The others are Charlotte (b 2015) and Louis (b 2018). The line of succession from Her Majesty The Queen is Prince Charles, his son Prince William, and then his son Prince George. The succession now goes to the eldest child, regardless of gender, but it so happens that all the current line of succession are males. Questions: Do you remember when Kate Middleton married Prince William? How old is their first son, Prince George? [7] Do you think he will realise yet the role he has been born into? Earlier this year, William’s brother, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan decided to withdraw from royal duties. They went to Canada, but are now in California where Meghan grew up. Do you think they did the right thing or not? PAGE 1 ~ THE WAY WE WERE ~ (by Mary) ~ Jelly and ice cream for dessert Background: If you were making jelly from fruit juice and gelatine like Mrs Beeton did it was more of a faff, but just pouring boiling water onto jelly cubes and stirring it didn’t take much effort. You could also get jelly crystals which dissolved even quicker. Jelly was good with some fruit added to it, either tinned or fresh – strawberries, raspberries, peaches etc. Years ago, ice cream came in a block, tubs came later. Questions: Do you like jelly and ice cream? Do you consider it to be a dessert just for children or for everyone? Which flavours of jelly and ice cream do you think went well together? Did you ever put fruit in jellies that you made? What sort of puddings and desserts did you usually serve in summer? Where could you buy ice cream? How do you think people kept ice cream cold if they didn’t have a freezer? PAGE 2 ~ THAT’S LIFE ~ (by Jimmy) ~ Keith Miller, Australian test cricketer Background: Keith Miller, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, was one of the first real cricketing stars that were as famous for their character and press publicity as for their cricketing skills, though, in fact, Keith Miller was one of the great all-rounders. He was, as Jimmy says, a well-known sporting hero here as well as in Australia. From the same era, Denis Compton was England’s equivalent cricketing super-star. He was a very talented batsman who later became famous for advertising Brylcreem. Questions: Did you follow cricket? Which sports did you go to see? Which sports did you play, was cricket one of them? Do you remember the cricketer Keith Miller? Which other famous cricketers have you heard of? Do you remember Denis Compton? Who were your sporting heroes when you were young? PAGE 2 ~ OVER TO YOU ~ Twins, working together and appearing in adverts Background: The company in the news when it celebrated its 100th anniversary is Dentons, one of the last shoe firms to survive in Northamptonshire. The brothers, Jack and Bill, were well known locally as cricketers. Twins often share a special relationship, and can often get on well enough to work together – not always easy for siblings. The Toni perm advert appeared in magazines and eventually on TV ads. Questions: Are there any twins in your family? Were they identical or fraternal (not identical)? Would they get on well enough to work together? Could you have worked with any of your siblings? In your opinion, is it better to dress twins differently or the same when they are children? What do you think would be the advantages and disadvantages of being a twin? What are non-identical twins called? PAGE 3 ~ QUIZ : Halve It!
