April 10th we present, for one night only, exclusive fan preview screenings of Studio Ponoc’s highly-anticipated first production Mary and the Witch’s Flower. We also present the latest films from Masaaki Yuasa.
