Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Comparative assessment of the engineering properties of main and ratooned NERICA rice varieties was investigated in this study. The length, width, thickness, arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean diameter, equivalent diameter and surface area ranged from 8.21 to 10.62 mm, 2.31 to 3.60 mm, 1.67 to 2.28 mm, 13.10 to 22.67 mm, 3.26 to 3.87 mm, 6.35 to 9.98 mm, 23.15 to 42.02%, 34.20 to 51.31 mm and from 0.35 to 0.48 mm2, respectively. Bulk density, true density, porosity, thousand grain weight and volume ranged from 0.63 to 1.14 g/cm3, 0.55 to 0.67 g/cm3, 1.48 to 45.91%, 21.66 to 27.41 g and from 0.023 to 0.031 mm3, respectively. Coefficient of static friction on polished wood, plywood, metal and glass ranged from 0.35 to 0.47, 0.34 to 0.44, 0.26 to 0.34 and 0.14 to 0.21, respectively. -
St. Eustatius (Statia)
St. Eustatius (Statia) Overview: Sint Eustatius, also known as Statia, is one of the islands which make up the Netherlands Antilles. Over its long history, it changed hands more than 20 times. The island has remained in Dutch hands since 1816. Vocanic in origin, and quite rugged along the coastal areas, it was once one of the busiest and most powerful commercial ports in the Caribbean. As a result of the British blockade during America's Revolutionary War, most goods destined for the new colonies flowed into St. Eustatius. It was not uncommon to see hundreds of supply ships off Oranjestad. When that war ended and mail and supplies were sent directly to the new United States, the economy of St. Eustatius changed dramatically. According to tradition, it was the first foreign port to salute (1776) the American flag. Tourism is the major industry today, and the island is a favorite destination for scuba diving aficionados and nature lovers. Territory: Highest point = Mt. Mazinga, 1,968 ft. (602m) St. Eustatius is hilly with a central flat plain. Sandy beaches are rare. Geographically, the island is saddle- shaped, with the 602 meter-high Mount Mazinga, colloquially called the Quill (a dormant volcano) to the southeast and the smaller pair Signal Hill/Little Mountain and Boven Mountain to the northwest. The bulk of the island's population lives in the "dip" between the two areas, which crosses the center of the island. The island is just 5 miles long and 2 miles wide; area: 21 sq. km. Location: It is in the northern, Leeward Islands portion of the West Indies, some distance southeast of the Virgin Islands. -
(OECD) 2018 Progress Report on Preferential Regimes Has Found the Curaçao Tax Regimes Not to Be Harmful
Newsflash OECD report on Curaçao tax regimes The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 2018 Progress Report on Preferential Regimes has found the Curaçao tax regimes not to be harmful. The OECD released a new publication on January 29, 2019, called “Harmful Tax Practices - 2018 Progress Report on Preferential Regimes”. The results show that jurisdictions have delivered on their commitment to comply with the standard on harmful tax practices, including their guarantee that preferential regimes align taxation with substance. The 2018 Progress Report on Preferential Regimes contains new conclusions on 57 regimes based on the assessment of preferential tax regimes comprising more than 120 member jurisdictions of the Inclusive Framework. Curaçao tax regimes Curaçao has amended three preferential regimes considered to be harmful (the exempt company regime, the export facility and the economic zone), and it has introduced the innovation box regime. The Forum on Harmful Tax Practices (FHTP) has assessed the amendments and the conclusion was as follows: the Curaçao Investment Company is not harmful, the innovation box is not harmful, the economic zone is out of scope, and the export regime has been abolished. The Curaçao Investment Company The exempt company has been replaced with the Curaçao Investment Company, which has been assessed to be “not harmful”. This means amendments have been taken into account to ensure the removal of harmful features. The report also mentions that substance requirements are in place and that no grandfathering is provided. The Innovation Box Regime The Innovation Box Regime was designed in compliance with FHTP standards and has been assessed to be “not harmful”. -

It details how much sugar Americans eat and how easy it is for people to consume more than the recommended amount of sugar by eating processed foods. It contains a helpful image that highlights the large amounts of sugar in typical products. It is a primary source because it describes modern sugar consumption and it discusses studies conducted recently. Books Austin, Harry A. History and Development of the Beet Sugar Industry. Washington, D.C.: 1180 National Press Building, 1928. Digital Collections of Colorado, University of Colorado. Web. 4 April 2016. This source is a book on the beet sugar industry written by Harry A. Austin, the Secretary of the U.S Sugar Beet Association. I used this source to understand the sugar beet industry and the role of sugar in the early 20th century. While this source had some scientific inaccuracies due to a lack of understanding of organic chemistry and had little information on sugar in Asia, I used the descriptions of beet sugar in the 1920’s in my documentary. This source describes how integral sugar had become to American and European households by the 1920’s and how beet sugar was used. While I primarily used this source as a primary source to gain insight into sugar in the early 20th century, I read some secondary material from this source on sugar beets in the 1800’s. -

Sugar: the Many Names Used in Processed Foods Both glucose and fructose are common, but they affect the body very differently. Glucose can be metabolized by nearly every cell in the body. Fructose is metabolized almost entirely in the liver. Fructose has harmful effects on the body, including insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, and type 2 diabetes. It is especially important to minimize the intake of high fructose sugars. Many processed foods will have a combination of sugars. Because the ingredient are listed in order of quantities, using several different sugar names presents the illusion that sugars are less prominent in the ratio of ingredients.
