In April 2016 a major project milestone was reached, with the first section of the new bridge over the Murray River being launched. This significant event completes the first 50 metre span of the super-structure and allows the remaining steel box girder to be fabricated in the launch bed before the final launch in May.

BMD Construction’s WA Construction Manager, Mick Slocombe said, “The project is significant as it the first time in WA that a steel girder/concrete composite structure has been incrementally launched. The collaborative team approach and strong relationship with the client ensured that the first concrete deck pour and scaffolding access platforms were delivered seamlessly,” he said.

Due to the age and condition of the run down structure, the project is being fast tracked and this milestone will guarantee a safe driving environment when the bridge opens in October 2016.

The second launch, completing the 100m span was completed in May 2016 and allowed the two temporary supports to be removed and the superstructure to be lowered onto the permanent pier and abutment.
