Proceedings of the Shropshire Geological Society, 13, 86–91. An ‘arctic’ landscape has been unveiled in North Shropshire by geologists, making it an ideal area in which to demonstrate the role of Ice Ages in the origin of our landscape. The classification of glacial deposits on published geological maps is shown to have both helped and hindered subsequent research. Boreholes for mineral assessment, construction and groundwater studies have enlarged a picture once restricted to exposures in gravel pits and small river, road or rail cuts. Progress has been made by appreciating that glacial deposits are three dimensional systems produced in varied depositional environments. Patterns in the hidden surface of the bedrock are also revealed, as is the impact on local river systems. Executive summary Land use is one of several significant factors affecting quantity and timing of flood runoff, and is arguably more accessible to human control than other factors such as climate, soils and channel hydraulics. Major changes occurred over the latter part of the 20th century. For instance the area of rough pasture in the Cambrian Mountains declined from 78% in 1948 to 55% in 1983, the majority of this land being converted to coniferous forest. However there is little evidence of effects of extensive land use changes on the flood hydrology of catchments. Studies on the catchment scale, for instance the large networks of catchments used in the preparation of the UK Floods Studies Report and the Flood Estimation Handbook, have not turned up simple relationships between land use and flood hydrology, except in the case of urbanisation. In the UK, impacts of afforestation on water resources have been demonstrated, and quantified in terms of the additional costs of developing reservoir storage, especially in upland areas.

In particular the course concentrates on Springtails (Collembola) and Soil Mites (Acari), but the entire soil fauna is introduced and attendees have some latitude to pursue what interests them most. The course consists of a varied mixture of presentations, field collection, practical training in microscopy techniques for soil mesofauna and, above all, plenty of practice at identifying soil mesofauna under the guidance of some of the UK’s top experts in these taxonomic groups. Attendees are introduced to the ways in which they can personally contribute to the advancement of soil biodiversity science in the UK by playing an active role in the soil biodiversity surveillance network. He was born around 1468, to Lady Elizabeth Grey, the 5.3 miles / 8.5 km granddaughter of Humphrey Plantagenet, Duke of Gloucester, and second wife of Sir Roger Kynaston, Constable Keeper of Myddle Castle. Humphrey became Constable on Route 2 his father’s death, but, through his dissolute and riotous manner of life, he fell into Picklescott to Church Pulverbatch 2.6 miles / 4.2 km debt, and Myddle castle fell into ruin. His horse, reputed to have been called Beelzebub, the devil’s horse, was said to have been shod backwards to confuse Route 3 pursuers. Humphrey, following a skirmish in Oswestry, along with his half brother Church Pulverbatch to Pontesbury Thomas, and Oliver and Richard Kynaston, was accused of felony in December 1487, 3.2 miles / 5.1 km and he became a notorious outlaw. These were unsettled times, with the Wars of the Route 4 Roses still ongoing, and the Welsh Marshes a lawless no man’s land. ABSTRACT The name of William Hazledine (1763 – 1840) is almost unknown, even to industrial historians. This is surprising, since he provided the ironwork for five world ‘firsts’, and he was described at the time of his death as ‘the first [foremost] practical man in Europe’. The five structures are Ditherington Flax Mill, Shrewsbury (the first iron- framed building in the world), Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (still one of the longest and highest in Britain), lock gates on the Caledonian Canal, a new genre of cast-iron arch bridges, and Menai Suspension Bridge. This thesis aims to rediscover Hazledine’s life and work, and place it in the context of social and industrial history. It particularly concentrates on the development of cast iron technology in Shropshire, which has been less studied than the work of earlier ironmasters, such as the Darbys and John Wilkinson.
