Uplovljavanje u milenijsku luku domovina je ljetos obilježila mnogim svečanostima, praćenim dalekosežnim kulturnim, društvenim i političkim odlukama. Hrvatska matica iseljenika i naša Hnajstarija fraternalistička organizacija u svijetu – Hrvatska bratska zajednica Amerike tom su prigodom u Zagrebu priredile festival Kulturne federacije mladih američkih Hrvata. Zaživio je Matičin prvi Hrvatski internetski tečaj, koji poučavanje našega materinskoga jezika dovodi u svaki iseljenički dom i to u trenutku kada hrvatski postaje dvadesetčetvrtim Unijinim službenim jezikom. Kulturni su djelatnici, kojima se pridružuju i Hrvati iz srednjoeuropskoga susjedstva, povukli više sredstava iz EU fondova nego što smo uplatiti u EU proračun, zahvaljujući potpori inovativnim projektima koje koordinira Ministarstvo kulture. Vlada Republike Hrvatske osnovala je 6. lipnja 2013. Savjet za Hrvate izvan RH te imenovala njegove članove koji će joj sukreirati migracijske politike i programe namijenjene našim građanima koji žive izvan granica Lijepe Naše. U organizaciji Državnoga ureda za Hrvate izvan RH, održana je i prva konstituirajuća sjednica Savjeta 19. prosinca 2013. Savjet čine, uz čelnike najvažnijih institucija iz domovine, ugledni predstavnici hrvatskih zajednica iz inozemstva te pojedinci afi rmirani u raznim granama ljudske djelatnosti u zemljama prijma. Time je napokon stvoren institucionalni okvir za stvaranje obostrano korisnih veza domovine i iseljeništva. Sve su te teme, s više ili manje informacija, dotaknute u ovom broju Matičina godišnjaka, čije su priloge pisali vrsni domaći i strani stručnjaci poput D. Gjenera, D. Rosandića, H. S. Tomić, A. Z. Kinda-Berlakovich, S. Vulić, V. Grubišića, T. Rudež, E. Marina, R. Marcha, V. Bailey... Od mnoštva pristiglih radova uredništvo Hrvatskoga iseljeničkog zbornika odabralo je za ovaj svezak 34 samostalna autorska priloga, a ostali će biti objavljivani u idućim godištima Matičina ljetopisa. Tematske cjeline Znaci vremena, Kroatistički obzori, Mostovi, Povjesnica, Baština, Duhovnost, Znanost te Nove knjige sadržavaju vrlo raznorodnu građu o našim mladim znanstvenim i književnim zvijezdama, jezikoslovcima, umjetnicima različitih provenijencija od elitnih modernista (na naslovnici mitska Penelopa B. Čikoša, 1903.) do suvremenih performera. Nisu izostale ni uobičajene uzbudljive priče vezane za životne izazove raseljenih hrvatskih obitelji s udaljenih meridijana i paralela. Izvrsno su opisane dosad nepoznate hrvatske fraternalističke prilike australske zlatne groznice (W. F. Lalich), prva desetljeća naše američke dijaspore (I. Čizmić), madridski krug hrvatskih egzilanata pedesetih 20. stoljeća (G. Borić) te odrazi novijih migracija na obiteljski život najiseljenijega dijela domovine, to jest Ličko-senjske županije, koje su studiozno istražile vrsne mlade etnologinje M. Rajković Iveta i M. Mišetić sa zagrebačkoga Filozofskoga fakulteta – procjenjujući, uz ostalo, kako se danas migrantske obitelji brže međusobno povezuju putem Facebooka. Poticajni prilog o humanoj geografi ji u djelima hrvatsko-američkih pisaca napisala je studentica ovjenčana ovogodišnjom Nagradom rektora Sveučilišta u Zagrebu Mirjana Galić. INTRODUCTION s of July 1st 2013 Croatia is a member of the European Union. Our arrival in this millennial port was celebrated in the homeland this summer with a number of gala events, accompanied by far-reaching cultural, social and political decisions. The ACroatian Heritage Foundation and the Croatian Fraternal Union of America – our oldest fraternal organisation in the world – organised a Junior Cultural Federation of American festival in Zagreb to mark the occasion. The CHF’s fi rst Croatian Language Internet Course was also launched, bringing instruction in our mother tongue to every emigrant home at a time when Croatian has become the twenty-fourth offi cial language of the European Union. Culture professionals, joined by Croatians in our Central European neighbourhood, drew on more EU funds than we have paid into the EU budget, thanks to the support and innovative projects coordinated by the Ministry of Culture. On June 6th Croatian Government founded a Council on Croatians Abroad and appointed its members – who will join forces in forming migration policy and programmes targeted to our citizens living abroad. The fi rst session of the Council was organised by the State Offi ce for Croatians Abroad on December 19th. The Council pools the heads of leading homeland institutions, eminent representatives of our communities abroad, and individuals established in many branches of human activity in the recipient countries. This has fi nally created an institutional framework for mutually benefi cial links between the homeland and emigrant communities. All of these topics are treated in this issue of the CHF Almanac, with articles penned by domestic and foreign experts such as D. Gjenero, D. Rosandić, H. S. Tomić, A. Z. Kinda-Berlakovich, S. Vulić, V. Grubišić, T. Rudež, E. Marin, R. March and V. Bailey. Thirty-four papers were selected by the editorial board of the Croatian Emigrant Almanac for this issue, with the remainder to be published in upcoming editions. Eight topical sections offer a great diversity of material concerning our young research and literary stars, linguists and artists of various provenances – from modernists (Bela Čikoš Sesija’s mythical 1903 Penelope on this issue’s cover) to contemporary performers. There is no dearth of exciting stories concerning the challenges facing migrant Croatian families living in distant meridians and parallels. There are brilliant descriptions of previously unknown fraternal life during the Australian gold rushes (W. F. Lalich), the fi rst decades of our American Diaspora (I. Čizmić), the Madrid circle of Croatian exiles in the 1950s (G. Borić) and the impact of more recent migrations on family life in Lika-Senj County – our most depopulated region – studiously researched by brilliant young ethnologists M. Rajković Iveta and M. Mišetić of the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences – noting that migrant families are now quickly connecting via networks such as Facebook. M. Galić, a student and recipient of this year’s University of Zagreb Rector’s Award, offers an encouraging article on human geography in the works of Croatian- American writers. Sumándose a la celebración, la Fundación para la Emigración Croata y nuestra organización fraternal más antigua Cdel mundo –la Unión Fraternal Croata de Norteamérica organizaron en Zagreb el Festival de la Federación Cultural de jóvenes croatas norteamericanos. Asimismo, se inició el primer Curso Croata por Internet, que acerca a cada hogar el estudio de nuestro idioma materno en momentos en que el croata se convierte en el vigésimo cuarto idioma ofi cial de la UE. Los funcionarios culturales, a los que se suman los croatas del vecindario centroeuropeo, retiraron más medios de los fondos europeos de lo que aportó Croacia al presupuesto de la UE, gracias al apoyo para proyectos innovadores que coordina el Ministerio de Cultura. El Gobierno de la República de Croacia fundó el 6 de junio de 2013 el Consejo para los Croatas del exterior y designó a sus miembros que ayudarán a crear una política y un programa de migraciones para nuestros ciudadanos que viven fuera de las fronteras

Within the framework of a feminist approach, the main objective is to evaduate to what extent certain stereotypes in the portrayal of female characters still determine writing and reading in the literatures of the former Yugoslavia at the end of the 20th century. The first half of this dissertation explores the development of the feminist movement and its literary thought within the boundaries of the ‘Western’ world as well as within the boundaries of the former Yugoslavia.

    Croatian Latin Writers - an International Nationalist Phenomenon in a Socialist Republic Neven Jovanović This is a sketch of the history of reception of Croatian Neo-Latin literature in Croatia (and Yugoslavia) from the end of the World War Two until the late 70's. The Neo-Latin literature – literary use of Latin language from the times of Petrarch up to the present day – is in itself already a kind of reception; during the Early Modern period, Neo-Latin authors refashioned ancient themes, forms, and literary devices to express their own thoughts or achieve their own purposes. For a number of political and cultural reasons, Croatia – similarly to other countries of East Central Europe, such as Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland – has produced a rich corpus of writings in Latin. The corpus extends diachronically from the 10th until the 20th century. Quantitatively, until the middle of the 18th century Croatian authors have published in print twice as many texts in Latin than in Croatian (the ratio is roughly 6000:3000).1 Such extent and continuity make the Neo-Latin corpus a notable research theme in Croatian literary history.2 The corpus was, indeed, granted a certain restricted place already from the beginnings of modern literary scholarship in the 1870s and 1880s until the Second World War. The influential older histories of Croatian literature devoted dutiful paragraphs, or entire chapters, to Neo-Latin authors and works.3 These authors and works were, however, treated with an apparent reserve. They lacked an essential building block of romantically perceived national identity – the national language.
