Contrary to the dominant rhetoric, austerity measures and pacts imposed on Greece, Portugal, Spain – and later Cyprus – do not seem to provide effective remedies. On the contrary, they seem to plunge entire areas and groups of people into a vicious cycle of rising unemployment, shrinking incomes and deep impoverishment. In the context of this rhetoric, an almost exclusive emphasis on the macro-economic aspects of the crisis, seems to “expel” from public debate the fact that there are effects of austerity policies that are unevenly distributed, inscribed as they are on existing inequalities: inequalities among places, between women and men, locals and migrants, big and small employers, secure and precarious workers and, most importantly, intersections of these. This paper engages with some of the less debated aspects of the crisis in Athens, with a focus on the complex and usually invisible ways in which it impacts on women. It draws upon research in a low-income neighbourhood of Athens and focuses on changes in women’s everyday lives, which have to do with job precarity and job loss, destruction of social services and the re-shaping of care, as well as practices of coping with/ resisting the crisis.

  • Athens Constituted the Cradle of Western Civilisation
    GREECE thens, having been inhabited since the Neolithic age, is considered Europe’s historical capital. During its long, Aeverlasting and fascinating history the city reached its zenith in the 5th century B.C (the “Golden Age of Pericles”), when its values and civilisation acquired a universal significance and glory. Political thought, theatre, the arts, philosophy, science, architecture, among other forms of intellectual thought, reached an epic acme, in a period of intellectual consummation unique in world history. Therefore, Athens constituted the cradle of western civilisation. A host of Greek words and ideas, such as democracy, harmony, music, mathematics, art, gastronomy, architecture, logic, Eros, eu- phoria and many others, enriched a multitude of lan- guages, and inspired civilisations. Over the years, a multitude of conque - rors occupied the city and erected splendid monuments of great signifi- cance, thus creating a rare historical palimpsest. Driven by the echo of its classical past, in 1834 the city became the capital of the modern Greek state. A “journey” in its 6,000-year history, including the chance to see renowned monu- ments and masterpieces of art of the antiquity and the Middle Ages, and the architectural heritage of the 19th and 20th cen- turies.   • Metaxourgeio Project, the Center of Athens
    Metaxourgeio Project, the Center of Athens 1.1 The Area Metaxourgeio is one of the oldest neighborhoods of the historical center of Athens. The area was named after a private Silk Workshop (Metaxourgeio = Silk Workshop) which was settled in an incomplete building - designed to be one of the first shopping center of Athens - in 1852. Although it was considered as one of the luxurious districts of Athens, mainly due to its proximity with the proposed location of the Royal Palace (close to Omonia Square and Keramikos), the area experienced a severe transformation when the Palace was decided to be built near Syntagma Square (1836). As a result many small factories and larger industries were settled in the area resulting in a massive industrialization of the district. However, over the last decades Metaxourgeio has evolved from an industrial area to a mix-use area combining the various small industries with neoclassic residencies. It should be noted that the Government Gazette issued in 1998 (FEK 616/19-06-1998) provided the residential nature of Metaxourgeio, through the forbiddance of industrial developments in the area. Moreover Metaxourgeio together with Psirri and Gazi were included in the rehabilitation programme of the historical center of Athens started in 2002. As a result many old buildings have been refurbished and converted into theatres and galleries while the surrounding area of the Silk Workshop building has been rehabilitated into a public square. It should be noted that the Silk Workshop building is planned to be converted into the Art Center of the Municipality of Athens. 1.2 Getting There The access to Metaxourgeio is excellent through any transportation mean.
