ROGUE AWARD ROGUE AWARD TY BURRELL MARK MONROE The Ashland Independent Film Festival presents its Rogue Award to filmmakers of outstanding accomplishment in the world of independent film. This year the festival honors celebrated documentary screenwriter, Mark Monroe, putting the spotlight on his important, but often overlooked craft.

firm believer that “a film tells you where it wants Ato go, what it wants to be,” Mark Monroe’s job is to structure the film in the most dramatic way possible, giving it a narrative drive. “Taking on projects that need a form or a structure, or a way to turn hundreds of hours of footage into ninety minutes, that’s how it begins.” Monroe’s breakthrough work as a documentary screenwriter came on the Oscar®-winning 2009 film “In the old days, documentaries The Cove, followed by the acclaimed The Pat Tillman Story, Chasing Ice (AIFF12), and The Summit, as well were made in the editing room as the upcoming Mission Blue, a documentary about between the director and the renowned ocean activist Sylvia Earle. editor. But documentaries are a Filmmaker TalkBack Panel: little more sophisticated these “Not the Same Old Story” Friday April 4, 10:00am | Ashland Springs Hotel days — they contain more than Mark will talk in depth about his work and be joined just talking heads. If you want it by other AIFF14 writers and directors to discuss the key contribution screenwriters make to non-fiction to screen like a film, it has to be storytelling. The panel will be moderated by Warren Etheredge, who has conducted over 2,500 interviews as as entertaining as a film.” host of The High Bar, an Emmy®–nominated television series, and as founder of The Warren Report. –Mark Monroe

Director Jody Shapiro ventures into the backwoods of Maine to find Burt where he has lived off the land — and off the grid, with no running water and only a wood-burning stove in his renovated turkey coop — since the 1970s. Though Burt’s bearded face still appears on many of the brand’s labels, the real Burt sold his interest in the business nearly 40 years ago. As part of an odd and complex arrangement with his co-founder and ex-girlfriend, Roxanne Quimby, the eccentric septuagenarian continues to promote Burt’s Bees. The Case Against 8 AIFF Opening Night Film | 112 minutes | 2014 | USA | In Competition behind-the-scenes look at the historic case to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage. Filmed over five years, The Case Against 8 follows Athe unlikely pairing of lead attorneys from opposite sides of the political spectrum. Ted Olson and David Boies last faced off as opposing attorneys in Bush v. Gore. Now as a team, they challenge California’s Proposition 8, the notorious 2008 ballot measure that repealed the right of same-sex couples to marry. The film also follows the plaintiffs, two gay couples who find their families at the center of the controversy. This is the story of how they took the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to the US Supreme Court — and won. First the local lads and landed gentry appeared, then lords from London — even a Prince came to her humble doorstep, as if her flies magically lured them there. PAGE 37 DOCUMENTARIES Mistaken for Strangers 75 minutes | 2013 | USA ailed by Michael Moore as “one of the best documentaries about a band that I’ve ever seen,” Mistaken for Strangers is an unusual and moving film Habout two brothers, Matt and Tom Berninger. Matt, the lead singer of the acclaimed indie rock band The National, finally finds himself flush with suc- cess on the eve of the band’s biggest international tour to date. In contrast, his younger brother, Tom, is a loveable slacker, metalhead, and under-employed filmmaker still living with his parents in Cincinnati. When Matt brings Tom on tour as a roadie, Tom secretly decides to film the entire adventure. What starts out as a rock documentary soon becomes something more: a loving, hilarious, and maddening portrait of brothers and creativity. [mature] Director’s Statement: Tom Berninger My brother’s a rock star and I’m not. A few years ago, I was living in Cincinnati, making short films. TIMES Director: Tom Berninger Producers: Matt Berninger, Carin In New York, things were starting to happen for my brother’s band, The National: the new record (High Saturday 9:00pm Besser, Craig Charland Executive Producer: Marshall Curry Violet) hit the Billboard charts, and all their shows were Co-Producer: Dawn Barger, Brandon selling out. They were a well-oiled machine, so I turned the Music: The National camera on myself — my struggles, ambitions, thoughts, and fears. It wasn’t With: Tom Berninger, Matt Berninger, easy putting myself out there as much as I did, but it did help me shed light on The National my relationship with Matt. PAGE 38 DOCUMENTARIES My Prairie Home 76 minutes | 2013 | Canada ndie singer/songwriter Rae Spoon takes us on a playful journey across the Imajestic expanse of the Canadian Prairie, through landscapes both real and emotional. Not a conventional concert film or biography, this documentary- musical occupies a beautiful space in between. Interviews, performances, and poetic visual sequences reveal Spoon’s inspiring process of building a life as a transgender person. As the camera captures Alberta’s haunting landscapes from the windows of a Greyhound bus or through the curtains of a tiny motel room, viewers are immersed in Spoon’s experiences from an upbringing in a deeply religious — and deeply troubled — home to bracingly personal and reflective songs, performed at truck stop diners and wherever else the imagination allows. My Prairie Home is an unforgettable look at a unique Canadian artist. TIMES Director: Chelsea McMullan Director’s Statement: Chelsea McMullan Producer: Lea Marin The first time I heard Rae’s music, I remember having a Thursday 6:30pm Screenwriter: Chelsea McMullan visceral reaction to the voice. My whole body began to Friday 9:30pm Cinematographer: Maya Bankovic, Derek Howard tingle, and I felt a sense of nostalgia and longing. When Saturday 3:30pm Editor: Avril Jacobson Rae and I began collaborating, I realized it’s all in the music. Sunday 10:00am Music: Rae Spoon Rae carefully wraps secrets in a sparse melodic voice. This Monday 9:30pm With: Rae Spoon spawned the idea not only to make a documentary, but also to use Rae’s music to tell the story. The challenge was getting the money to make it in the first place. Admittedly, it’s a weird pitch: “I want to make a docu- mentary about a trans musician from Alberta told through musical numbers... and there’s going to be dinosaurs.” But Rae defies gender and I felt like the film needed to pay tribute by telling the story in a fittingly genre-defying way.
