  • 178 Chapter 6 the Closing of the Kroll: Weimar
Chapter 6 The Closing of the Kroll: Weimar Culture and the Depression The last chapter discussed the Kroll Opera's success, particularly in the 1930-31 season, in fulfilling its mission as a Volksoper. While the opera was consolidating its aesthetic identity, a dire economic situation dictated the closing of opera houses and theaters all over Germany. The perennial question of whether Berlin could afford to maintain three opera houses on a regular basis was again in the air. The Kroll fell victim to the state's desire to save money. While the closing was not a logical choice, it did have economic grounds. This chapter will explore the circumstances of the opera's demise and challenge the myth that it was a victim of the political right. The last chapter pointed out that the response of right-wing critics to the Kroll was multifaceted. Accusations of "cultural Bolshevism" often alternated with serious appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of any given production. The right took issue with the Kroll's claim to represent the nation - hence, when the opera tackled works by Wagner and Beethoven, these efforts were more harshly criticized because they were perceived as irreverent. The scorn of the right for the Kroll's efforts was far less evident when it did not attempt to tackle works crucial to the German cultural heritage. Nonetheless, political opposition did exist, and it was sometimes expressed in extremely crude forms. The 1930 "Funeral Song of the Berlin Kroll Opera", printed in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, may serve as a case in point.

  • Eduardo Chillida. Echoes
Eduardo Chillida. Echoes Eduardo Chillida. Echoes is a survey show conceived especially for the reopening of Chillida Leku. Curated by Ignacio Chillida and the museum’s research team, the exhibition features over 90 works, tracing the artist’s output from the late forties, a time when he engaged with figuration, until 2000, embracing his discovery of iron and following the development of his highly personal language. Eduardo Chillida. Echoes features works in iron, granite, alabaster, plaster and paper, and includes important series such as Gravitaciones (sculptures in paper lending particular importance to relief and void) as well as Lurras and Óxidos (works in chamotte clay). Besides works from the Estate of Eduardo Chillida, many pieces in this opening exhibition, some of which have rarely been seen before, are on loan from museums, institutions and private collections. This is the case, for instance, of major iron sculptures such as Deseoso (Wishful) (1954, Fundación La Caixa) and Del plano oscuro (1956, Fundación ICO, on deposit at Museo Reina Sofía), as well as several exceptional works like Hierros de temblor (Trembling Irons) (1957); Yunque de sueños VII (Anvil of Dreams) (1959) and Buscando la luz III (Searching for Light III) (1997). In order to better contextualize the works, the exhibition is expanded with photos, original manuscripts, letters and catalogues from the artist’s early years, carefully selected from the Eduardo Chillida Archive, which is also conserved at the museum. • Spring 2008-Final
Wagneriana Endloser Grimm! Ewiger Gram! Spring 2008 Der Traurigste bin ich von Allen! Volume 5, Number 2 —Die Walküre From the Editor ven though the much-awaited concert of the Wagner/Liszt piano transcriptions was canceled due to un- avoidable circumstances (the musicians were unable to obtain a visa), the winter and early spring months E brought several stimulating events. On January 19, Vice President Erika Reitshamer gave an audiovisual presentation on Wagner’s early opera Das Liebesverbot. This well-attended event was augmented by photocopies of extended excerpts from the libretto, with frequently amusing commentary by the presenter on Wagner’s influences and foreshadowings of his future operas. February 23 brought the excellent talk by Professor Hans Rudolf Vaget of Smith College. Professor Vaget spoke about Wagner’s English biographer Ernest Newman, whose seminal four-volume book The Life of Richard Wagner has never been surpassed in its thoroughness. In the early part of the twentieth century, the music critic Newman served as a counterbalance to his fellow countryman Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Wagner’s son-in-law and an ardent Nazi. The talk also included aspects of Thomas Mann’s fictional writings on Wagner, as well as the philoso- pher and musician Theodor Adorno and Wagner’s other son-in-law Franz Beidler. On April 19 we learned the extent of Buddhism’s influence on Wagner’s operas thanks to a lecture and book signing by Paul Schofield, author of The Redeemer Reborn: Parsifal as the Fifth Opera of Wagner’s Ring. The audience members were so interested in what Mr.

  • Pergolesi Giovanni Battista
I suoi fratelli morirono giovani.
