By Tamar Kadari* Abstract This article is a biography of the prominent scholar of Aggadic literature, Rabbi Dr Julius Theodor (1849–1923). It describes Theodor’s childhood and family and his formative years spent studying at the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary. It explores the thirty one years he served as a rabbi in the town of Bojanowo, and his final years in Berlin. The article highlights The- odor’s research and includes a list of his publications. Specifically, it focuses on his monumental, pioneering work preparing a critical edition of Bereshit Rabbah (completed by Chanoch Albeck), a project which has left a deep imprint on Aggadic research to this day. Der folgende Artikel beinhaltet eine Biographie des bedeutenden Erforschers der aggadischen Literatur Rabbiner Dr. Julius Theodor (1849–1923). Er beschreibt Theodors Kindheit und Familie und die ihn prägenden Jahre des Studiums am Breslauer Rabbinerseminar. Er schil- dert die einunddreissig Jahre, die er als Rabbiner in der Stadt Bojanowo wirkte, und seine letzten Jahre in Berlin. Besonders eingegangen wird auf Theodors Forschungsleistung, die nicht zuletzt an der angefügten Liste seiner Veröffentlichungen ablesbar ist. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei seine präzedenzlose monumentale kritische Edition des Midrasch Bereshit Rabbah (die Chanoch Albeck weitergeführt und abgeschlossen hat), ein Werk, das in der Erforschung aggadischer Literatur bis heute nachwirkende Spuren hinterlassen hat. Julius Theodor (1849–1923) is one of the leading experts of the Aggadic literature. His major work, a scholarly edition of the Midrash Bereshit Rabbah (BerR), completed by Chanoch Albeck (1890–1972), is a milestone and foundation of Jewish studies research. His important articles deal with key topics still relevant to Midrashic research even today. -

The Historical Significance of the Cambridge Genizah Inventory Project Rebecca J. W. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida [email protected] Abstract The Cambridge Inventory Project, sponsored by the Friedberg Genizah Project and carried out by a number of researchers at the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit, was the first attempt to provide accurate information regarding the size and classification of the more than 193,000 Genizah manuscript fragments held at Cambridge University Library. Prior to this project, no authoritative list of valid shelf marks was available, nor was it known how many fragments were classified under any one shelf mark. The provision of such data and the creation of a searchable database were essential for the planning and implementation of a future digitization project. This article not only describes the ensuing Inventory Project, it also uses the project‘s findings, together with additional information in previously unseen archives, to provide a new history of how these collections were formed over time. This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. -

Indeed, the quest of which Schweitzer wrote has continued unabated, and is in many respects more diffuse and nuanced than ever before.1 Of approaches and angles to evaluating the great Galilean there is no end, and understanding his place, not only in the culture of his day, but as an image-bearer of hope and humanistic values in contemporary society is eternally challenging. What fresh perspectives can yet another short volume of scholarly reflections add to the already dense collection of tomes on Jesus the Jew? However fashionable to consider Jesus in terms of his own piously religious, Jewish culture, this subject by itself is no particular guarantor of academic merit. It has after all been the habit of a good many scholars and critics to produce commentary regarding the “Jewish Jesus,” as if such a moniker were in some way insightful. -

EMERGENT LIBERAL JUDAISM AND LILY MONTAGU’S PROTO-FEMINIST PROJECT: EXPLORING THE PRECURSIVE AND CONCEPTUAL LINKS WITH SECOND AND THIRD-WAVE JEWISH FEMINIST THEOLOGIES Luke Devine* Abstract: Lily Montagu was the founder of Liberal Judaism in England. Because of Montagu’s groundbreaking proto-feminist efforts women in Liberal Judaism can become rabbis, be called up to read the Torah, they are equal in divorce law, they can study the sacred texts, they can form a minyan, and can assume communal and religious positions of authority over men. Montagu was an author, theologian, and social worker; she was the driving force behind the development of Liberal Judaism. However, this biographical overview does not match up with the extant historiography that has instead preferred to focus on the male leaders of the Liberal movement to the extent that Montagu’s intellectual and theological contribution has been marginalized and even completely ignored. In this paper we will siècle Anglo-Jewry that would otherwise be forgotten; even more, we will see in Montagu’s essays, monographs, and novels some of the English foundations of contemporary Jewish feminist theology. In the process, the biography and memory of Lily Montagu will be restored to its rightful place. Lily Montagu was the founder of Anglo-Liberal Judaism, but the extant scholarship has not been forthcoming in acknowledging the extent of her role in the expansion of the movement. In fact, Montagu’s part in the formation and development of Liberal Judaism into an established denomination, and her contribution to the intellectual, spiritual, and theological underpinnings of the movement, have been marginalized, downplayed, and even ignored, with analyses of her involvement even bordering on the derogatory. -

1 SUMMER SERMON SERIES 2016 The Movements of Judaism and their Founders IV. Solomon Schechter and Conservative Judaism July 22, 2016 Shabbat shalom! It was a dark and stormy night. Actually, that’s not quite true. It was night, and dark enough, but the sky was clear, and the weather was hot and humid. The setting was mid- July, in the city of Cincinnati, and the year was 1883. Over 200 guests had gathered for dinner to celebrate the very first ordination of American rabbis in the very first American rabbinic seminary, the Hebrew Union College, founded by the immigrant rabbi from Bavaria, Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise. Four young rabbis had just been ordained. I’ve always felt something of a connection to one of them, David Philipson, because he died in the year I was born. He’s the one on the left in the picture on tonight’s handout. Rabbi Wise had a dream – to create a unified American Judaism, with unifying institutions that would transcend the Jewish communal strife he had experienced back in Europe. Notice the word “Union” in the name of the college – and the absence of the word “Reform.” Indeed, when he had created the congregational body that would sponsor the Hebrew Union College eight years earlier, he had called it the Union of American Hebrew Congregations – again emphasizing “union” and omitting any reference to Reform. For the denominations as we know them did not yet exist. True, various congregations here and in Western Europe had been introducing reforms into their services in recent years – streamlining the liturgy; reading more prayers in the vernacular, the introduction of choral music often accompanied by an organ and the offering of modern-style sermons – but that was up to each congregation. -
